An air leak that,s being sealed under heat expansion check the rubber inlet manifold their prone to hardening and splitting ;)

possibly the black box. Does the rev counter work ok when the rear cylinder is running rough?

Try looking round on here  ........   http://viragotechforum.com  the site is a bit slow but well worth a look , loosing a pot  front/rear is quite a comman problem , but there seem to be lots of causes , from a weak battery to air leaks in the rubber boots that hold the carbs on , my rear would quit at 3500/4000 rpm , spent god knows how much trying to sort it , turned out it was the alarm I'd had fitted ... I only found out when the box with the alarm in sheared off and went walkies on the A14 , had to bypass the alarm plug  ( well me and the RAC man )  ....  went like a good'n after that  ....
