Title: battery boxes
Post by: hornet6 on April 20, 2011, 09:34:50 PM
Evening all. Ive started making stainless steel battery boxes if anybodies interested. Ive got one for sale on ebay now if you care to take a look.Item number 260770074908. Its a very solid construction and big enough to get a fuse box in as well.Ive made a couple in the garage tonight. The one was a bit scratched and wouldnt buff up very good,so i swirled it instead to give it a hot-rod look. Will put the pics on tomorrow.

What sort of price are we talking about here Hornet?
Can you make custom orders? (I'm thinking an electrics box & battery cradle for my XS650 chop at some point).

Right, as its created a bit of interest. I sold one on ebay a few weeks ago for £40 and now a guy in Italy has offered me £50 to make a box just slightly smaller for him.I think it would be reasonable to ask just £30 for the members on here for a basic box and lid. I think the basic size would be like the one for sale L200 x H140 x D100. If you want a slight variation to those sizes the price will still be the same, its only when i make more complicated shapes or massive boxes that the price will go up.
Mr mankey. If you want a battery cradle making,Ime assuming the type your talking about is one that leaves the battery in the open air.Just send me a p.m with maybe a rough sketch with some dimensions on and i can see what i can knock up.Maybe i could start making those for custom machines as well.

Yup, that's the plan- a tray for the battery to sit in, (it already sits inside the standard Yamaha rubber "bucket"), plus a strap that runs over the top of the battery & down the sides to attach to the base. My bike's in PD's shed so I'll get him to measure up & get back to you.

Hi. Ive been in the garage having a go at bending some battery boxes up,and doing a dummy run of a hexagon shaped battery box, which turned out pretty good. I was thinking about making a hexagon shaped oil tank.It should be fairly easy as i can get the retro style filler cap from a local company that specialises in vintage stuff for petrol and oil tanks. Does anyone know what size fittings i would need for the  infeed and outfeed as i can get most stuff from work to fit.Cheers  ??? ??? ???

most of the custom ones have a plain tube about 1/4" od fitted for inlet and outlet tbe oil pipe slide on and clamp over the top does the job.

Thats even better....i was thinking that i needed an actual screwed nipple fitting. That should be even easier to make if i can get a nice filler cap and neck.Cheers.

don`t forget the return goes into the top of the tank and don`t forget the breather (like I did!!!!) coz it makes a hell of a mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ;) ;) ;) ;)

Theres alot of people on e-bay that wont sell stuff to Italians  .....  I think its because stuff never arrives / goes missing in the post ...

Well its to late mr hagar....Hes paid and ive sent it off. Also mr cabman,if the filler cap is vented, would that be ok?

I was using the bung type of filler cap. I eventually drilled a breather hole in the bung and that cured the problem so I would say yes, a vented cap should be fine. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi Mr mankey. Was this the type of open battery tray you wanted for your xs build ??? ???

Was,nt sure which way to go with this one. Its easy to make, but i cocked up slightly with the bolts being to small.I can fix that tomorrow though. The other way of holding the battery down would be with a rubber band, with a small tab welded to the back n front of the tray. That battery size is 90mm high and 70mm deep.

No, that's nice, but I'm thinking of a 4 sided tray the battery sits in, coming up about a third of the height of the battery, & held with a buckled leather strap over the top & rivetted to the tray sides.
PD's taken on the build of my XS650 & is putting his own mark on it, but that's the style we've discussed.
