Title: Pendine Sands speed event
Post by: panthershaun on December 19, 2012, 11:34:36 AM
Now I haven't got a date for this yet but i think they are trying for June, they are going to open up the sands again for speed event's so us UK europe based speed freaks can get some action without heading to the Salt in the good old US of A... if anyone knows of more info please let me know as I have several people interested in going along...... now I must get that Pop finished so I can spend time on the Salster  :P :P

Ooh, I'd love to go to that.
Taz & I spent an afternoon on Pendine Sands a couple of years ago, (we'd been to Wales to collect the Moggy Minor cab back panel for my Pop -which I think you told me about Shaun).
Very atmospheric place.

I have just been informed that it's the 20th 23rd of June Bikes only this one,
I think they are a bit concerned cars may cut the surface up making it difficult to run bikes,
There is a website being built as we speak,And they will be taking entries In Feb,
I am hoping to compete at this event, depending.

had a reply from PJ, got me a space booked on the sand, just need to build a bike now..  ::) no pressure then  :o
seriously my good mate Sumo is going to fabricate a rigid rear section for the Saltster, he has offered to put some time aside to help me get this idea rolling, I'm in desperate need of something positive to pull me through the long lonely hours ahead of me and he knows of my desire to ride the worlds slowest  :-[
I mean fastest Panther (single motor of course  ;D )
it is times like this that you really find out who your mates are, and boy do I have a smashing group of mates....

Ok so i have booked a caravan on the Pendine caravan park its the one closest to the beach and have a spare twin room going i only want to cover my costs so if anyone is interested please get in touch. The price for the room is £100 for the weekend and you get access to all the facilities on the site i would prefer someone to take the room and not just the one bed (unless you want to pay for the empty bed)
There will be five of us in the van if someone takes the other room so there should be plenty of room as the van sleeps up to eight. Anyway PM me if you want any details or to jump on board  :)

Now that looks really useful, thanks!

Interesting reading the reviews - the ones that complain about no facilities, etc, just make me think it's the right place to be.  When the children were small we always used to pick campsites like that!  And only a mile from the sands!

Maybe this is a silly question..... but what distance is the event running?  ::)

Title: Re: Pendine Sands speed event
Post by: hunter on February 12, 2013, 08:16:04 PM
I can't tell you the distance that is being timed.
But the the distance from post to post will be two miles.

Title: Re: Pendine Sands speed event
Post by: Tony oily bike on February 13, 2013, 06:46:05 AM
Thanks Hunter,

If the 'post to post' is the total length of the sand the club have, that could mean a 1/2 mile acceleration followed by a 1/2 braking, which could mean a standing 1/4 followed by a flying 1/4 (as was run in the left lane at RAF Odiham ran in 2011).

Be interesting to find out.

Title: Re: Pendine Sands speed event
Post by: panthershaun on February 13, 2013, 08:50:11 AM
I think its the timing posts cover a 2 mile stretch, I will find out but they are using SCTA regs so I'm guessing a mile or so run up and same for slowing down.. and timed over a mile... have asked the question and will get back to you asap...

Title: Re: Pendine Sands speed event
Post by: panthershaun on February 13, 2013, 04:39:48 PM
the reply I've just got from PJ, is one mile in, mile timed and one mile for braking  8)

The website http://www.pendinelrc.com/ has just included an entry form (resttricted to pre 1990 machines)

http://www.pendinelrc.com/rules-and-regs/

Entry is shown as £140 for the two days and includes club membership.

The website says (as of 03-03-13):
Our rules will be available shortly, we have been given the rights to use the SCTA Regulations and these will be provided to club members and to every entrant, but if you are building a bike -either NSA or SCTA Regulations are a good starting point:we will be using SCTA regs exclusively in the future, please check with us if there are any areas of doubt.

Buried in the sand?

Title: Re: Pendine Sands speed event
Post by: Tony oily bike on March 05, 2013, 07:34:38 PM
Bit of background info - John Godfrey Parry-Thomas was the unfortunate fellow who was killed in Babs in 1927 at Pendine whilst attempting the World Land Speed Record.
The car was buried in the sand not long after the crash, where it remained until 1969 when it was excavated.

J G Parry-Thomas was buried at Saint Mary's Churchyard, Byfleet, Surrey, quite local to Manky Manor.

Pendine was used for Land Speed Records due too it long flat sands, but as speeds rose, so longer distances were required, Daytona basically took over.

Loads of info on the following website

http://www.parry-thomas.co.uk/

The website also states

It can often be found in the Brooklands Museum (its 2nd home?).

