Title: trike handbrake Post by: WAYNE999 on August 07, 2011, 02:30:39 PM O.K. this may be a bit of a daft question but here goes. ???
Yesterday the old boy bought himself a Z550 trike with a volvo back axle and no mot.The handbrake only operates on one of the back wheels as there is no cable or anything else running to the other wheel. Now for the daft question would this be O.K.for the test or are we going to have to find the bits to make the other side work. Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: zakboy on August 07, 2011, 03:13:05 PM The hand brake will have to lock up on both wheels for the mot Wayne.
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: WAYNE999 on August 07, 2011, 03:28:23 PM Thought as much best start looking for parts.
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: zakboy on August 07, 2011, 03:37:20 PM If it,s got the drum brakes easiest way is to make a single cable ruining across from one brake drum to the other and have the cable running though a pulley on the threaded adjusting bar on the hand brake leaver.
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: terry t on August 07, 2011, 04:41:00 PM zak sorry your wrong there mate. the hand brake can operate on one wheel on a trike.

Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: terry t on August 07, 2011, 05:09:22 PM it would not pass at my test station your tester wants to read the manual thenTitle: Re: trike handbrake Post by: zakboy on August 07, 2011, 05:12:51 PM yeh my mistake it as to lock all wheels it is connected to unless over a certain weight then it as to lock both so my apologies Wayne you should be OK with the gt 550
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: tbone on August 07, 2011, 05:31:22 PM Terry is right, for the MOT, one wheel is fine, for an MSVA it must operate all wheels on the same axle, weight is irrelevant.
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: BikerGran on August 07, 2011, 08:14:09 PM I've been told that the reason my trike can have a handbrake that operates on one wheel only is because it's a bike trike that still uses the bike front brake for the front wheel, and the bike rear brake pedal works the rear brakes, ie alternative braking systems ie if one fails the other will still stop me - and it works! (didn't mean to test it but....)
If you use a linked braking system the handbrake must operate on both wheels. Of course mine didnt go through MSVA as it's a bolt-on. Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: WAYNE999 on August 07, 2011, 08:16:41 PM I'm beginning to like the sound of this Kevsky's going to give the tester a bell in the morning to ask the man himself.Hopefully this will save me a bit of work.He can't wait to get out on it.He's like a 10 year old on the 23rd of December. Bless him :D

one wheel only booked in for saturday morning Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: kevsky on August 15, 2011, 06:17:03 AM SHE PASSED MOT
now heres a bit of info for riders of Q plate trikes or bikes man from del mot said Qs had to be tested to 1973 standard and compared to a similar vehicle of that year but as its a one off how can you compare to anything else so no indicaters or hazards needed and very little or no restriction on exhaust noise level which is a good thing cos mine is rather loud to say the least Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: zakboy on August 15, 2011, 06:32:20 AM well done on the pass, get out there now and put some miles on it and enjoy ;D
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: Manky Monkey on August 15, 2011, 10:21:15 PM Congratulations Kev. Another one on the road ;D
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: kevsky on August 16, 2011, 06:10:47 AM put a few miles on her last night ,never ridden one before and at first was a little shy with the throttle cos steering was all over the place (for shy read sh+tting bricks ) but soon got the hang of it and was wizzing up and down the sea front and the A12 rattling what few teeth I have left
but this morning all my body aches so will have to give it another hammering after work and carry on till the old bones get used to it best fun I've had in a long time but next ones gonna be a soft tale Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: zakboy on August 16, 2011, 06:21:28 AM welcome to the world of riding trikes kev, you are no longer a trike virgin
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: Cabman77 on August 16, 2011, 08:39:14 AM take some air out of the tyres geezer, you won`t regret it ;D ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: Manky Monkey on August 16, 2011, 07:19:51 PM I've always run my trikes with just 15psi in the rear tyres. Any more & the ride gets skittery & bumpy. I much prefer hardtails.
Now you're roadworthy you can begin fine tuning it to suit your riding style & comfort needs. There'll always be something to fettle. No custom vehicle's ever truly finished! Have fun! Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: Cabman77 on August 16, 2011, 07:22:19 PM don`t be surprised if you need different pressures in the rear tyres just keep playing with pressures until you`re happy. Try starting with 15 psi all round and let a bit out here and there until you`re happy. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: kevsky on August 16, 2011, 07:38:30 PM cheers cabman but fate has taken a hold and tonight the trike will not turn a wheel cos sum r sole ran into the works van last night and have been waiting for a hire van all day finally turned up too late to spin a wheel on the trike
try again 2morow Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: Cabman77 on August 16, 2011, 07:44:22 PM it`s one of those jobs that can require a lot of patience ;D ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: klogan45 on August 16, 2011, 07:56:37 PM Good to hear that you got 'the beast' through the MOT. Shame it was too late to ride it today, there's always tomorrow and just think about this................
You have to wait so won't riding the trike be sooo much better for waiting. Enjoy yerself but be safe. Regards K Title: Re: trike handbrake Post by: Manky Monkey on August 16, 2011, 08:53:53 PM Good things come to those who wait, apparently.
