Title: Re: reliant engine gasket set Post by: dobber on June 16, 2011, 03:13:31 PM not clued up with the leaded thing zakboy. what do we do with that. engine aint been touched for ages, yellow top if it makes any difference.
Title: Re: reliant engine gasket set Post by: zakboy on June 16, 2011, 04:51:40 PM i think it will just be the head gasket in the set,s that will be diffrent if you look at your engine number and look at the last five numbers if its higher than 87143 then it as a unleaded head on it, if the number is lower than this you have a leaded head on the engine
Title: Re: reliant engine gasket set Post by: dobber on June 16, 2011, 05:24:00 PM hi zakboy. engine number is6j8580143e. so that means i need a leaded gasket and some sort of fuel supplement???????????????. sorta recall i needed to check up on this..
you should make this your specialist subject if you ever do master mind.... Title: Re: reliant engine gasket set Post by: zakboy on June 16, 2011, 05:26:49 PM yes dobber thats correct mate ;)
Title: Re: reliant engine gasket set Post by: dobber on June 18, 2011, 09:40:56 AM what can be done to take unleaded. head swap?
Title: Re: reliant engine gasket set Post by: zakboy on June 18, 2011, 10:00:44 AM i would imagine you could just get an unleaded head and fit it to your existing block. or you can have the leaded head converted to unleaded they do appear on ebay from time to time the last one i saw a couple of moths ago went for £33 so dont think it will be to costly to pick one up

I've never seen anything other than advertising blurb to prove that it does what it says on the tin (or bag in this case).
Would be nice for a fit and forget solution though. With regard to iron headed engines and unleaded fuel. The seats used in these heads work harden and do not suffer the seat regretion found on ally heads of a similar era. A series engines (Mini's etc are the exception to the rule). You may need to retard the ignition a tad to compensate for the differing burn rate of unleaded. If I were in your position I would run it on unleaded and make adjustments or use fuel additives as necessary. Good luck Title: Re: reliant engine gasket set Post by: BikerGran on June 19, 2011, 10:30:00 PM When I was in the Maestro club one bloke had been running his (leaded) Maestro for 40,000 miles on unleaded with no noticeable effect.
Title: Re: reliant engine gasket set Post by: spanners on June 20, 2011, 01:03:26 AM i wouldnt worry one little bit about the,,,leaded / un leaded with reliant engine,s as they all have ,hardened valve seats because they have ally ,heads the time when leaded /unleaded come,s into play is with the old cast iron heads where the valve seats are cut ,directly, into the head casting without ,, hard seat inserts, whitch all ,ally, heads have.
it seams to be a load off ,,bull,, to get you to either buy buy out of this world ,priced, lead replacement fuel,---- or the god knows how much ££ additive Title: Re: reliant engine gasket set Post by: Manky Monkey on June 20, 2011, 04:28:58 AM I used to use a fuel additive, but eventually stopped bothering. Never made any difference to performance & for the relatively low mileage I was doing, I don't believe it ever did any damage to the motors. As Mike says, the valve seats are hardened anyway.
