Title: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: Tony oily bike on May 02, 2011, 10:38:01 AM Save up you pennies (and pounds) as the Goodwood Festival of Speed is coming up, near Chichester in Sussex.
Its not a cheap event (esp on the Sat and Sunday), but what you can get to see is literally world class, and its easy to spend a whole day (10 hours) there, so if you kinda calculate what it costs per hour...................... Friday costs £37, which is about the same as a big UK drag meeting. (2011 British Car Grand prix £57) Sat is £53. (2011 British Car Grand prix £77) Sun is £53. (2011 British Car Grand prix £141) http://www.goodwood.co.uk/festival-of-speed/what-is-it/what-is-fos.aspx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH3v8AelUfk&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikY_0NLL69Y&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17i9D62LDOA&feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X-AeO3t4IA&feature=related 2008 Goodwood Cacklefest http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ac1r_ef3NC0&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2IpB66Wfm8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIySiloylkU&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQH4GURd_ZU&playnext=1&list=PL77CF9C2BF1480366 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTYCPiAL31E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW9utiCbL60 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oXV5AUH3sQ This is how close you can get to the vehicles in the paddock. V16 supercharged Auto Union http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFdgibPRyQQ&feature=related How the Festival started back in 1993 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2UO-ZguhxM If you watch this video the poor lass that says she's late for the press day, and is rescued by the hero in the rally skoda, is actually on a road known as Princes Road which leads (only) to Goodwood House 1/4 a mile behind her, which kinda suggests that her and rally-man have both just come from the press event!!!!! Doh! (believe everything the media tells you???? ;D) The building you get a glimpse of when he pulls up if Goodwood Cricket Club (google map it)...... I'll get me coat ............ Title: Re: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: Tony oily bike on June 30, 2011, 04:37:11 PM Taken today, Thurs 30th.
Thursday is set up / scrrutineering etc for the competitors, so no are on the hill (hence the static photos) but it gives a bit of chance to see some of the vehicles, as others will arrive during the evening. Thurday now has whats called the Moving Motor Show, which means the hill is used for strate-from-crate factory mobiles (some rather exotic) to be test driven by those who book up etc etc. This restricts access to the competitors wishing to unload, whereas in the days before the Motor Show thingy, vehicles would be arriving all day, with the site would only be open to exhibitors, competitors and few other souls only, with some of the drivers mooching about (had Peter Fonda ride his Easy Rider copy dressed in civvies past me only a yard away the other year). Firday has the first timed runs and demo runs going through all the classes of vehciles, and the Red Arrows usualy make an appearance. Each year, the Festival has a feature out side of Lord March's front door on the lawn (well you would wouldn't you, beats a hanging basket I guess). So can you tell what it is this year? See the rear view mirror - it was a world's first, on this actual car. Back then the cars carried a mechanic as well, so with being a single-seater, to make sure the driver could know who was behind him, the mirror was fitted. Aerodynamic input from was a gent called Frank Costin (who you might say). He went on to be the co-founder of a little ol' company called His brother Mike co-formed Cosworth. Thanks for putting me right on that Brock ;) (I had taken info from a flyer on the car which looks like it was produced by www.stp.eu - even those that are meant to know don't always get it right - tut tut) "March Engineering" took its name from the founders Max Mosley, Alan Rees, Graham Coaker and Robin Herd. Made in 1933 this three wheeler was powered by a Ford flathead V8 of the same period, driving through the front wheels.............

Think this is a American circuit racer. 1935 Indy car made by Miller. Note the modified '35 ford grille insert Title: Re: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: phunkie hiboy on July 03, 2011, 08:20:21 PM Whilst on the subject of Indy cars..................
Here we have one with a four cylinder Offenhauser with a turbo......... and the Hurst supported car with an injected normally aspirated Offy Title: Re: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: phunkie hiboy on July 03, 2011, 08:25:35 PM This was a real surpise. The last time I saw this car was in the late 80's, when it had been restored by an aquaintence of mine called David Bruzas, in Woking. I managed to persuade him I really needed to sit in to see how it fitted.
This was Juan Fangio's 1958 Indy car :o Title: Re: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: phunkie hiboy on July 03, 2011, 08:27:58 PM One more of Fangio's car.