I've seen it running a few times - tis rather wonderful...................  ;D

The MSA is the governing body of UK (non bike) Motorsport and thier Competitors' Yearbook, which Contains technical rules and regulations, Scrutineer names and addresses, list of ARDS, ARKS and BARS schools etc. costs £29 if you want a hardcopy
http://shop.msauk.org/productslist.asp?id=1560084&pagenum=1
It is however free as PDFs if you view online.

With respect to the ACU – The rules are available on line as PDFs.
A free CD of the rules/regs comes with the Competition licence (but you have to pay for the licence).
‘Supplementary Regs’ normally come with entry-application forms.

The SCTA (Southern California Timing Association) are the guys who run Bonneville, and charge $10 for their ‘Rules and Regs’ book.

This is how the folk who are organising Pendine describe themselves:
The Pendine Landspeed Racing Club (PendineLRC) is run buy a group of dedicated individuals, Petrol Heads, Bike Builders, Racers and Motor Sport Lovers.
Others involved with the club are involved with road racing, drag racing, sprints and other motor sports both on a technical and participant level.
If you want to help out get in touch, everything we do is voluntary so we need all the help we can get.

I’ve been involved in the organisation of motosport events, and it can take a whole team of voulteers an awful lot of time and patience, and everything that has to be done, has to be paid for.

I just think it's fantastic that they've been able to get permission to race on the sands at all. Taz & I visited the hallowed beach a couple of years ago & stood on it, imagining daring chaps in aero engined behemoths thundering by. Well done to the organisers for resurrecting it.

yup, hat's off to em I say.. it is all coming out of their own pocket's at the moment and is costing a small fortune.. I'm pleased that someone has got off their arse and organised this.. big boost for me and for such a historic event ( can only have a 1st time once  ;) ) i think ALL the cost's are reasonable.. far cheaper than trying to run at Bonneville eh  ;D

Latest from the organisers regarding Saturday:

"We are looking at making the first run starting as close to 08.00 am as we can, running all day, non stop until the tide throws us off the beach."

Looking at the tide tables

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast_and_sea/tide_tables/11/502

this shows the tide will be about 4 meters around 08:00, with the tide going out.
When the tide comes in, a 4 meter tide will be around 13:30. (Maybe they'll run a past this as the beach will be 'dry' ??), but it gives an idea of what might be expected.

High tide is about 17:00

For Sunday, the tides move a nominal hour later (so the 4 meter ebb tide is just before 09.00)

Don't be daft mr manky. You have the lunch hour to put the knobblies on and spray the WD40 everywhere ;D
The track is at the high tide area so it should run until at least 4.

I'll be leaving home at 6 in the morning. About 3 1/2 hours according to Google maps, so I should be there mid morning. Basically get on the M4 motorway & just keep going West till it runs out.
I've just spoken to Hunter by text -he's still in his garage & doesn't think he'll be racing, but will be there.

Well, I've decided to give it a miss.
Torrential rain & high winds here all night &, as far as I can see on the 'net, similar or worse on the Welsh coast. Of course, it's bound to clear up & be a fantastic day's racing, but on the other hand, it might be a 4 hour drive to find it's been cancelled.
So the very best of luck to anyone who's racing there today & I hope someone takes some snaps for us.
I'm going back to bed!

Well home again,And yes got to meet Tony Oily Bike and Dslam this time Dslam and i spoke for some time  while  everything that has happened in the world just ;D,While Tony Oily Bike created a groove up the course with his non stop action,I think he enjoyed himself.

Great event!!! wooohoooh!!!  ;D   ;D

I left the house around 06.15 on Friday to collect Dslam and our mate Juan, and got home around 21.30 on Sunday - what a great weekend!!

Good to have met both Shaun & Hunter (Hi Guys!), good bit of chin-wag too.......  ::)

Due to the condition of the sand in a certain place, the Sunday running (with better weather than Saturday) ended up being a less than the flying mile that was hoped for.

The sand is, to quote Murray (our start line marshall and overall knowledgable person), 'organic' and can change during the course of the day, and due to a softish section getting too soft, the initial distance was reduced in length.

Big grin factor from all the riders as best I could tell, and a really nicely run event by a great set of petrol heads. Thanks must go to all those who made it happen (and there were quite a few of them), but a special big thanks must to PJ for taking a great idea and turning it into reality - well done mate!!

As a rider, being able to run on this hallowed sand was a privilege........

