a mate of mine had an old Regal fitted with a 1275 GT mini lump, race tuned, twin twin chokes (I think ???) went like stink and used to do brilliant donuts.
Scared the hell out of me at around 110mph on the A21 from Sevenoaks to Tonbridge and suprised the boy racer in his Escort when we out excelerated him ;D ;D ;D Happy Day's

That's what I like - something that looks mild then surprises people!

Back in the 60s my dad had a bog standard looking Ford Anglia - the New Anglia with cut-in rear window.  The engine was souped up and the suspension was uprated - when he started it up people used to look round to see where the noise was coming from, and people's faces in supposedly 'hot' cars when he overtook them effortlessly!!!    ;D ;D ;D

There's a mark 2 Consul on Ebay at the moment for 550 quid, (same as Janie & Dave's in the Motors section). Got a Pinto engine in it. Could put my 4 litre jag motor in it for a little extra performance.  :)

Only prob with that is I wouldn't be able to afford to run it daily!!

Isn't practicality boring!
I do like that pick up though.

I once knew a guy who had 2 Austin Cambridges, 1 saloon and an estate.
I noticed one day that the saloon sat a little lower than the estate, also that the tyres were slightly wider and it had 2 exhausts. So Innocent me went and asked what the difference was................

4 ltr V8 with twin turbo's, limited slip diff and racing suspension. Him and his missus used to go out in it with him wearing a flat cap and a pipe and her with a head scarf, used to scare the boy racers rotten ;D ;D ;D ;D

Oh and his mate had an old split screen VW camper with a Porsche turbo engine and running gear, they were in a club called the "Street Sleepers" I wonder if they are still around ???

I once owned a Lada estate and desperately wanted to fit a V8 but couldn't afford it (nothing changes ::)) would have made a really cool sleeper ;D ;D

Isn't practicality boring!

Thats why I drive a Land Rover as daily transport, once she is retired I will need another form of 4 wheel transport but I can't bring myself to own a "Normal" car.
Which is why I'm looking at a Black cab, WHY you ask?
well here is one from the BritChopper web site....

That's pretty cool! I like that. Is that a Chevy grille?
Yeah, I thought about offering a swap for the Consul, but, to be honest, I need to clear the decks a bit, finish what I've got, then build up some cash before looking for new obsessions projects. Besides which his ad actually said no swaps cos he's clearing garage space too.

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?
Post by: panthershaun on November 25, 2006, 02:18:52 PM
yeah its a Chevy grill and a Moggie bonnet, or at least some of it is moggie.
I know what you meen, did you think about who might want my Sunbeam frame?

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?

Hmm, Flap keeps saying he's going to put in for his bike test via the Territorial Army & that he'd like to build a bobber next. Mind you, Loony was talking of going the bobber route too in the pub last night.

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?
Post by: panthershaun on November 25, 2006, 05:50:07 PM
Bobbers are the only way to go on 2 wheels, heres a pic of the Sunbeam frame when it was still part of a Sunbeam bike ::) ::) ::) ::)

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?

I like that.
Hmm, Reliant motor hooked up to a Ural gearbox in a Sunbeam frame.
With a supercharger.  ;D

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?
Post by: panthershaun on November 25, 2006, 06:02:57 PM
reliant motor hooked up to a Sunbeam gear box no problems, its the Sunbeam rear drive thats the weak link.
but a chap in Leicester has cured that by fitting a Ural drive.

So many possibilities!  ;D

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?

I'm thinking, NSU 4, Nimbus box, supercharger!!!!!!

Like that first shot. I'd love something like that.
How come your Landy's got exactly the same dents as Flap's in exactly the same places? He's looking for a very cheap cab top by the way if you happen to have one sat in your Alladin's cave shed.

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?
Post by: panthershaun on November 25, 2006, 06:54:44 PM
I liked the Sunbeam that way as well, but they are quirkey motors and only Sunbeam parts will fit. I fancy a 4 sitting in my Sunbeam frame, have swapped an old custom Triumph frame for an NSU motor, just need the Nimbus box to complete the drive line.I will use any Jap rear drive that turms the right way.
Unless I sell the frame first ::)
Need more time/money/space/sanity

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?
Post by: Manky Monkey on November 25, 2006, 06:57:41 PM
All 4 in very short supply here too.
Ain't enginuity a wonderful thing!

