I'm using stuff iv accumulated, rather than buying to much ,and obviously it's in mock up stage..I had an old propshaft left from my brothers v8 corsair..and it was the same flange/uj as the jag axle..so saved me buying another propshaft ...I'm just waiting on a disc for the handbrake before I cut it to the correct length ..I also found an old fuel tap( brass) which I cleaned ..so now need some 6m ally pipe/tube to weld on the bottom of the tank..

And these, the black and blue trike I built for Martin my good buddy which I recently purchased from him but I couldn't ride it with out serious mods ( he's 6-3 I'm 5-7,oops ?) so I gave it a clean up/revamp and sold it on..the bandit chop was my sons..but his van engine blew up so he had to sell it to buy another..blooming shame..the rather ratty looking trike is my cousins..the day we got it home..it's now going through a very slow metamorphosis ..

Major leak in the workshop so didn't get much done..made a start on the mudguard mounts.
And did some end caps for the front of the chassis rails..made the speedo mount and thought I'd show you the rocker cover breather

'Ere ! I was one of those oily, brit bike chaps, called a few things in my day, never called a bottom link though, ??? missing link yes ;D ;D

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?

Well after the gran kids went..5 pm..I sprayed the rockers black..and while rummaging for some nuts for these ball joints found these electrical bits..forgot I'd bought them a while back..so can any of you electric bods tell me what I can use for my trike wiring out of this lot and what else will I need ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 01, 2015, 07:51:17 PM
Well..no help with the electrics ?..but I picked up this from another forum member today..cheers john..so spent a couple of hours wire brushing and grinding /welding/painting made a change from trikes n bikes..will do the greasing on the bearings etc tomorrow (after iv picked up the new headstock for my cousins trike..)
I'm sure the trailer will come in handy..

There is a wiring diagram on here see if I can find it ???

found it, posted for another member back mid may

bigger pic maybe of those bits but they look like relays or flasher units, both very useful for your trike.i've dip and main beam relayed, and the main ignition switch as well then you need a flasher and a hazard relay.

Cheers for that..iv seen it,but it's very fuzzy/blurred on my iPad ..and I'm hopeless with electrics..and as for drawings of what goes here and there ? Well I'm a monkey see, monkey do type..written stuff just doesn't sink in I'm afraid

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 02, 2015, 06:05:14 PM
Well a good buddy said he's doing a wiring diagram ( based on the one on here ) that he recons I CAN understand ? Today I made some new passenger foot plates..and picked up this headstock for me to use on my cousins trike

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?

And I finished painting the trailer

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 04, 2015, 07:40:49 PM
Today seemed to fly by ? And not much done ? :'(
I started to reassemble the springer..pick up the new front disc which iv had turned up (along with the propshaft disc) tomorrow ..so maybe I can get the front rolling soon.?
I screwed on a rad guard mesh thing today ? Will most likely make up something more interesting for it soon ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Manky Monkey on August 04, 2015, 08:50:34 PM
You had a brake disc made? I've always wondered if they're hardened in some way or just mild steel?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 04, 2015, 09:04:10 PM
Well there is a company in London that makes discs..but iv had some done by a guy I know..local turner..the one for the propshaft is only for the handbrake /emergency..and seeing my mate turn down discs from bikes on his lathe so we can use them on our chops I'm assuming they aren't hardened ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: hunter on August 04, 2015, 10:30:25 PM
The best material for discs is,
Cast iron,It's soft.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 04, 2015, 11:13:02 PM
Bit like my brain ?
The discs on my harley are stainless

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 05, 2015, 07:22:11 PM
Got my discs back from the turner..but had to take back the wheel disc..needed 1/4inch more taken off, plus I need a bronze bush for the caliper mount..so I tacked on a temp bracket to hold the handbrake caliper in place..and no I'm not using the original jag ones..plus iv had this one sitting in my workshop since 1997 ( £74,from pop browns ) which iv been dying to use..

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?

