That's actually a centre stand that folds up into the section in front of the back wheel, it also contains the battery and all the electrics. Or not....

Title: Re: XS No 3
Post by: Manky Monkey on August 30, 2015, 07:35:38 PM
I kept saying it looked shorter than mine, but as Loon pointed out, the hardtail's 4 or 5 inches longer than standard. Maybe it's the taller seat rails, or fatter forks, or higher tank?

Title: Re: XS No 3
Post by: kapri on August 31, 2015, 07:37:33 AM
It's the fatter forks I think, they always seem to emphasise the front and draw the eye to the from from the rear making it appear shorter.

Think you're right Kev.

Title: Re: XS No 3
Post by: lunatic on August 31, 2015, 10:28:32 AM
Fatter forks and smaller front wheel make it almost hunch forward. It's got a real thug feeling to it, which will be perfect for Arch!

The tank perched so high makes the frame look taller. Nothing wrong with that and I like the look,  but I would have to do something with the bracing tube under the tank, making it parallel to the bottom frame tubes.

Rear end redone as I cocked up the measurements first time. Engine in with a bit of jiggery pokery persuasion and frame pretty much fully welded.

Managed to only put one small scuff in the powder coating on my frame when we fitted mine, but did nearly break Big Darren's finger.

Not really been happy with how the tank sits (really high) so we took the tunnel out of it and chopped the front of the tank right out. Sits a lot better / lower now. Need to get it back on it's wheels to see it's ok before we weld one back in

Put it back on it's wheels to see how the tank sits and real happy with it. Also changed the bars for some more swept back ones which feel like I can get my hooligan on a bit better.

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh231/archie837/FEB0B667-23F0-4D0D-BA99-20BEBA337A40.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/archie837/media/FEB0B667-23F0-4D0D-BA99-20BEBA337A40.jpg.html)

Also got the last frame brace tacked in. Next jobs are finish off the torque arm, pop a tunnel in the tank and figure out some form of guard and seat.

Will get ignored a bit now though as we're off to paris next week

I like that lower more compact style on the tank, it gives the bike a better look than before when it was higher.

Thanks to Andy and Marcus for moving this up to my unit across the road.

Got a side case off of eBay that I was missing for cheap and I snotted on some foot peg mounts (must stop being tight and buy some gas) drilled some holes for the seat to go through as I wanted to sit on it to get a bit of a feel.

Side case is missing the clutch worm and yammy badge. But it was cheap and makes it look better.

Note broken multi coloured 1100 in background that should be back on the road soon

Now life has settled down a bit should hopefully get a bit more time to myself back.

Struggling a bit with motivation for anything 2 wheeled at the moment with everything that's happened. Trying to fight the urge to move everything on.

So went and tacked on the seat mounts and did a strengthener on the mudguard. Turns out I am incredibly talented at welding and none of what I've done today will need addressing in the future......

Thought it bring some mojo back for it all, but not so far.

Looks like this -

Absolutely no rush to get it done mate. Don't set yourself deadlines & tackle it when you feel like it, not cos you think you have to -wise advice I should take myself.

Not the rush to get it done as such but the certain person I used to get excited about and speak to about what's been done isn't here anymore. It's really got me uninterested in the 2 wheelers at the moment.

So I've been cobbling together a mudguard out of bits and pieces. I widened and shortened a bit Chris had, then I used an offcut of the bottom of a beetle door to make a front mount on it. It was a sort of sideways F shape which I welded to the front of the guard and wrapped round the seat tube, drilled it and bolted it in. I then cut the front seat mount free and moved it forward to stop the springs catching on it. Pretty happy with the shape size and now just need to make some stays to stabilise it.

Haven't even been up the unit due to timings of the year and going down with a chest infection.

Bought a couple bits for this though - got an oil cooler / capacity upgrade which is quite cool. Bigger than I expected and uses a little filter in it. Not sure what the other bit does but I'm sure I'll find out!

