Title: Clive's Savage
Post by: Clive on March 22, 2014, 12:49:09 PM
I picked a Savage (of unknown quality) up after selling the Gixxer. I've got more chance of keeping my licence on this!?!
Although work is manic at the moment, I've chipped away at this and today it fired into life.............and sounds great!!!  ;D ;D

A quick before and after shot:

The very nice man I bought it from gave me another (minus the engine) as 'spares', so that's going to be built into a hardtail chop whilst this gets ridden!!

Lots of little things done. Converted to chain drive for starters, cam chain tensioner modded to allow mor life from the chain, electrics moved into the air box, and all the other bits that you can see.

That's pretty Clive. How'd you do the shaft/chain conversion?

Title: Re: Clive's Savage
Post by: Clive on March 22, 2014, 02:34:54 PM
Was a belt/chain conversion buddy.

A simple (well it has to be, I did it) swap of pulleys for sprockets. GS550 ones fit with no modification, then just a 530/110 chain

Of course, it's the part I didn't take pics of!

Before conversion

And after

very nice Clive, saw it on savage forum but didn't realize it was you. now that i've looked at your user name it makes sence ofcourse.

Have plans to mod mine now that i have the shadow. i've found it hard to get the right oil over here but it does make a difference to the clutch.Nice bike to ride but gives you a numb bum after a while with the standard seat, also i get cramps in my hands after more that about 40 miles.let me know how your seat works out.

sounds like you've done the most important mod anyway as have i so you sould have no other issues,i@ve had mine for 8 years now and the only breakdowns i've had were a blown fuse and i hade the tank of one and forgot to put the fuel pump vaccum hose back on and effectivly ran out of petrol! my fault not it's

good luck with it i hope you enjoy it and glad to fine another savage owner on the forum.i don't think there are many of these about

oh and where did you get the paint for the white walls

Never owned a whole Savage,(LS650?), but my last trike had Savage forks. Can I be in your club?
I uprated the forks with progressive Harley springs by the way.

Sorry to bring this one back to the top, but I'm having some minor running issues appearing today.

Rode to work, all good, with just the occasional 'pop' under rapid deceleration.
On the way home it seemed like it lacked a little power, and every little reduction in throttle resulted in a series of backfires, and the same when changing down gears. It also was idling so low that without a bit of throttle it would eventually die. I wound the idle up a little once I got back, but haven't re-started it yet.

It's been running great recently, up until today.

Anyone any ideas as to possible causes, please.

As you probably know, it's running a straight through pipe, I'd upped the jet as per the Savage forum recommendations.

Fuel or electrics..but difficult to diagnose via a forum ?

Title: Re: Clive's Savage
Post by: Olds on August 23, 2016, 07:21:57 PM
Agreed. Lots of possible causes. Favorite one is air leak at head/exhaust.
Can also be air leak head/carb, incorrect ignition etc.

Cheers gents, I understand it's hard to diagnose via a forum, but some starting points, thanks!

Hi Clive ,are you running the standard tank and petrol tap?if you are check first that the vacuum pipe hasn't fallen off (ask me how i know lol) if it's on ok then try running on the pri setting on the tap if this cures it the the tap is shot and need replaced. the one from a yamaha raptor quad fits apparently. alternatively mine died 2 years ago and is still running on the pri setting and so far so good. hope this helps

Standard tank, but raptor tap buddy

I seem to remember being told to spray something in the area of the suspected leak - was it WD or Redex?   And listen for a change in the engine note - ah yes that would only be for head/carb presumably, as the exhaust would be gases leaking out.....

Oh and I once had a problem which took me ages to diagnose and turned out to be a loose sparkplug!

Oh and then there's loose fuse, loose earth lead, battery lead..... or dry joint in any of those

Wound the idle up a turn, and it seems to be behaving itself. No obvious air leaks, either at the exhaust, or carb side. Hopefully ride it to work tomorrow, so we'll see........

If there is a leak on the carb side or at a vacuum hose you could spray with startingfluid, the engine will rev up a bit then.