Looks a tidy set-up Mr S.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 06, 2015, 08:44:10 AM
Yes it's a neat fully adjustable unit and rebuildable..and cheaper to buy nowadays ? Just need to make a nice looking ( strong) bracket to mount it on which also allows me to remove, not much space

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 06, 2015, 07:50:19 PM
Got the wheel/disc/caliper bracket back in place..so more measuring for spacers/bolts/ etc..springers look good, but such a pain to work with on your own..

Cheers kind sir..and I see your on the road now..and today iv mostly been doing this for my cousins trike
NEW head stock and bearings..basically because we didn't know where the old head stock came from and which bearings it needed..

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 10, 2015, 08:18:34 PM
Got rid of my cousins trike ( for a while ?) stripped down my springer for welding/polishing and new rocker shoulder bolts, and knocked up a new front seat mount..so number 1 off my list of 16 things to do..but I'm sure the list will grow instead of shrink ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 12, 2015, 09:06:03 PM
Yesterday was one of those days..nowt went right..gave up..today was bit better..worked on mudguard /prop brake and propshaft ..in order to not have lots of silly brackets holding the handbrake caliper..I mounted it on 2 tubes welded to the chassis..which means if I need to remove/change pads I have to strip it apart ?..the propshaft went on and off several times till I eventually got the correct length ( said the actress to the vicar )
And I started glassing up the mudguards..(well one of them ) I also popped round to see a mate of mine..to see the latest bike he's just built for a customer

Spent past two days messing about with the front end..bolts/anti friction washers..trying to find out what bike the caliper came from? Decided to strip the paint off the front wheel..by hand..bit sad but I enjoy the solitude while listening to the radio...

And today..I helped a fellow monkey reassemble some of his rear end ?" Ooh you are awful "
But we needed  a big tap to clean out some of the powder coating in the threads..so that stopped play..so Whoosh back home and I mounted the hand brake. ( ouch ! )

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?

So today has been spent stripping the old paint ( never seen so much filler on these before ? ) welding and grinding and refilling the handlebars..but had to dig a lot out..grr!..didn't go off..time to buy some new p38 methinks ? I'm still not sure about these yet so will just prime em for now?. Wish I hadn't taken the flap wheel to the bloody things.. 8)..how I hate rubbing down..

Not here it's not!

That's for the people who make stuff out of old buttons and the like and call it jewellery!  There's a shop in Wareham that sells all that stuff - well I spose they sell it, I've looked at it and I guess it's very clever but I can't imagine anyone wanting it.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 23, 2015, 10:09:57 AM
Iv sold stuff to people..and you scratch your head ? But we all do it..when Maria was pushing me about at popham last week..she just said   "It's just old rubbish ?"  And I replied..." But darling, you've seen what I can build with OLD rubbish "

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 23, 2015, 07:46:39 PM
Well after all that work on the handlebars..I found these and mrs stinkey decided she wants em here.. Which meant I had to drill a hole for the wires..and I dug out a nos tail light..to use for a third brake light..so off to buy some p38 tomorrow to finish of the bars..

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on August 23, 2015, 08:37:43 PM
Is this to have MSVA ? I could be wrong, but if so, I believe that trikes with 2 rear wheels, over 1.3m wide, must have 2 stop lights with a minimum distance between illuminated surfaces of 0.6m. There is no optional provision for a third lamp.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?

It's not that big ,really compared to some iv seen..we both like hotrods and chops..so combining both like I did on martins trike..need to keep it rideable for the wife..and thanks

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 24, 2015, 07:18:27 PM
So this afternoon I thought while the tiny bit of filler was drying on the Bars..I'd knock up a new rear axle tie strap and tow bar..iv got to shape it some more..but it's another thing off my list..and didn't cost me anything which is always good..so iv got some holes to drill in the chassis ready for the wiring, make up a box to fit the electrical components into. Make up the pedals..finish off the exhaust ..blah,blah..

Must have been one of those quasi postmen, TNT or DHL. Because a real postie would be able to quash a whole motorcycle frame through a letter box.