Title: Re: XS No 3

The standard filter isn't completely round if I remember right -it's more crescent shaped isn't it? So if your new filter's circular, the mystery lump of steel might be a spacer of some sort, between the engine casing & the new filter housing?
Yup, same clutch worm drive I bought. I intend to take another look at the clutch in mine on Tuesday, (my day off), as the lever's way too stiff & the clutch plates aren't separating enough. I'll be interested to see how you fare with yours.
You still O.K with my Pop seats in your flat Archie?
The chest infection isn't the pleurisy I've been suffering with for the last 5 or 6 weeks is it? (drying out of the lining of the lungs, causing a real hacking cough with sharp pains under the rib cage every time you cough). Caused by a viral infection, like a normal cold. The pharmacist told me they don't like to treat viruses with anti biotics, so I'd just have to ride it out. Just about over it now. Get well soon matey.

Title: Re: XS No 3
Post by: Archie on January 07, 2017, 10:16:57 PM
Maybe. Had the cough for a while, but went to the docs and she prescribed some antibiotics as been coughing up brown stuff and bloody goo. Other half has a terrible cough which she didn't get anything for.

Seats are fine mate, still under the sheet in the corner.

I found the instructions for the filter and you're right it's a big spacer insert which goes in the hole first. Hopefully get it bolted up next week as long as the temperature stays a bit higher as the barn will be absolutely polar temperature wise.

The filter is a disposable modern Honda item, and therefore designed for modern oils with detergents etc, as opposed to the original mesh filter (and more basic oils), a really good upgrade available from Heiden in Holland. Did the replacements back in 2010 when I had a XS.

Its worth replacing the sump gauze filter with the Heiden/Mikes XS upgrade as the originals were prone to tearing away from the main body, leaving a lovely hole for the oil to go through without being sieved first!

Cool this is from Heiden so will order a couple of those too for both the bikes.

I need to buy carbs for this one too Tony and can't decide which set to go for - any recommendation? The kit in mikes Xs looks goods value, but can't pair up a full kit on Heiden and can only see the dellorto pumpers which I think are a bit overkill maybe

Partly depends on how much cash you want to spend, but it seems a favoured route (there are loads of threads on the XS forums) is that Mikuni roundslide 32 or 34 will do a sterling job.

Heiden do a 34mm kit, but an argument for the 32mm is greater air velocity. Friend ran 32s on an 850 BMW airhead as a performance upgrade (worked brilliantly) and had a set to fit on his (bored to 750 & re-phased ) XS.

Whatever you get, they'll need setting up properly...........  ;)

There's quite a choice out there, depends to a degree on what the bike's going to be used for.

Aye those are the ones I keep looking at, but it's annoying they don't come with any of the mounting stuff like they do in the US

Cash isn't too much of an issue really and this use wise is just gonna be a stripped down full on bare bones hooligan machine. At least that's how it feels stance wise with the running gear.

I think it might have an uprated cam in it as i found a spare one in the box of bits and know tigger was into quick stuff - this was just a spare engine while hers was off with halco being sorted.

Re the "mounting stuff".

I'd suggest getting in touch with the Heiden guys and asking them if they can get hold of the kit.

There was something a lot of years ago that Mikes XS had on its website, but Heiden's website didn't show and I'm pretty sure I asked them and they sorted it (can't remember what. brain fade and all that.....)

Worth a shot me thinks  ;)

I had a pair of 34mm Dellortos on one of my earlier XSs & can confirm they made a huge difference -the thing went like a bloomin' rocket. Drank huge amounts of fuel compared to the standard Mikunis though.

So forgot to say I got a tacho drive blank too the other day. It was cheap and maybe not made the best as the locating hole isn't threaded (or the right size) but it fits in the hole.
(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh231/archie837/129B0194-21DC-458F-9550-A360ED01044E.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/archie837/media/129B0194-21DC-458F-9550-A360ED01044E.jpg.html)

I thought I'd go up the unit as I haven't been since before xmas due to being ill and lazy. Popped it in the hole and swore as I knew I should have opened the hole up a bit as the grub screw in the case doesn't fit into the blank. And getting it out is going to muller it. I might buy another couple though as they were cheap. Looks much neater now.

