Title: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: Manky Monkey on July 08, 2011, 10:15:07 PM Had a visit today from forum member Reg, on his new toy. It's a Ural, (Russian copy of the wartime BMW sidecar outfits).
Nearly every biker I know fancies owning one of these at some point. I've always thought they look like a lot of fun. This one is less than 10 years old so has some of the refinements the importers are fitting now, like a Japanese alternator, electronic ignition, Japanese carbs, Brembo front disc brake, modern switchgear etc. Reg has just bought a new screen for it to replace the current one. The new one has a large, round topped clear section, with a metal skirt that fits around the headlight & bars. More military looking. The bike's fitted with a towhitch. Ural sell a matching trailer with the same spoked wheels, which looks great, but apparently almost takes the combo up to it's full load carrying capacity even when the trailer's empty. Anyway. I've seen a few older versions of this fitted with Reliant engines. The gearbox on this one's tiny -about 8 inches long. I'd love to try one on a Reliant engine in an ultra short trike frame. You'd still have 4 speeds plus reverse, but also a foot gearchange & a kickstart! The importer has several spare gearboxes, but they're around 500 quid each, which is too much just to experiment with. Would it be an easy conversion? Any idea what the gearing would be like? Anyone got a spare Ural gearbox? Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: Manky Monkey on July 08, 2011, 10:15:37 PM .

Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: rob62 on July 08, 2011, 10:20:47 PM pretty sure ive seen a thread on BTW about doing a reliant/ural trike dont think its too difficult to do
Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: Manky Monkey on July 08, 2011, 10:26:14 PM Complete Cossack for spares. 50 quid on Ebay at the moment.
Ebay Cossack (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COSSACK-DNEPR-URAL-SPARES-REPAIR-/290584866385?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item43a8352e51) ...hmmm... No! No more projects! Bad Monkey! Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: terry t on July 08, 2011, 10:30:37 PM Didn't SUMO or PLASTICPIG do a reliant Ural gearbox conversion
Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: Hagar on July 09, 2011, 12:55:00 AM ..... And when the 'wurst' happens you could try this ......
.. Hagar .. ;D Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: tbone on July 09, 2011, 08:42:38 AM I thought Doug was playing about with one too?
Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: panthershaun on July 11, 2011, 06:26:13 PM Sumo's was a diesel engine to a Ural gearbox, Doug is building a Reliant bobber I think and yes I do have a Ural gearbox in the shed which is destined for the Reliant?ural conversion myself.....
Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: Manky Monkey on July 11, 2011, 09:35:02 PM ;D Why does that not suprise me Shaun! I've got more than enough projects already, but Loony & I keep saying it'd be great to build a really radical Reliant trike, with lots of trick engineering ideas, just to show what can be done with Tamworth's finest.

Post by: Manky Monkey on July 11, 2011, 10:25:04 PM Soft tail?! Pah! Suspension's for wusses! :P
Mind you, we were wonderng whether you could run open drive shafts on a Reliant axle, with the bearings built into the frame at either end. That could easily lead on to an independant rear end for our hyperthetical project. Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: Plasticpig on July 12, 2011, 08:02:07 PM Hi all.
I am still collecting bits for a piggy bike, but have had a sort of mid life crissis and sold most of my bits, including all the CX500 stuff I had in the shed. My knees have got really bad this year and I am waiting for the quak to sort out an operation, but according to him they are not bad enough yet. Wish the b*stard could feel them when its wet. I still have Pastymans ex reliant lump here, two wheels and and some odds and ends. Also have the Ural flywheel which could go for a gearbox conversion, or I am thinking about a reliant gearbox with Ural bevelbox and chain drive in between. Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: Manky Monkey on July 12, 2011, 09:14:31 PM Hi Doug.
Sorry to hear you ain't so good. Good health's so easy to take for granted isn't it. Hope things improve for you mate. Our trike's purely hyperthetical -at the moment, but it's an interesting idea. Post by: Manky Monkey on July 14, 2011, 07:05:27 PM That'd be the logical answer-which is probably why we hadn't got that far.

got one sat here for just such a project , time , I need more time , or people to buy some of the tat we churn out, either would do Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: hunter on July 14, 2011, 10:30:17 PM Won't the Ural gearbox allow you to have foot gearchange.
Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: Manky Monkey on July 14, 2011, 10:50:01 PM Yup, & a kickstart!
Title: Re: Ural gearbox on Reliant engine? Post by: hunter on July 15, 2011, 12:13:25 AM And if you get the right one, reverse.