Here's an idea of what a run was about:
Pull away and try to get some level of traction (spinning up is pretty darn easy on the sand in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and to a degree in 4th), notch the bike up through the gears (trying not to break traction too much), compensate fro the breeze/wind, and keep it nailed increasing speed to aim for a top speed at the timing trap at end of the designated distance (I think we running around a 1km).
Then gently sit up and allow engine braking and/or rear braking to slow the bike down (whilst also trying to keep the rear from breaking traction / skidding). Slow down sufficiently to either miss the 'soft' section, or gently run through it, before doing a 180 degree left turn to head back towards the assembly area, check the speed on the way back from the team at the timing trap who kindly held out a hand written speed for each rider (nice touch that!).

Saturday speeds started at 72.98 mph for the sighting run, then 86.6 mph, 90.70 mph concluding with 92.84 mph.
This meant I really wanted to get into the triple figure bracket on Sunday. First run was around 97mph, and then ended up with a 101 mph ( ;D), and then a 102 mph -result!

The sand between the paddock/assembly area and the ocean was then treated to a few rooster-tails and power-slides as a celebration (as ya do!) heh heh!!

Will hopefully post a couple of piccies in the next few days

Thanks.

British summer............You (fortunately) haven't seen the "classified" photos of the scantily clad various Mankyites!!!!!  :D Even more fortunatly, I'm joking - phew!

The wind was so bad on Saturday night that at 2am on Sunday morning, the gazebo/baby marquee that I'd blagged a space to store my bike in, was pitched a reported 60 feet in the air, and landed the other side of the paddock/campsite against the fence!!
Fortunately it missed just about everything, only a slight dent on ones guy's van.
I only found out about this around 8am on the Sunday when I went back to my bike and found it all on its lonesome, having spent a few hours getting seriously rained on. (it started third kick!!)
Luckily the other two bikes using the gazebo were unscathed too.

Yeah, it's very easy to just turn up at events & assume they somehow run themselves. There's always an army of dayglo jacketted volunteers working their socks off though, to make sure the rest of us have a good time. Hope it was a huge success & becomes a regular event now. Is the car one still going ahead later in the year?

Car event is still on according to the to a chap and his misses we were talking to in the 'Parry' cafe at the weekend (forgotten their names tho) who are the folk who started the Hot Rod Hayride a few years ago, and I think its them that are organising the Vintage Hot Rod event on Sat 7th Sept.

Track scheduled distance is relatively short (flying 1/4) compared to the (scheduled) flying mile of the bike event (however bike event was shortened due to weather an sand conditions)

Oh so right!

I made a point of trying to thank as many of them as I could, there's soooo much work that has to go on to get events running. Many of the Pendine folk were on the sand at 06.00 both Sat & Sunday

Over and above the dayglo volunteers are all the "behind the scenes" folk and related tasks.
Dslam and to lesser extent, me, do a similar thing for the Sprint Section of the VMCC. (www.vmccsprint.co.uk)
We'd use up the lion's share of a Sunday for a logistical committee meeting 80 miles away.
Dslam gave up his ride at our most recent event in order for it to run smoothly, AND spent a big chunk of the day before the event getting the venue organised.

It was great to meet Hunter again after all those years. We sprinted yonks ago at Treffil (I doubt I spelt that right!) and was good to catch up with what has happened with who and all that stuff. Such a shame you missed the build deadline though mate. You now have plenty of time to build that double.
I had a chat with the owner of Impulse, The 3 wheeler I rebuilt last year, and he is all for a few adaptations to make it compliant for Pendine next year. Standing on the beach looking at all the riders having so much fun was kinda depressing. As the day went on I wished I had a suitable bike to ride. Now I have ::) A Hillman Imp engine in a 3 wheeler. Oh yes :D Supercharged. Oh yes yes yes ;D
Game on.

Sprinting - yep

Pre 1930's road stuff - yep (Dslam and I did the 66 mile Banbury run a week ago on his 1926 machines)

The amazing thing is that when the first bike ran up the sand (the Mike Page Special) a shaft of sunlight about, say, 60 - 100 feet in diameter, followed the bike up the sand, as though a spotlight was shining from above....... I kid you not!!!

Totally bizarre..................... :o

As best as I know there was only one Brough which belonged to Eric Patterson (EGP Enterprises as in the autojumbles etc), and I only saw it do one run (not to say he didn't do more though).

He's campaigned his bike at Bonneville.

There may be a bit of TV coverage at some stage, as the bloke (Henry Cole) who presents the ITV4 programme "The Motorbike Show" was there with a film crew on the Friday afternoon and some of Saturday.

