Title: Goodwood Revival - Sept 16 - 18
Post by: Tony oily bike on June 28, 2011, 12:16:40 PM
This is the circuit race meeting at the Goodwood Circuit near Chichester in Sussex.

All competitors vehicles are pre '66 (apart from all the new bits..), and there's some serious racing going on. Pre '66 because that's when the circuit closed, and its basically unchanged, which is unique in motor racing circuits.

Quite a few pennies, but a grand day out.

2011 photos..............
Got to Goodwood just before 8 am, wandered through the gates and it wasn't long till heard the deep rumble of engines, and they weren't car or motorcycle............ nope, were given a flying display of two Spitfires!!!!

How cool was that!!

The cost of going to Goodwoods Revival isn't cheap, Friday is £36, but we spent 11 hours at the circuit, saw loads and loads of static displays of cars and aeroplanes, viewed the millions upon millions of pounds worth of racing machinery being given a serious thrashing around the track (so much so that there were a couple of very costly crashes as these drivers are out there being pretty serious), and must have seen about 10 take offs and landings (along with their displays) of Spitfires in twos or threes, as there were about 10 on the airfield
So that works out at below £3.30 an hour.......

and as we left at 7pm, two Spits took off and gave a flying display over the car parks, now you don't often get that!

So here's few shots to give a flavour of the event.

Maserati 6CM of 1937 running the engine with rear axle on chocks. Its in gear so the wheels are spinning in order to warm up the gear and axle oil.

The engine is (I think) a straight six of 1500cc, but supercharged and running exotic fuel, it was very loud and smelt oh so good  ;D

The cars in the background are the British ERAs (English Racing Automobiles)

There's a live grass airfiled in the middle of the track, and it was from here that Douglas Bader set of on his last mission before being captured.

Here's part of the gathering of Spitfires

Just part of the displays, an original car transporter with a brace of Anglias.

The only post 1966 car/lorries etc on site are those for the emergency services and breakdowns. Even the race marshalls travel around by coaches from the 40s- 60s, and the 'safety cars' are GT40s, and ice creams etc are sold from pre '66 vans!

The food wagons at one location include three airstreams.

I'm determined to go to this next year. Wouldn't have your encyclopeadic knowledge of vintage machinery Tony, so wouldn't know what I was looking at half the time, but the atmosphere must be fantastic.
As you say, £36 for a full day's entertainment, with vehicles & people you just won't see anywhere else, ain't that bad, (the NSRA Hotrod Drags, also on this weekend, will cost you 20 quid). Wonder if they'll let my 1953 Ford Pop truck in if it's got Q plates on it? See you there next year Sir.
Gorgeous photos, as always, by the way!

Manky, wish you'd said this year. I had a ticket for each of the three days that went unused because I was at the Drags.  :-[

I didn't know. I hated them going to waste, but I didn't fancy it this year.

I think I'd rather do the Revival meet than the Festival of Speed. Goodwood's only about 40 miles away from me. Hope to nip along there for the hotrod breakfast meet next month, (actually, must check it's on this year first).

Having done both for quite a few years, I actually prefer the FoS. Maybe I was in the wrong frame of mind when I did the Revival last, but - bizarrely - it seemed more about money and how much you had, and way more cliquey than the Festival.

Well, you know I usually am, but ... I just figured I needed a break from the Revival to go do something 'real'.

Understandable. I only do 2 drag meets a year -but they're both olde time events, the Hotrod Drags & the Nostalgia Nationals.
I guess I'm just an oldie at heart.