After spending a couple of hours attempting to chop some wood..I managed to mock up the brake pedal..will need to get the correct size bushes and the correct pushrod for this landrover M/C ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Manky Monkey on September 19, 2015, 06:38:11 PM
That's a big master cylinder. Couldn't you use a smaller Girling one like a lot of us have used on Reliant trikes, & mount it the other way round, tucked between the footboard & frame, with a drop arm below the pedal to push backwards into the cylinder?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on September 19, 2015, 06:56:15 PM
I have the small Girling mounted forwards but rear mounting and adding a bellcrank allows easy pedal ratio adjustment.
Are you running dual circuit brakes ?
You may want to rethink that pedal ratio. Aim for about 6:1.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on September 19, 2015, 09:54:53 PM
Hi guys after using a smaller master cylinder on martins trike..which to be honest was crap..I thought let's try doing a split system using a land rover M/C..I must admit I was surprised at the size of it ? ( ooh er missus ! )..so one line to the front and other to the back..so trying to keep it simple..and I thought I'm bound to get a response to this..he.he..it's only mocked up and tacked..so I'm open to good suggestions and ideas ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?

no room inside the frame Andy ..I'm trying to keep everything up high as poss..springers do like to bounce sometimes..and I may yet have to fit a front shock or extra springs ? But all suggestions humbly accepted  8)

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on September 20, 2015, 06:19:34 AM
Have you thought of mounting the master cylinder beside the gearbox or prop, with a rod and crank linkage ? Should be room inside the frame there and the reservoir would be protected from being knocked.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on September 20, 2015, 07:41:34 AM
To be honest I can't be bothered to start running linkages and bell cranks etc..I just want to keep it simple ( like me ) iv got the radius arms from the rear wishbones to chassis to fit yet and the electric box will be fitted under the prop shaft,so not much room there ? It is only mocked up..so plenty of fiddling to do yet guys..and at least it helps fill out this side of the trike compared to the other side ?
I'm sure it will all change by end of the week ? And I am listening to your ideas guys..muchas grasias...6-1 ratio ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on September 20, 2015, 07:50:47 AM
And I also have to account for her ladyships smaller feet..compared to my clodhoppers ? :-[

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on September 20, 2015, 08:34:26 AM
6-1 ratio ?
Pedal ratio = leverage
Ratio of the difference in distance from the pivot point to the foot pad and the point where the master cylinder push rod attaches.
The greater this difference is, the greater the force acting on the master cylinder for a set amount of pedal pressure.
At a 6:1 ratio a 60 lb force on the pedal equals a 360 lb push on the master cylinder (6 x 60 = 360)
Think 6:1 should be thought of as a minimum. Not sure about your particular application, as I believe the master cylinder may be one normally used with servo brakes and I am unsure as to it bore.

That's actually pretty cool! I'm not a fan of chequer plate either, but it's usually done as random panels slapped on the side of trikes & trucks. Yours is maybe the only nice example I've seen -looks fitted, like a carpet almost, with the ribs looking like the weave in material. I'm impressed you made such a neat job of it, even lining up the pattern on the gearbox tunnel & the panel above.
I'm still not convinced about c/plate in general though -I always think it shows a lack of imagination & style.

Whatever else you do, i would suggest you help your cousin cut that axle out of the frame. A noisy diff might be easily fixable normally, but in his trike it could mean the end of the love affair..

General idea is that if someone goes out of their way to help, you click on applaud and their karma goes up by one. If someone is being a total #### you can smite them, reducing their karma.

Well iv been using them for years ? I do believe some landrover vehicles had them fitted from the factory?

Propshaft handbrake (cable) ..it's not going through msva
as far as I'm aware a propshaft brake isn't legal at all, msva or mot time?
Technically I believe digger is correct, though it may come down to the mot testers point of view and whether it is a 'parking brake' or 'parking/emergency brake', where there will be problems testing the efficiency and balance of the brakes at the mot.
According to the regs. The hand brake must operate on all the wheels of an axle.
If I remember correctly, dual circuit brakes or independant front and rear brakes the handbrake only needs to be a parking brake.
A single line system operating front and rear then the handbrake must be capable of acting as an emergency brake.
And yes LR used transmission brakes for years.