The current season of programmes is going out on at 9pm on Wednesdays, so maybe next next season?? ???

Found this youtube clip

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdeehmS0aeA

Also found that the Brough is a 'new build' by a chap who apparently has the rights to the Brough name, which suggests it ain't a pre 1990 bike (just looks like one! oh, and sounds like one!!)
If someone were to offer me one, I reckon I'd accept it, hey, it would be rude not too.........

Think that's where I found the info......

When it pulled away, there was a stretch of sand that was 'broken' by the engine pulse, then a 'clean' bit, etc etc (the sort of "fires every lampost" scenario, cept in 1st gear, if you get the drift........  ::))

Looks like marshals are required for 2014- anyone interested?

Found this on the PLRC page.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pendine-Landspeed-Racing-Club/166621133481919?fref=ts

Pendine Landspeed Racing Club  14 August.

OK-if you raced with us in june, your race number is your membership number and carries on with you, over to next year.if you don,t compete or re-new membership for three years, your number will be up for grabs on a first come first served basis.
We are due a meeting soon to discuss membership and allocate some jobs within the club structure.
If you like what we are doing and think you could add to our happy band please get in touch-we need more people willing to get stuck in-way too many of our treasured marshals are building racebikes!
which only compounds the excitement this club feel at bringing LSR a broader appeal.

I hope so!

I'm not a 'facebook' person so could only view a small amount of info, but this seems the better place to get info, and it would suggest it's hoped to run again in 2014.
If you're a F/ B person, maybe you can have a detailed read through........??

Introduced myself (and Dslam) to PJ at last year's show and had a good 10 minute chat, as the PLRC had a couple of bikes on a display/stand.
2013's show is Dec 7th, and according to F/B they'll have a stand/display again this year so I'm hoping to have a chat this Dec.

Talking of things looking epic.............

For the 2013 bike event during the 'riders meeting' we were instructed to familiarise ourselves with the course by riding it behind the marshal's vehicle.

As my bike was up in the paddock, I and about 4 or so others, clung on the marshall's vehicle which meant we were at the front, so as we headed up the sand, we had a spectacular view of all the bikes (except ours) making their way along the famous sand behind us for the first speed event in many many years, a sight and half indeedy!!!

Thinking about it, that was a view that only a handful of us would have seen - don't think I'll forget that in a hurry!  8)   8)

Went to Kempton yesterday and managed to bump into the guys who we were chatting to at the Pendine (PLRC) motorcycle event in June from Baron's, Pete Allan & Dick Smith.

They'd recently come back from Bonneville after running the "Epsom Salt" bike (pretty apt name as Baron's is in Croydon and is only about 10 miles Epsom).
Some intersting tales indeed...........

The Epsom Salts bike-build and Bonneville expoits are currently being featured in Classic Bike Guide for those that are interested. (last issue, current issue (Aug 2013) and next issue).
The bike features a modified 650cc pre-unit Triumph.

This is a differnet bike to the one they ran at Pendine, as the PLRC entry was their own-build very pretty 500cc Triumph powered drag-bike, but with treaded tyres.

The PLRC mid-September newsletter has just been sent out, so I'm guessing (as a non-facebook person), that it may be visible there at some stage??  or maybe its a matter of becoming a member / friend of the club ? Not sure....

The club are on the lookout for marshalls and has stated:
We are always looking for marhsalls so if you have friends that wish to join in please get them to send an email to us marked marshalls or even better come and say hello at Kempton Park.

Kempton Park show is Saturday 7th Dec  http://www.egp-enterprises.co.uk/calendar.html

Bought a copy of Classic Bike Guide today (number 270 October 2013) hoping to see some more about 'Epsom Salt' at Bonneville, but alas, not in this issue,

however

the magazine, when bought at WH Smith or Sainsburys, comes with a free copy of September's 'Motorcycle Monthly' (a newspaper), and it features a two-page Pendine 2013 article, with particular mention to a Purple Panther!!  8)

Pendine is unique,Anywhere else will just be another event.

There's a speed event (timed flying kilometre) in Sweden, one slight difference to the sand of Pendine though is that this is on ice!!

I set up the engine on #253 , bear in mind it was only a 2.2 B 4 banger as well ,not the larger 3 litre Yank model A 4 . I told him not to break it but he grenaded the water pump and the CAST fan tried to escape though the hood, leaving a nice tear in the metal.

Got to go over to note all the final setting before, setting it back up for the street as I set it up a tad rich so as not to overheat it at higher revs.