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh231/archie837/D01B1D0E-0B49-4572-82F9-4066DFC9E2AA.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/archie837/media/D01B1D0E-0B49-4572-82F9-4066DFC9E2AA.jpg.html)

I also set to fitting up the oil cooler

Old filter was well grim, but luckily enough looks clean inside the hole and didn't have to scrape any gaskets off

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh231/archie837/1479E26F-07CD-41DE-8CDC-C38529ABCD5F.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/archie837/media/1479E26F-07CD-41DE-8CDC-C38529ABCD5F.jpg.html)

And all fittted up in 2 minutes

So ordered up the carb kit from Heiden in Germany. Came to about £300 and they look / feel like a really. Ice set. They're all set up ready to go which is a bonus, even have the cables already fitted to them! Pulling on the cable to open and shut them they are really snappy and open right up, so should give a bit of a power gain. Not huge amounts though as they are only 32mm, but flat slides.

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh231/archie837/0E326429-EDB1-487A-BE21-8AC73402E991.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/archie837/media/0E326429-EDB1-487A-BE21-8AC73402E991.jpg.html)

I also got a couple of those sump filters and a throttle housing.

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh231/archie837/5D9A141E-156E-4330-A84C-6BCC99AF9045.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/archie837/media/5D9A141E-156E-4330-A84C-6BCC99AF9045.jpg.html)

I'm thinking of just daytime mot on this one, so may get away with having no controls on the handlebars. We'll see.

In a bit of a dilemma really. The other Xs is much more together and if I put these bits on it it could be running quickly as it was on the road.

But i really want to get this one running as well and hooligan about on it something chronic!

Maybe I'll just have to buy 2 of everything. At least I can sell the old carbs on etc and get a bit back

Got up early today to go breakfast and ride about in a galaxie500 for a bit. I fitted up the top engine mount I got in about 2 seconds flat. Nice kit as it comes with stainless bits and all the holes lined up perfectly. Only downside is I need to trim the fuel tank a bit. Where I put a new tunnel in it the lip on the bottom touches the mount so doesn't sit on the frame anymore.

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh231/archie837/0AFF544A-B9F2-44A6-818B-BEAF8DA5012B.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/archie837/media/0AFF544A-B9F2-44A6-818B-BEAF8DA5012B.jpg.html)

I also fitted the clutch worm mechanism, which looked terrifying but was real simple once I watched a video on YouTube.

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh231/archie837/C3122CA5-52FE-4DB8-9A54-A986F9EA93B2.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/archie837/media/C3122CA5-52FE-4DB8-9A54-A986F9EA93B2.jpg.html)

This is where the crossover of parts presents a problem. The clutch cable Andy gave us fits no problem engine side but not into the zxr lever. Not a huge issue, just means may need to get a custom one made.

Then I got excited and decided to mount up the carb kit. The billet mounts are lovely and the rubbers are solid so will support the carbs no problem at all. Once on 2 small issues. I can't get filters on them due to the top rails of the hardtail. Not a major issue as I can get stubby stacks for them. Routing the cables were interesting as it's a 2 - 1. It ended up through the middle of the top mount which may not be ideal. Second issue is that the throttle end is designed for the standard tube on the Xs. I've got a universal one so it doesn't fit. Again not a major issue really.

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh231/archie837/F98FE25C-F13E-4D74-8A74-9FE7458868D5.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/archie837/media/F98FE25C-F13E-4D74-8A74-9FE7458868D5.jpg.html)

So left there for a while now while I think about what's next on the list.

Brought the lift home and got this one on it. Redid the front seat unit with the working welder. Also did some to the nudguard. Rivnutted the frame for its mount. Popped the carbs on as I wanted to try the carb holder to stop them popping off. I also really like the peanut tank, so think I need to get another one for both bikes.

Spent a bit of time in the garage again. Not much on this one, but changed the throttle, got the sidestand to take - which will probably need cutting down and fully welded one of the struts up. I've had a throttle cable come in the post today, but think it might come up a bit short.