Well my MOT man knows his stuff..and if you pull the lever both back wheels stop ? The handbrake doesn't affect the balance of the rear brakes if he is testing them on the rollers ? ::)  if I told you what my Mot man said about some of the jobsworths out there ? :o

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?

??? Surely when each side is tested individually, with a transmission brake, the other wheel wiil rotate in the opposite direction as the brakes on the wheels aren't doing anything. Or am I missing something here ?  :-\

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on July 13, 2016, 10:30:38 PM
If he pulls the handbrake on and it stops the propshaft from turning the back wheels stop ? If he tests the back wheels/brakes they ( hopefully ?) stop too ? ..when I park the trike..I pull the handbrake up and trike doesn't move ?  8)

So today I popped down to Britbits to try and buy a new lens for my headlight ( it's an odd size ?,6 3/4in?) which meant buying new bulb holder/side light holder?  After coming out the shop £37 lighter I thought to myself "you muppet you needed that money for the brake calipers/fittings ?"...
Oh well I will need the headlight for the MOT too ?
I sold an old Girder front end on eBay..but the guy didn't want the front wheel/mudguard ..so placing said mudguard over the front wheel, HMM..it looks ok..il use that..so quick clean/autosol..mock up..started making some brackets..I'm going to leave it as is,but may bin the skull...I also made a cover for the electric box..but I'm not happy with it so MK 2 on it's way..managed to fit the radius rod brackets and painted them..fitted the front headlight and indicators..spent a few hours (Tuesday ) attempting to fit back brake lights on mudguard ..didn't like that so MK2 on those soon ?

Any body got some ideas regarding the clutch pedal arrangement on my trike? Should I go hydraulic ? Because it's rather difficult to push down for the wife's tiny foot ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Manky Monkey on August 21, 2017, 10:10:20 PM
On my last Reliant trike, (now owned by BayChimp), I used a Girling master cylinder hooked up to the pedal, feeding a Mini clutch slave cylinder mounted behind the Reliant clutch arm & connected with a clevis. Push on the pedal, fluid pushes the slave cylinder rod, which pushes the clutch arm forward.
Nice smooth action. Experiment with the pedal length till you find a ratio that's comfortable for her dainty boot. :)
I've got photos somewhere, but I'm sure Bob could take more if needed.

They're on my laptop, which I can't access at the moment, (wireless wifi issues), but I'll find them when I can.
I mounted the slave cylinder on a frame tube next to the clutch arm, pointing slightly downwards to allow for the arm's arc of travel.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on August 23, 2017, 08:19:03 AM
Heavy clutch is probably more down to pedal ratio than anything else. On my mock up the clutch was slightly heavy but worse thing was the lack of clutch control. It was like a switch, either on of off. It's much easier and safer to have to push the pedal a bit further.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?

Cheers Olds, I'm busy with this engine Running to rich at the moment,so clutch will have to wait ;D

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on August 24, 2017, 08:03:06 AM
My engine runs slightly rich on pots 2 & 3 or lean on 1 & 4 without a heated swan neck manifold adaptor to help vaporise the fuel mix. Not sure if the manifold performance modification often done (machining the webs between 1 - 2 & 3 - 4) helps with this. Not bothered trying on mine, it's just set slightly rich.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 24, 2017, 10:41:47 AM
I haven't got the original heater manifold ? Just the swan neck, it's very cold to touch even when running ? Perhaps I need to refit it ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Manky Monkey on August 24, 2017, 01:26:55 PM
Mine would ice up on long motorway runs -a thin film of ice on the outside that I could wipe off with my glove, but was fine for normal riding. I think the rising heat from the exhaust manifold was enough to countertact it.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on August 24, 2017, 06:48:25 PM
I wrapped mine. Looks like there is room for the std heated swan neck as the tank is quite high. Main reason for not using one is clearance issues.
Do you at least have a hot spot between the two manifolds ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 24, 2017, 07:18:40 PM
Well I took off the swan neck manifold..and after putting it in place it meant redoing the throttle cable plus it brought everything back in towards the tank so I couldn't lift out the dash pot dipstick ? So I gave up on that idea..I fitted another (old ) carb and it fired up first try..ran good, got it warm..slowly let in the choke..cut out again..wouldn't start ?..noticed the fuel pump was leaking from top ..replaced that with an old one..ran good..cut out ? Gave up ;D