Title: Re: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: Tony oily bike on July 04, 2011, 05:28:48 AM Single seater race car, who knows the power plant? Pre X flow Ford at a guess. Believe it or not, DAF Variomatic............. Right mr Oily Tony Bike ;D I thought I was right, just from the photo, The power plant is a Ford pre crossflow 997 screamer. The original block would have been found in an anglia and the heads were modified by blocking off the inlets in the normal place and boring down above the inlet valve (to give a straight inlet port) and using one choke of a twin choke, in this case downdraft Weber................... I stand corrected sir ;) Found a snippet saying its a "Huron-Cosworth HA4 with DAF Variomatic transmission" Didn't see the trucks/musicians on Friday (& didn't go on Sat or Sun), so good to see the pics. Yeh, its a Daf transmission alright. My guess is they used that to save time on gear shifts. A lot of inovations back in those times. Think you have to be super rich or own an ultra expensive race car to be invited, neither of which applies to me.

So guys, if you actually factually want to drive your own cars at a hillclimb, here's two ways that you can: The Prescott drivers school lets you out on the beautiful hill owned by the Bugatti folk near Cheltenham (I've competed there on a bike a few times, really good place with loads of history) http://www.prescott-hillclimb.com/driversschool.aspx Or Gurston Down, Salisbury direction, and the only hillclimb venue that starts by going down hill!! Ridden there a few time too. http://www.gurstondown.org/school.htm So what's gonna stop you.............. ;D Title: Re: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: Tony oily bike on July 13, 2011, 05:47:23 PM He was always a star! Completely forgot to set the TV reminder, so just caught the last 5 minutes. That Toyota Celica, turbocharged, supercharged and nitrous?! Crazy. I want one. Andy - I've been in touch with ITV4 and after lots of hassle, they're gonna show the programme AGAIN, so you can catch it this time. They suggested that you do the following this time: Tell a responsible adult about it so they can remind you, write it in ink on your hand, leave a zillion post-its about the place, and set the video thingy. Hope you appreciate all the hard work and favours I've had to call in to get this on again!!! SAT 16th July - 4.30 pm (liable to be 16:30 on the video timer), duration - 1 hour ;D ;D Title: Re: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: Manky Monkey on July 13, 2011, 10:07:59 PM "So what's gonna stop you"?
Discs & drums hopefully. Having spent so long putting the truck together, I don't really want to wreck it dirt oval racing at the Hotrod Hayride, (yeah I know they've stopped doing that), but might be tempted to give it a blast up a hill or two, though I'm sure that's just as rigorous. Appreciate your behind the scenes efforts with friends in high places Tone. ;) I'll write it on my forehead this time. Title: Re: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: trev on July 14, 2011, 07:47:07 AM my youngest lad steve was on the telly very very briefly getting john mcguiness,s autograph, him and his mates had a great time.
Title: Re: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: chrisj on July 14, 2011, 04:10:17 PM Nice pics and captions Tony. I had a great time as always at Goodwood on the Friday. Its good value for money as far as I'm concerned. £50 for 12 hours of car heaven including the ticket, some water, a burger and an ice cream. In that time I took 871 pics, a few of which are here.

Looks like some were taken when the sun was getting low, gives a good colour change. I managed to do Friday for £17 per head, and bought diddly squat (apart from a Programme, which I got on Thursday), which goes to prove it may be not as expensive as some may think. Been told we pay "March" prices for food n drink! Ps Car and Motorcycle heaven ;D Title: Re: Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. 1 July - 3 July Post by: Manky Monkey on July 14, 2011, 07:07:44 PM Lovely, professional pics, as always Chris.
