Title: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on January 07, 2011, 05:19:11 PM Following a mention of it in the General Discussion section, it looks like we'll be having a pitch at this show again this year.
Sunday the 8th May 2011, the Memorial Park, Basingstoke, Hants. For those new to the forum, this is a classic vehicle show, organised jointly by Basingstoke council & the Thornycroft Society. Thornycrofts were a major employer in Basingstoke for over 70 years, building heavy lorries, such as the "Mighty Antar" tank transporter. The show's a 1 day event, attracting something like 900 vehicles, & 20,000 people. Everything from motorcycles & trikes to buses, lorries, traction engines, classic & custom cars -basically anything automotive & interesting. The Memorial Park's right in the middle of the town, about a mile from junction 6 of the M3, (about 30 miles from London), with 2 fields -one for individual entries, with a few autojumble stalls, & the other for club displays. Somehow we manage to bluff our way into the club field every year, put up a small gazebo, sit around eating donuts & generally making the place look untidy. Despite our best intentions to line vehicles up in some semblance of order, it always descends into chaos as soon as we've got more than 2 machines there -organised we ain't. Entry's free for both participants & show goers, all it'll cost you is your petrol & time, but we need to submit an entry form so the organisers know how many to expect. We usually manage to muster a couple of dozen assorted machines, both finished, running examples & part built projects. Seems the viewing public are as interested in checking out "works in progress" as they are shiny show bikes/cars. It's not often Joe Public gets to see what goes on "behind the scenes" of a vehicle build. Officially the show runs from 11am to 5pm with all vehicles required on site by 10.30am. Transportation is down to you so obviously if you've got something that's not roadworthy, you'll need to arrange a trailer or van -maybe sharing with another forum member in your area? It's not a huge show but it's a good excuse to meet up with some fellow forum faces & check out the projects you see here in the metal. Bring the family along & make a day of it. Basingstoke has a big new indoor shopping precinct 5 minutes walk from the park, with 10 screen cinema, loads of food outlets etc, so even if the missus ain't into motors, she can spend the day spending your money while you peruse the show. The group entry form has to be in by the 1st of April. So. If you're fairly certain you can take part, add your name & vehicle to the list below please. We try to keep these things to forum members only, so we don't end up with a pitch full of strangers, but happy to make the odd exception!
Renegade, I'd be interested in the gazebo if it's going for free -when I finish my Pop it'll live outside & an outside workshop would come in handy. Instructions? Erm, Loony shares ownership of the show gazebo with a mate & it's currently on loan to someone else, so definitely not in my less than capable hands. Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on January 08, 2011, 10:51:24 PM Another couple to add. Mr Flap's orange Reliant trike again, (it's currently sat in Loony's workshop awaiting rear mudguards & a freshen up). Also big Darren's quad & 1 or 2 of his off road 3 wheelers, including this little beastie. a 70cc Honda ATC running a 125 motor. :)
We try to have as much variety as possible, covering the full spectrum of modified vehicles, so if you've got something unusual, bring it along! Twisted Patience --------- Suzuki GS850 trike -maybe? Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on January 09, 2011, 11:05:31 AM Thanks Dave. We'll probably use the usual one for the show cos it does have sides & we can't guarantee the weather on the day.
Yup, Darren's first time of attending last year & the first time we've ever had anything go missing. It's not a closed, bikers only or hotrodders only event. It's free & open to anybody, so the odd undesirable's bound to turn up, but don't let that put you off. Darren was just unlucky -we gave him our Best Vehicle trophy as a Hard Luck award. He's more than happy to attend again this year but will be keeping a close eye on the kids admiring his quad bike. We got an EZ up (1st picture) 10'x15' with sides and a panoramic window on the 15' side if you need to make use of it. Only problem is that we would need to bring the trailer (2/3 pictures)to carry it Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on January 09, 2011, 05:09:16 PM Appreciate the offer Sir. Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on March 15, 2011, 09:58:30 AM That'd be cool. We usually get allocated a fixed size pitch & it's up to us how we fill it. Not managed to create a tidy display yet -it always descends into a jumble of machines parked all over the place, so the more we get, the closer together we'll have to put them, that's all.