Well seeing as next week is going to be warmer  ::) and the Dvla have informed ME that I can no longer build my trike on my MOBILITY ticket??I need to crack on with it ,
So can anyone tell me the answer to some questions please ?
1. Is this classed as a NON motorcycle trike..( reliant/jag running gear ) ?
2. Will I need TWO (2) front headlights (spaced out ridiculously wide apart ?)
3. Will a Battery cut out switch be ok as an anti-theft device ?
4. Will my Handbrake (propshaft disc ) be ok ?
5.will I go crazy ? ::)

Post by: twisted on April 14, 2018, 09:19:34 PM
1. I believe you will be a motorcycle trike. Nothing to do with engine or running gear I believe. It's to do with steeri g front end set up. You have one wheel at front and bars so motorcycle.
2. Front lights depend on width or rear of trike. Can't remember what the size is exactly. Somewhere around the 6 foot Mark I think is when you need twin headlights.
3. Not certain but a cheap alarm immobilizer from eBay will be enough.
4. No idea on this one sorry
5. You crossed that bridge long ago buddy xx ;) ;D :-*

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on April 14, 2018, 10:37:06 PM
1. Motorcycle.
2. Up to 1700mm wide, one headlamp. Greater than 1700mm two headlamps max 400mm from outside edge of vehicle and min 500mm between lamps. It can be more complicated, but this is the minimum requirements.
3 Immobiliser or C50 steering lock is easy to fit.
4. Technically no. Handbrake must act on all wheels on an axle. (Things can go very pear shaped when roller testing hand brake efficiency as one wheel will drive the other in the opposite direction) but some have got away with it.
Perfectly fine to have handbrake on just one wheel if it's the only wheel on the axle (front)
5. Crazier is more likely.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on April 14, 2018, 11:36:48 PM
Well I've been looking at the msva manual..and it says 1300mm ?
And handbrake only has to work on one wheel ? I guess I will have to double check it again ?
So I'm thinking I can put a small mechanical one on one rear disc ?
Crazy is good..one has to be to take on this hobby ? ::)

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on April 15, 2018, 05:55:04 AM
1300 is for front position lamps (sidelights)
No. Handbrake must act on the wheels on an axle. It's just that at the front (back on reverse trike) there is only one wheel on that axle.
If you have two separate service brake systems,or a dual circuit/tandem system, the handbrake only needs to be a parking brake. If you have a single line linked system then the handbrake must also be an emergency brake.

Well I've had some motivation over the weekend with the warmer weather ,thank goodness ..I picked up a spacer I'd had made from my engineer buddy..(asked him ages ago,but only just got the money to pay him :-\)
It's for the propshaft I'd made, I'd moved the engine foreward slightly..but when I fitted it..I still was about 1mm too short..and certainly wasn't going to fit some washers ::)
So I've been cutting and shutting and using the sliding spline I should have used in the first place..which means I can fit it much more easily ? So more pics of that soon
I've fitted another front end to the chop (temporary) just for moving around purposes? While I have some stuff done on the springers..and fitted some exhaust wrap to the trike

And after looking at the Diff mounting I decided to add some strength back into the design of the frame? Seeing as the passenger (mrs Stinkey) will be sitting on it ?
It's going to have these tubes welded to the plate behind the tow bar and they will slide onto some solid slugs ( welded) onto the frame, with thick pins pushed through with split pins holding them in place ?

It was the best/easiest test ride I've had TBH Merv? Nothing came loose or fell off..no overheating issues..I've had to redo the position of the rear indicators though, the missus said she couldn't see them ?

