22-04-2011, Good Friday, Wheels Day and blazing sunshine.....................

Loads of vehicles, suitable traffic jams too, public by the shed load, and the sound of a fueler running nitro  ;D. Yep, it was the annual Surrey Street Rodders Wheels Day. (well done guys!)

As usual, this event is very well supported, and covers a huge variety of interesting/unusual vehicles.

Another great WheelsDay show, courtesy of the hard working chaps of the Surrey Street Rodders. They've been cursed by bad weather for the last few years, with attendances down & show cars heading for home by early afternoon. Their offerings to the sun gods obviously worked this year though, with show goers baking in the blazing sun & caterers running short of cold drinks & ice cream within the first few hours.
After queuing for around an hour to get into the Rushmoor Arena site each year, (owned by the Ministry of Defence -I used to go to Military displays here as a kid), I hatched a new plan this time, cunningly oversleeping & arriving around 11.o.clock to drive straight in. Sneaky Monkey.
Some truly beautiful machines there. As one of the first big custom/classic shows of the year, everyone seems to pull out all the stops to be there. Loony & I were still in 2 minds -well, I suppose we would be -about taking the Pop along to cruise the show site in, up to just a few days ago. Rather wisely for us, we decided it ain't well behaved enough to risk getting anywhere near all those shiney motors yet.

Derek was there. One of Taz's fellow Mopar Muscle Association members, he was recently attacked late one evening in London & his beloved '69 Dodge Charger vandalised. Thankfully both Del & the Dodge are now fully recovered & looking beautiful again.  :-*

In fact I counted almost a dozen Chargers among the rows of gleaming classic Yanks.
A '68 & a '69 -yeah, I'm geeky enough to know the difference.

Another '68. I loved this low key version -not sure if it's a bottom of the range model, but it's quite refreshing to see one that hasn't been dressed up with all the macho, "my motor's bigger than yours" stuff. Only the red band tyres, a signature of classic muscle cars, belie it's humble looks.

My Dad had one of these. Mark 4 Zephyr I think. I remember sliding up & down the bench seats as a kid when we went round corners -in those far off days before compulsory seatbelts.

Not Stroker Blue's RoadRunner, but a Plymouth Superbird in the same Richard "The King" Petty's famous 43 racing livery.

The 70s are definitely back in fashion. Lots of custom vans from the decade that taste forgot, plus this mint condition Ford Transit. How many of these do you see these days.
Loved the Morris Marina van too, complete with 70s nerf bar bumpers, Wolferace slot mag wheels, flared arches, frenched rear number plate & almost compulsory chromed Jag IRS rear axle.

I used to have a Moggy Minor van.
Rover V8 engine pretending to be standard Morris motor.

The Belch beer truck, part of a current trend for restoring "classic" custom cars.
Mid mounted Rover V8 was super clean.

This roof chopped model A with a B grille looked pristine, but had apparently only recently been repaired after being accidentally driven into the side of a shipping container.

T Buckets are big again, with at least a dozen on show today. Many were genuine 70s survivor rods.

More modern, low ridin' interpretations of the breed too.

How about a Honda diesel generator engined, Royal Enfield gearboxed trike?

If you've never been, I'd thoroughly recommend WheelsDay, Good Friday, Rushmoor Arena, Aldershot, Hampshire.

Didn't see you there Andy. Saw loads of other people - too many to mention - and had a brilliant day.

I think Chevy Rick, Alfie and I were among the first in and also among the last to leave. My first visit to Wheels Day that didn't involve  wellies!   8)

A glorious day, with loads of stalls and an unbelievable number of fantastic vehicles.

It was lovely to look around but also to sit at the back of the pickup and just natter with friends and strangers.

A great event fantastically organised by a fairly small group of people.  They really do a brilliant job and it was so good to see the weather favouring them for a change. The past few years must have been quite disheartening. Well done SSR.

Well done SSR excellent event.
I left my 2 dogs at home shame others didnt!

All went well with the big bus but the GMC had 2 accidents!
1st I towed ( dragged the f**king thing ) a Land Rover from outside my storage unit doors and it
didnt stop when i did and smashed the rear tail gate on the truck.
2nd after the incident above I and the truck where over heating and I didnt tie the lock up door back
so a gust of wind blow it smashed the door mirror and creased the passenger door.

All other 1 day shows have got a lot to live up to after Wheels Day 2011

To be honest I didn't look that closely. The rear section is bolt-on if that helps, and looking at the hi-res photo I can't tell if its a BSA frame or not !!  ::)

The bike was quite a 'special', with long travel moto-cross style forks & disc brake, remote oil filter by the swing arm / rear wheel, and other nice detailing.

Don't understand your comment. Sounds very judgemental but don't know why.

Alfie would rather be with us than stuck at home by himself and he loves to meet people  and other dogs, especially as so many people make a beeline for him as he is so popular on the car and bike circuit.

I know it was hot but good dog owners travel well prepared and Alfie had loads of shade and plenty of water plus he has his own sun tan lotion because even though he loves the sun we have to be careful he doesn't burn.

We had a great day and so did Alfie. I am sure he will enjoy himself at Andover on Monday too.

Cheers Hiboy. We didn't know and hadn't seen anything to say this. Alfie was clearly visible when we came through the pay point and no-one said anything. We wouldn't knowingly do anything to jeopardize the SSR event as it is so good.

Pity gmc didn't explain, if this is what he was referring to.

The car in the photo is a 1954 Lincoln Cosmopolitan (5.2 litre V8). This particular one has been restored as a replica of its Panamerican sister car of 1954.... but looks good dunnit!!!!!!

There's a VHS video still available which is about Nick Mason and Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd in around 1997 doing the Panamericana in a couple of replica Jags.
