they would be vacuum diaphragm types, I think Mikuni but not sure and no idea what size. For your project Shaun  I think you`d be better off with flat slide carbswith mechanical operation.

Haynes manual for the 1970 -83 models says BS38 for XS1B, XS2, TX650, TX650A, XS650B, X650C, XS650 (UK), XS650D (US), XS650SE (UK) blah blah blah...... in fact every model the manual covers.

I'd kinda go with Cabby's train of thought - mechanical slide carbs - flat if you can find & afford, or round slide Amals (MkI or MkII), or Mikuni VM32 or VM34.

Set of roundslide mikunis on ebay (reckon they could make £270 +/-£50 ??)

Yeah, I had a pair of Dellortos on my XS650 lowrider back in the 80s. Went like a rocket but drank fuel by the bucketful.

Amals off the Rotax lump also make em go quite well, but you've to really drop main jets to iron out the lumpy accelleration

Got mark 1 Amals with 140 main jets on my latest XS650 project, (farmed out to forum member PD to build on my behalf cos I've got too many other toys to build!).