Took it out for it's first ride on Monday evening..off to see my son for instructions regarding dog sitting (3 bulldog/frenchie on steroids :o/ puppy) while he's away..not even a 1/4 mile away..put it into 4th gear..splutter splutter ..died..tried it again..managed a little bit further..nothing..fuel tap is on,fuel filter seems empty..plenty in the tank (sir ) so sat outside Bournemouth Airport on my trusty steed not going anywhere  ??? Rang my buddy ,but his truck was loaded up..rang the missus..looks like I'm going to push it home? Started it,turned it around...died again..at least my hazard lights work..and my new battery seems to be doing ok..
Suddenly a young guy in a van..slows down and asks what's wrong? Parks up and comes over..the plastic fuel filter inlet had bent over and was restricting the flow of fuel..( don't use 25 year old plastic fuel filters :-[)
So by now the wife had shown up..Benjamin ( white van man) said hop on and he will push, wife behind with her hazards flashing ..
The trike is actually very light and moves freely..plus he was young and fit..and on the downhill section he stood on the tow bar and rode it with me steering :D

At the mini roundabout in our village..my buddy pulled up behind us in his fully laden recovery truck, whilst I was walking along pushing as best I could..a guy pulled up on his Harley..offered Help..so now..it's me sat steering an older guy and a younger lad pushing, wife following and recovery truck behind..followed by dozens of Irate /angry/ bemused cars/vans all looking on/tooting horns/laughing etc? ;D they pushed it the last couple of hundred feet..and I was safely home..wifey took them back to their bike/van..they both came back to my place..we diagnosed the possible problem? Then sat in the back garden and had a beer and chatted till it got dark..I've made 2 new friends..what a brilliant day..

Fantastic....it restores your faith in humanity, if trike had run without problems you would be 2 friends less.

Nice work on the steed, I likes it a lot, more pics or youtube when able please.

Hehe. dave the first test ride attempt was at 7pm.. :D. Well folks..I've downloaded another video of this evenings test ride..YouTube again..STINKEYS trike first ride part 2..
It rides really nice and smooth..but I feel I might need a wider(flatter across the top?) tyre ? Any advice ?
And I never broke down either?

What size rim you got?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on August 08, 2018, 08:26:24 PM
Sidecar outfit tyres are available in a few sizes or if you have a 19" rim there are tyres made for the Austin 7 racing guys that are street legal. Look out for load and speed ratings though. The Avon triple duty tyre is poor in these aspects and has a speed rating of only 75 mph.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 08, 2018, 08:44:08 PM
I've got a 19 inch tyre..which I do believe is for a sidecar ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on August 09, 2018, 07:55:10 AM
Remember to check your wheel rim width is suitable for the size of tyre. There is a tyre size/rim chart I added, at the top of the  Bike Tech section. Most sidecar tyres are for reasonably wide rims.

It looks good. i like the wide wheel they set it off. If your running on a 19" front wheel have a look a the avon cobra trike tyre. any wat you done well to get it msva tested and dvla registered that quick.

Which is taller/wider and chunkier so hopefully I will see a positive difference once I get back out on it ? I was just starting to relax and get into the groove last night on my way home.. 8)

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on August 09, 2018, 08:00:22 PM
Changing mine resulted in slightly heavier steering but that was a small price to pay for the massive increase in front end grip, especially in the wet.
All you can do is try it and see how it feels.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?

Play with tyre pressures, it takes a while but eventually you find what works for you.  Also you get used to trike riding!  When a mechanic took it for a test ride after working on it he came back and asked me 'how the heck do you get round corners on this?' - I was kind of surprised till I thought abbout it.  That was before I had my lovely new extended yokes and wider bars.....

BG..I'm listening to all this advice..and I really am surprised at how easy it does handle..apparently it's raining tomorrow ? So I may have to wait for my next chance..I'm a fair weather rider nowadays  ;D

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on August 09, 2018, 09:32:49 PM
When it's raining is the perfect time to explore the handling and braking limits of your new trike.  ;D
Heavy traffic, pouring rain, going too fast onto a roundabout. When combined, these are the things that really make your heart beat a bit quicker.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?

I can spin up the inside rear wheel on tight corners and roundabouts no problem. I can't make the front slide for any money though.