Looking for transport to get our own vehicles from Guildford to Basingstoke on the day by the way, (about 40 miles each way). Probably have to rent a big trailer, but will need someone with a decent sized car/truck to tow it. Can anyone help? Might leave the 2 trikes behind this time as we've shown them several times -& they're still not finished. So probably Taz's Dodge Charger, my Pop truck, plus my XS650 Yam' bobber project. Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on March 29, 2011, 03:15:20 PM Just received the entry tickets in the post. Just photo-copied cards. I applied for 25 of them, but if it's the same as previous years, we can ask for more up to a couple of days beforehand, though we won't get a bigger pitch -so if lots of you want to come along, we'll just have to park tidier that's all. Tickets have to be shown on the gate when you arrive. Our normal routine is for entrants to give us a shout when they arrive & we'll bring a ticket up to the gate for you, (saves 'em being lost in the post, left at home etc). The marshals are usually pretty laid back though & often just wave you through if you say you're wiv da Monkeys.
I challenge anyone to organise the vehicles into a proper display this year -I try every time & it never works! :P Twisted Patience --------- Suzuki GS850 trike -maybe? Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on April 17, 2011, 07:48:20 AM Having vehicle logistics problems with our fleet of unfinished projects.
Got no viable way of getting Taz's Charger there -just can't afford to rent a trailer that big for a weekend & haven't got anything to tow it with anyway. That also counts out our 2 trikes which are in the same storage barn in Surrey as the Charger. Still trying to find someone who can pick my Pop up from the workshop in Basingstoke & transport it across town to the showsite. Can anyone help? So looks like it'll be my Pop if we can get it there, plus my XS650 chop project, which will hopefully be a rolling frame by then. Twisted Patience --------- Suzuki GS850 trike -maybe? Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on April 28, 2011, 10:44:37 PM Been searching for weeks for someone with a trailer & towing vehicle to run my Pop project from Loony's workshop, across Basingstoke to the show field.
Hopefully it's sorted now & we're going to hitch a lift on a recovery truck. Ash isn't a forum member but he's a regular at the workshop & races a Toyota Supra driftcar, which we've shown in the "What's in the workshop today Loony?" thread. Assuming there's no last minute problems, he'll bring both my Pop & the Supra along on the 8th. PD's been looking for a project to play with in his shed & my XS650 Yam's just been sat in my shed gathering dust, so I've farmed it out to him to build. Come along & see how far he's got. I'd better get some more vehicle passes. Twisted Patience --------- Suzuki GS850 trike -maybe? I've asked for a few more vehicle passes from the organisers, just in case, & they've told me we should have an extra 20 feet of frontage on our pitch this year. So room for a few more if you've got a vehicle you'd like to show. Every year we say we're going to give out a trophy of some sort & every year we ain't that organised when the time comes. We'll see. Would be great to see you if you can make it. Mr Spanners. I live in Guildford, Surrey, 5 miles from the M25. Essex is maybe an hour's drive away, (depends whereabouts in the county he is of course). I'm happy to act as middle man if Cabby wants to collect them from me, or can deliver if someone wants to pay the petrol costs. Really looking forward to seeing the new artwork Clive -should make a fantastic rolling advert for your work. Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 05, 2011, 10:48:24 PM O.K, we've got most stuff sorted for the show.
Got the vehicle passes from the organisers. Got some banners with the website logo on, working on frames to hang them on, working on a MMMotors trophy, though we haven't decided what to award it for yet, sorting out some spec' sheets for you all to fill in, just to give the viewing public some idea what they're looking at, Loony's in charge of the The one thing we haven't got is anything to sit on. Last year Taz & I brought along our wooden patio table & chairs, but looks like she's working this Sunday & it won't fit in my little Fiesta. Anyone got some spare room in their vehicle & some deck chairs etc we can use for the day? Of course, a nice comfy sofa would be great if you've got one spare! Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: spanners on May 06, 2011, 05:49:14 AM i think you may have to ,,add,, a reliant unfinished to the list (a tad rusty just now 6.45 am friday ) but still working on the rust and other bits ;)

Torrential rain overnight here in Surrey, but warm sunshine all day today. As the show's all on grass, they cancelled it a few years ago cos the ground was too wet for the heavy lorries, but it'd been raining for days beforehand, so hopefully we'll be O.K this time. Taz is working tomorrow, so just me I'm afraid & I'm totally disorganised! No food or drink arranged, so if anyone wants to bring anything, feel free, There are plenty of catering vans onsite too. Looking good for Nellie (Austin A30 from 1955). Famous last words. Should have kept my mouth shut. The fuel pump has given up the ghost. Will be travelling up with Rick so perhaps I will find one up there. I need a mechanical fuel pump, as Nellie is an early A30. I think one from quite a few vehicles will fit her.JJ :) Sorry Andy for the short notice but as Rick said, better to find out now than half way to Basingstoke. Still disappointed though. Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Tony oily bike on May 08, 2011, 03:24:53 PM Just returned (a bit early) from the show..... the first time I'd been there and what a great show covering so many aspects of road vehicles, really enjoyed it.
