Title: Forum problems Post by: Manky Monkey on February 07, 2011, 10:39:41 AM ....and, we're back.
Sorry guys. We've been offline here for a day or so. Apologies to you all & thanks to those who contacted us to ask if we knew the forum was down -believe me, we knew! I've been inundated with texts, calls & emails in the last 24 hours. Nice to know you missed us thouugh. :) I'm not techy minded at all, as anyone who's met me will testify. I type the words & they magically appear in the picture box thingy -that's about as much as I know. So can't really tell you what the problem was. For those that understand these things: I contacted Yoda, the webby wizard who originally built the site for me. He told me we'd used up all our disk space with old back-ups of the forum, (a copy of the forum was being saved every day). Apparently we can't just over-write the previous day's back-up, so we end up with loads of copies. He deleted them & re-set things to back up twice a month. So should we lose the forum all together, we can restore it to what it was 2 weeks earlier. Better than nothing & uses a lot less disk space. He still couldn't restore the forum though so I contacted the server helpdesk. They began by saying it was a code error & therefore not their fault & they couldn't help, but then took a second look & admitted it was their back-ups, not ours, causing the problem. I then had this email from them this morning: Hello Andy, I have replaced your 'Settings.php' file with 'Settings_bak.php' and the forum is now connecting again. I am not sure why the original file is not working but I'd advise paying close attention to it as it appears to have been edited in some way to stop it working, regards, Scott Niven Level 2 Support Services Sales & Support Manager So there ya go. I like to keep you lot informed -it's your forum & without you I'd be here talking to myself, (sometimes I wonder if I am). Now you know as much as me. The helpdesk guys were actually pretty good & have fixed the problem, so I'm happy with the service. We're only a lickle, non commercial website on a fairly small server, so blips are gonna happen from time to time -they do on the best of sites, but we'll always do our best to restore normal service as soon as possible. Thanks for all the concerned contacts &, if you're reading this, thanks for sticking with us. :-* Title: Re: Forum problems Post by: hunter on February 07, 2011, 10:43:59 AM Thank god for that,I was getting withdrawal symptoms.