Had my fill of heavy rain /snow/fog/traffic as a motorbike courier in London while doing the knowledge at the same time thanks ??? But tbh my main reason is my electrics..Martin the sparky was going to come back and fit waterproof plugs etc..but apparently he's retired and won't do anymore work? And I'd only fitted a temporary switch cover(s) ready for him for easy access ? :-[

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 16, 2018, 07:01:58 AM
Just a small update..since changing the front tyre..the gremlins have been hard at work ???
I decided to put some Antifreeze in the engine..which was premixed 50/50..replaced the bolts on the risers, filled up the tank, the thing just won't run right? :o Very rich..engine got hot very quickly..turns out the engine doesn't like a 50/50 mix..so I drained some out and replaced water..amazing difference  :)
But still running erratically..hunting..so tried adjusting all the carb settings..got it ticking over reasonably ok?
Time for a test run..put it in gear..didn't want to move?
Bit more revs..and slowly manoeuvred it out the front..around the car park area..doesn't like it..pressed the brake pedal :o nothing happened..pump,pump..phew! Brakes..obviously air is still in the system?
So I'm fitting a separate front brake m/c..and will just have the foot pedal for the rear..

And rear oil bearing in the gearbox was leaking..so I'm not a happy bunny :'(
Mr MM gave me the number of a chap who runs a classic car tuning company..they said they can sort out the carburettor problem..not cheap..but I'm thinking it's the best thing..chatting to one of the guys who helped push the trike home..he said he would have done it for me? But seeing has he lives in Durham ?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on August 16, 2018, 07:55:00 AM
Most anti freeze has a lower heat transfer rate than plain water, but even if it's never going to freeze some is needed as a corrosion inhibitor. Think I used a mix of about 20/80.
The gearbox output seal is easy enough to replace but you may find wear/corrosion on the output flange. If you are lucky (I was) this can be polished out, otherwise it's either a new flange or have the existing one sleeved.
Personally  I think a separate brake system for the front is a good idea as it gives far more control.
As My gear change is on the right (and I've had problems with my right hand) I used a Harley clutch master cylinder for the front brakes. Luckily this was the right size for my twin disc system.
Good luck with sorting it out.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 17, 2018, 07:19:17 AM
Yes I read about the Antifreeze on Fifers website..does anybody know how he's doing ?
I've got 2 spare gearboxes  ;D so hopefully i will sort it easily,I'm assuming I just unbolt the end piece and go from there ? Sleeved ?
Funny you should mention Harley..I've pinched the M/C off my Chop..which fits perfectly but may need to grind down some of the larger diameter tubing to move it further along?

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on August 17, 2018, 09:51:08 AM
Unless the output shaft bearing needs replacing, it's just a matter of unbolting the prop at the gearbox end, then taking off the output flange (big centre nut with lock tab) and carefully lever out the old seal.
There are special thin wall sleeves available that can be pressed onto the flange if it is too worn where the seal rubs.
Not heard from fifer for a while.
If you are changing to a bike master for the front brake, it's possible that you may need a smaller master for the rear.
Lack of brakes after the trike has been standing may be caused by the master cylinder being mounted low down. Residual pressure valves stop this from happening.

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: stinkey on August 17, 2018, 03:29:59 PM
The master cylinder for the rear will hopefully be the same one I've got,I was thinking I may need a residual valve.ive used them before..

Yesterday I took my trike to a small company that specialises in tuning old classics..( but they don't work on old boys ;D) as recommended by Andy ;).. Based on the A272 petersfield road not far from Winchester ..
You need to prebook because they can get busy..although he was quite yesterday ..has I turned up an Austin 1100/1300 was pulling out for a test run..it certainly sounded sweet and bought back memories..Tom the Owner likes you to get there early for the ambient temperature ..
We had a break in the weather and managed to unload the trike in between the showers..so while Tom and his son set about tuning it..we had a cuppa and my brother supplied the biscuits ( ginger nuts)
Once he finished..he explained what he'd done..etc..modified the carburettor needle..readjusted the settings, and the timing..better plugs..giving me an extra 12hp  :o certainly felt the difference when driving it out of his drive ( uphill) back to the truck..