Gotta say thanks to Sir Manky for getting the group of fellow Mankies together, cheers Andy ;). Hope you actually got to wander around the place. Shame Taz couldn't make it. Also really good putting faces to names and having chats with other forum members, what a nice bunch of folk! 8) Somehow all the rain from Saturday night stopped around 7 or 8am (at least in the Guildford direction), the wind gently blew, the roads dried and the sun made itself known, so the journey there was good as well. The show ground grass managed to survive the wetness too, so no muddy areas either. The 'display' was the only one on site that had a) a variety of vehicle types (cars, bikes trikes & rods) and b) vehicles under construction as well as completed vehicles. The masses having a good old nose around. For me, some of the show was a bit like travelling back in time seeing vehicles that were common place when I was a kid/yoof etc. Classic cars can be found at many shows, but its less usual to see historic commercial vehicles at shows (least ways the ones I usually find myself at) and for some reason these had more impact with respect to my 'time travelling', so apologies for some pics of trucks n stuff (expect some other Mankies will cover other vehicles), but those of a certain age will (hopefully) know what I'm on about. ::) External combustion engine Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Tony oily bike on May 08, 2011, 03:26:50 PM First lorry pics - A BRS (British Road Services) Bristol

The return journey was all going fine till I felt the clutch cable starting to part company! :o The last 20 or so miles were done almost without benefit of clutch - luckily I managed to only have to stop twice - so what if I annoyed the people behind by approaching roundabouts and traffic lights v-e-r-y slowly! Both times it stalled but both time I managed a kind of rolling start and got home! Not sure what I'll be doing about my planned long trip that's supposed to start on Thursday tho! Son in law can fit the cable for me but it's getting one in the time - oh well, if I do that'll be great and if I don't, I'll have to change my plans. :-\ Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: renegade53 on May 08, 2011, 06:57:43 PM jeep with loads of stuff

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 08, 2011, 10:45:28 PM Hi guys. Sorry, been spending some quality time with Taz since I got home ...we both fell asleep on the sofa!
Well, you did it again. Every year I say "This is the last time we do this". I get really stressed out for weeks before-hand, trying to pin people down to attend & running about organising all the little details that need sorting. I hate it. Then the day comes around & somehow it all kinda comes together. I find myself looking at a pitch full of show-goers checking out our array of vehicles & you guys busy explaining how this works or where that part came from -& I think "Y'know what, the hassle was worth it. Let's do it again next year". You did good people. I'm proud of you all. ;) Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 08, 2011, 10:56:05 PM Not many photos from me I'm afraid -not cos there wasn't loads of gorgeous machinery to photograph, but because I literally hardly left our pitch all day. I had a constant stream of people chatting to me all afternoon. Some were friends new & old, who'd found us in the club display field & come over to say Hello. Others were new to me, but loved our display, our vehicles & our friendly welcome. I had several conversations with people who said we had the coolest collection of vehicles in the show & several more with those who remarked what a nice bunch we were! -that's down to you lot. You're great ambassadors for our cause & every one of you's a little star in your own right. Well done monkeys. :-*
Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 08, 2011, 11:10:44 PM I didn't get far beyond the club field that we were in & even then, didn't get there until a lot of exibits had already left, so Renegade, we're relying on you for a full photo gallery! My pics of our pitch were all taken as we were setting up or packing away, so don't really show how busy it got in between.
I tried to chat to all of you at some point, but if I missed anyone, thank you for making the effort & bringing your vehicles. I hope you all got home safely. Thanks to Dave for providing the donuts -no, I didn't have a single one! & Spanners for the Jaffa Cakes -alright, I may have had a few of those. Tea, coffee & some of the seating came from Bikergran. Also thanks to Ash for transporting my Pop there & back & to the Basingstoke boys for loading various bikes & banners n stuff in Big Darren's van & generally helping out. Our crack marquee building team struggled valiantly with the gazebo provided by Renegade, finally succeeding in putting together the biggest tent you ever saw -which promptly blew away & broke. Fortunately Loony brought the back up marquee -ha! How organised is that! The rain that was forcast somehow missed Basingstoke entirely & our rain shelter became a refuge from the sun. I had a great day & I hope you all did too. Thank you one n all. A few of my snaps: 16 year old Ryan's pinstriping. It was built in 1967 by the late Laurie Nelson of Solihull, West Midlands. He called it his steam buggy & it uses a modified 1939/45 Merryweather steam fire pump fitted into a converted London taxi chassis. It's a single cylinder engine, with 5" bore x 4" stroke, & a working boiler pressure of 125 psi, giving a maximum speed of 20 mph. You're impressed with my knowledge of steam cars aren't you! -alright, I looked it up on the 'net. Yeah, we had a great time. Thanks. Good, we'll let you come again next year then. :) -mind you, he hadn't seen Darren hooning round & round the field on his trike. Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 09, 2011, 12:29:36 AM Each year we make up a little trophy, then decide on the day what we're going to award it for. This year's was no contest.
