Title: 1942 Chevy Gillig School bus Post by: 57gmc on April 03, 2011, 09:05:34 AM I got the bus thats been used in the new Captain America film " New Avenger" due out in the summer.
Its a Chevy 2 ton truck chassis built with 195" wheel base and fitted with a bus body by Gillig. It came in the country in school bus yellow but had the tour bus colour added for the film The original seats are long gone and have been replaced with some frames and foam for the film. It runs and stops but will need checking over fully before being registered etc. I will be adding different seats with seat belts ( about 8 ) and will probaly fit a Chevy V8 crate motor and th350 auto made for a RV etc. A new wiring loom is also needed. There are lots of options for the bus but at the moment i seem to be being told its the new Guzzlers party Bus! Title: Re: 1942 Chevy Gillig School bus Post by: 57gmc on April 03, 2011, 09:07:23 AM The front chrome etc is all good

1942 American technology and British country lanes dont realy go together so may have to tweak the suspension some what as it was a white knuckle ride on the way to wheels day Title: Re: 1942 Chevy Gillig School bus Post by: Archie on April 22, 2011, 02:32:12 PM Saw it at wheels - absoloutely massive in the flesh!

Title: Re: 1942 Chevy Gillig School bus Post by: 57gmc on May 20, 2011, 09:58:07 AM Sorting out the wiring it now has new and working headlights,
Indicators next......These where fitted when it came in the country but seemed to get lost whilst being painted! Sourced some similar units and these will be modified to become more period correct. The make do seats have all been removed and will be replaced with minibus seats that i had in the barn, these have seat belts built in but are ugly as f**k so they will at some stage be modified to become more "ArtDeco" and covered but will have to make do for now. The floor had laminate fitted this will be removed and ply lined then covered in checkered vinyl that i believe is from ArtDeco period. Managed to win some new tyres from fleabay and these just need a brave sole to fit them to the rims. The wheels are called "widow makers" as they have a sprung bead that could take your head off if mistreated. Title: Re: 1942 Chevy Gillig School bus Post by: spanners on May 20, 2011, 12:25:53 PM ,,widow makers,, should only be re-inflated in a cage,, and i,ve actually seen a split rim ring wind itself through the cage bars when there was nearly 90psi in the tube :o :o.
if you havnt a cage face the split side to a solid wall and put some weight i.e a few sand bags against the other side and inflate with a very long airline at least 25/30ft with a clip on end which holds itself on the valve also clean the rim grooves exstremely well and the ring itself but only put a very thin lick of primer on the mating serfices if any at all.... be carefull with the inner gaitors as there getting hard to find.. p.s what size is she on Title: Re: 1942 Chevy Gillig School bus Post by: ByzMax on May 20, 2011, 05:58:22 PM Now I love that bus! 8)
I'd have painted it matt black but that is just me! ;D Title: Re: 1942 Chevy Gillig School bus Post by: 57gmc on May 20, 2011, 09:48:43 PM Spanners..... 8.25 x 20 and trust me i will be well out the way when there being fitted.
ByzMax........The paint is to good to play with but if i did anything with a colour change i would wrap it then it could be changed quickly. Title: Re: 1942 Chevy Gillig School bus Post by: spanners on May 21, 2011, 07:46:03 PM looking at youre photo,s and going by the size,s,, gaitors will be the same as early bedford tk upto about 12 tonner, i.e the same as the old brewery delivery trucks
i dont think there,s any left up the old yard ,,maybe one wheel,, not shure but i,ll keep my eye,s peeled when i,m clearing out. Title: Re: 1942 Chevy Gillig School bus Post by: Clive on May 21, 2011, 09:19:41 PM i would wrap it AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe you should have a word with Brock -he's a carpenter & joiner, looking for work & has just sold the most well appointed race transporter in the World -fully fitted out by him & his lovely lady Lesley. Forum member Colboys Chick had a complete set of "English Rose" kitchen units. They were in storage, ready to go into a house which ended up being sold. Might be worth contacting her too.