He told me to just use BP top grade fuel or Esso..and to use the Additive he supplied..he also said this additive would negate Ethanol in any future Fuels?
So needless to say I highly recommend these guys..not cheap but worth it..Aireytuning .com
I wanted to take some pics of the guys working but it was raining.. :-[

Possibly a broken/weak detent spring. You should be able to feel when the ball bearing engages in the grooves in the selector shaft, or a bent selector not allowing the gears to fully mesh.

Took a break from doing the wiring on the chop and made some spacers for the rear sprocket, needed to come out 10mm..to clear the chain away from the tyre..I've got an old chain to use to align with, but just need a new front sprocket and a big socket to release the old belt drive sprocket

Title: Re: Stinkeys trike ?
Post by: Olds on May 12, 2019, 06:48:57 AM
The sportster drive sprocket is a bugger. Think it's 1 7/8" (could be wrong) and it's not very thick. Most sockets don't fit well due to the internal chamfer on them and need to be machined to remove this. Remember that it's a LH thread so undo clockwise.

Cheers Mr Olds,I asked Mrs Stinkey to help me with removing the front sprocket ( belt drive) ..I don't have the correct size socket ( yes 1 7/8ths ) I actually snapped the leverage bar ( thin wall tubing) while she had a crowbar jamming the pulley 😥 needless to say ive not removed it yet? So for the past 2 days ( more like weeks?) I've been tinkering with the wiring ,my least favourite thing ( mystical stuff :o)..
I must point out with some advice and wisdom of a local guy who's obviously a trained mystic in all things that spark and contain smoke?
I intended to use the original Loom in it's entirety but trying to hide that lot would have been hideously FUGLY :o
At some stage in the future I want to hide the wires through the frame, but for now it's cable tied ( and all working  :D)  tested by Phil the spark..I will be making a top cover for it and mount the battery above this ?

And today I thought I'd put the back wheel on again with new spacers so I can get the measurements for my offset sprocket ? And also started on the rear brake M/C and pedal?

I have cataracts so my eyesight is diminishing and find it difficult to actually see up close without my glasses and wearing the welding helmet makes it worse  :o :D

Yeah, I found the same when I started wearing reading glasses for close-up work. Now I struggle to see what I'm doing with a welding helmet on.

After trying about 10 different apps on my tablet ive had to admit defeat on posting pictures on here now?  My iPad has given up on me now so I'm rather annoyed?  When I last spoke with the Guvnor he mentioned he was upgrading this site? 🤞 but it's going to cost money?  I'd gladly chip in with a donation and I am sure others will?

Ha! I've just paid the bill this week. Don't worry about it.
Yes, the site will be getting updated & relaunched later this year, but not till my truck's finished. I'm going to get the doors signwritten by Simon Pollock, (Nefarious Pinstriping), who lives locally & also happens to be an ex web designer. So when the doors are done That'll become the new logo & the background colour of the site will be changed from red to green to match the truck.
Steve, I just use the photo resizer app' on my phone to reduce photos to 600 x 600. If you're having problems, email them to me & I'll reduce them for you -although some cameras seem to use a different JPEG version, which isn't always compatible with the forum.

Camera?  :D I must admit I haven't tried using my phone to even go onto the site let alone post pictures?

I use camera pic and either PC or laptop but sometimes the site will accept my (resized) photos and sometimes it won't,

One thing that I think makes a difference - with my resizer I have a choice whether to resize the original or make the resized one a copy, ie a new photo - the latter is better.

Also, once I've tried to add photos to a post and failed, it seems to remember and keep failing - so it's better to start again on a new post.

Sometimes none of the above work - which is why I rarely post pictures on here now!

It will get updated & reformatted to be more mobile phone friendly, promise. We're on a very old, outdated system here. I think it's still coal fired.

I think most of us are running outdated systems 🤣😎...I tried using my phone on MM last night, downloading an app to resize my pictures..typed out a few words, posted the picture, up came the warning sign..too large..then it deleted my post 🤬😡😱?? I was tempted to throw the phone at the wall

Maybe we've got a secret anti Stinkey setting I don't know about!

Hello all, not been on here for a while, but I'd like to add my frustration to the picture debate - nigh on impossible on my ipad.
Trike wise I'm thinking of swapping it with a yam vmax with a smokey engine. Anyone know anything about them?