A very well deserved Long Distance award went to Mike, ("Spanners"), who drove an amazing 250 miles, towing his Reliant trike, just to spend the day with us. In fact he & his lovely lady were among the first to arrive. We really appreciated it Mike. Definitely above & beyond the call of duty. I provided the king Monkey from my ever growing collection of monkey souvenirs, Loony painted it & his Dad Dave created the base. If you want to win next year's award, you'll have to join us. Same time, same place next year chaps. ;) Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 09, 2011, 12:35:36 AM Every vehicle entered in the show received a commemorative plaque, about 2" x 3" in engraved aluminium.
I collected them from the organisers' tent & handed out as many as I could, but if I missed you & you'd like one, PM me & I'll bung one in the post to you. I think we put on a pretty good display. For the scruffy bunch in the corner, I reckon we did alright. Thank you. See you next year! ;D Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Tony oily bike on May 09, 2011, 05:31:24 AM Each year we make up a little trophy, then decide on the day what we're going to award it for. Hopefully I can meet more of you at the next event.

Must admit, my heart sank the day before, when it just poured with rain for hours. Even on the day of the show, it was raining when I woke up & I drove down the motorway to Basingstoke dreading a day of sheltering in our marquee, watching my bare metal truck rusting before my eyes. Amazingly though, the skies cleared, the sun came out & at times it was actually getting too hot. I'm having a day off from the workshop today & doing nuthin' -I need a rest now! Nathan, (Galaxie500), in the T shirt, & Doug, both members of local hotrod club The Guzzlers. Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: spanners on May 09, 2011, 12:48:14 PM just been thinkin,,,, did looney and p.d.(ithink) get those pegs under the banner frame.s back out off the ground lol,
i thought they were pegging england to the face of the earth :D :D Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 09, 2011, 12:55:40 PM ;D
Yup, Loony & PD were our banner erecting team. I gave 'em a couple of 2 foot long metal spikes & a hammer & said just whack 'em in the ground over there & sit the banners over them. I thought all the rain we had the day before would soften the ground up. Apparently not! They were worried they'd hit a gas main! The banners were printed by the guy who does our merchandise & the frames were thrown together from bits of Taz's old garden hammocks. Thanks to Loony for welding them together the day before the show. They were in the car Mike. Sold a set of stickers & a baseball cap while we were there. Stickers are 5 quid for a set of 6 or 50p each for the small ones & £1 each for the larger ones. The embroidered shirts & sweatshirts are done to order as we just can't afford to keep a stock of them, (we've usually got most sizes of printed T shirts in stock). I collected an order from our merchandise guy last week though & he warned me the price of cotton has rocketed -apparently there's a shortage of it at the moment, so he'll have to put up his prices. We can absorb the T shirt increase, but may have to add a quid or 2 to the cost of sweatshirts & workshirts. We don't make a profit from merchandise -I'd rather see 10 guys wearing cheap shirts than charge more & only sell 1. So you get 'em for more or less what we do, give or take literally a couple of pence. Let me know what you'd like & I'll get it sorted. Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 09, 2011, 08:50:48 PM Just had an odd email -well, I get odd emails from you lot all the time, but this one was from Doug of the Guzzlers car club.
-but not the Doug or the Guzzlers I know. Hi Andy, My name is Doug, I'm the Chairman of the Guzzlers Kar Klub based up here in North Wales. I have recently found out through your site that there is in fact another Doug and another Guzzlers. I am trying to contact the Guzzlers in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Do you have any contact details for them please? Our Guzzlers Klub over here in North Wales is a thriving local club with our own annual show. It would be good to contact the Basingstoke Guzzlers to find out about their club. How weird is that! I've passed on our Doug's phone number. Just hope we haven't started some sort of international Guzzlers turf war now. :P Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2011 Post by: BikerGran on May 09, 2011, 08:51:36 PM I forgot what I went for too - I passed a stall doing numberplates and thought to myself - now what did I want from a stall like that? But there was no reply from my brain.
So I still haven't got a sign saying "BG Towers" to put outside my mahoosive new tent!