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?
Post by: panthershaun on November 25, 2006, 07:02:30 PM
If I can't get £150.00 for the frame it will just sit on the shelf until such time as I have the funds to build the 4, I do not need to sell it that badly, well I do but I will not let it go cheap >:(. Just think myself lucky that I have a shed full of projects and a wife that understands(ish).
Still need that Rod pickup though!!!!!!
Will keep an ear out for a truck cab for Mr Flap.

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?

I SO wanted that Pop pickup! Sanity prevailed though -sort of. Would've been my ideal daily driver, but need to cut back a bit & get the current crop of projects finished. I'm planning on winning the lottery this week though.

Shaun.
If you still have the frame after xmas, do you still want to flog it?
I have been wanting to build a Reliant engined bike for years. I have a Dnepr gearbox and modified flywheel here already, just need a frame.

What I am planning is to sell a  Robin ( bought it to break but it is too good)
and put the money towards my projects.

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?
Post by: panthershaun on November 25, 2006, 11:04:27 PM
The Frame comes with a V5c hence the price, it has the plunger suspension in place which can be adapted to take a Dnper rear wheel.
I do not want to sell it but I am brasic so unless I win the lottery it will still be up for grabs after crimbo.
I will temporarily put your name on it ;)

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?
Post by: reliantman on November 26, 2006, 08:43:00 AM
Brill.
I just hope I can flog this piggy.
They are going for £750 and over on ebay. Just looking at the picture of your frame again. I dont think the pig engine would fit as it stands cos the alternator sits down on the right where the downtube curves around.
I think it would need a new wider bottom section, or relocate the alt.

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?

Alternator on the left surely?
Manky in pedantic mode.

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?

Looks like they have widened the frame a bit. The piggy sump is eight inches across and I would leave at least a half inch gap each side for vibration, unless it was solidly mounted.

I like that! Somewhere locally is a Ural combo with a Reliant lump in it.

I have collected loads of pics of Ural/Reliant bikes. One of them was an outfit fitted with a huge sidecar, which was on several sites. It then turned up on ebay and was sold to America. Wonder what they thought of it there?

im very curious as to how you got reli motor out to that cc? what pistons and conrods did you use?? i was building engines for about 6yrs and the biggest cc we got was approx 960 using moggy minor internals! ;)

Title: Re: Reliant pick up anyone?
Post by: spanners on December 31, 2006, 01:37:39 PM
its a long time ago but as i remember a mate of mine made the liners out of high grade cast iron and bored the ally block to take them  pistons were austin allegro with the crown skimmend down and bushed to take smaller gudgion pin cyl head was skimmend head gasket was home made out of 3 layers of shimstock sandwiched with wellseal as i said before it went well but it's biggest drawback was it used to snap the crank just behind the flywheel thruogh the main bearing journal i changed about 4 cranks before it ended up at the back of the garage can't remember what became of it

To drag things full circle, no-one's mentioned that Reliant did actually produce a pick-up in the shape of the splendid Reliant Fox, as well as a flat bed truck - the Reliant Ant and a camper conversion for the Fox.

I really wish I didn't know that...

No need to feel like that, I didn't know Reliant built anything other than Rialtos, Robins and was it Scimitars? so, you've taught somebody something they didn't know today  ;D Have your first applaud on me.

I reckon the least common was the Reliant Salamander.

Yup Speedmaster, Reliant produced quite an array of models. Never had a three-wheeler, but I've owned two of its four-wheeled cars, the rather good Scimitar and the mighty Reliant Kitten.

The least common is probably the road-going Manky trike.  :(

I was far too polite to point that out.

I rode past the Reliant factory in Tamworth once. All the fibreglass bodyshells were stacked up outside like giant Airfix kits.

There was ant for sale in one of the bikemags a year or so back, first one I'd seen for years. When I moved down here in '76 the local council had one fitted as a street sweeper. Wasn't very successful, The box on the back for catching litter was made of fibberglass as well and the grit that was sucked up kept blowing holes in it.

There is a white Robin pickup around here, never seen it parked, only on the move. I do know tho' its got a Mini lump in the back hidden under a fake canvas cover.

Like i said I haven't seen it parked up but it looks like it's a flat ally panel with some sort of coating to give the illusion of a canvas cover.
