Title: Talmag Trial - Pre '65 motorcycles - Aldershot Sun 30th Jan 2011
Post by: Tony oily bike on November 14, 2010, 04:43:42 PM
Now this is a good un.........

Sunday 30th Jan from about 9.30am

I've been watching this at Hungry Hill since the mid 80's, good selection of bikes ranging from girder forked rigids to the more modern teles & swing arm machines, and there are sidecars too.

Turn up with your walking boots (it can be muddy and steep), keep your eyes open for the bikes and wander................

http://www.acu.org.uk/Events/January-2011/Trials--Talmag-MCC.aspx

about a mile from Tescos, on Military land to the west side of the A325, south of the roundabout with A323, car park access (a track into the heathland) is from the Wellesley Road.

Pedestrians can get access from the A325.

Old bikes n mud,

Although not footage of the Talmag, here's a British Pathe clip from 1938 of the Bemrose Trial in Derbyshire (I say Mr Chomedley Warner, spiffing commentary!)

and here are some Talmag clips

Just thought I'd 'refresh' the page in case anyone's interested as its this coming weekend. No entry fee or car park charge, and there's always been a burger van, so odds on, there will be this year too. ;)

Found ref to the event at

http://www.dirtybobbers.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=918.15

and have included an action photo from their thread

I love old trials bikes, though I must admit, I've never been to a meet. They just look very cool I think.

A frosty but clear start to the day boded well for good Talmag weather.
Around 200 competitors were found kick-starting various bits of modified machinery into life ready for scuitineering and the 9.30 kick off on the miltary land near Aldershot, and as time wore on, the number of spectators continued to grow.
Most of the competitors are probably (well?) over 40, some however are most certainly into their 60s and maybe a bit more, a few 'youngsters' too.... great to see such an age range all having fun.

Most of the bikes are single cylinder, ranging from 200cc Triumph Tiger Cubs up to 500cc Ariel, Norton, AJS/Matchless, with a spattering of Royal Enfields (named after the place where the Queen keeps her chickens), Velocettes, a couple of Panthers – bet Shaun spotted them!, and an rather rare 1959 MV Augusta 125.

This year seemed to have a larger percentage of Triumph twins in solo trim (not bolted to a sidecar), (maybe building a single is getting more expensive/difficult?).

For those not aware of what Trials is all about, the idea is to ride a course without stopping, putting a foot down, missing a marked 'gate'. Any of these basically give you penalty points, here, less points mean prizes.
There are two levels of difficulty, primarily to split the clubman/novice rider from the more talented riders, and to split the type of bike between those with girder forks (and almost by default solid rear end), and those with teles.

Here are some snaps to give a bit of a flavour of the event, you'll notice some of the bikes are completely “oily rag”, where others so neat n tidy it seems a shame to get 'em dirty.

Norton outfit with heavily modified down tubes, presumabaly to sharpen the steering angle

The thread's had "Sidecar 151" post an entry as this is his machine, and guess what, I got it wrong..... oops! ::) to quote Sidecar 151:

"the Norton outfit" photo'd in this thread is actually a 1948 Ariel engine with competition alloy Matchless head & barrel & my bike. Yes the down tubes were drastically altered to make it steer. Chassis is a (was a) 1956 Ariel Red Hunter.

As the photo was taken, this poor chap lunged towards the headstock as his chain had jumped the sprocket, lucky not to have damaged the crown jewels. Bike is a 1939 500 Triumph.

Lovely photos as always Tony. Thank you.
Can't say I've ever followed trials riding, but there's something very cool about the bikes. Always great to see vintage machinery still being used in anger too, rather than tucked away in museums.
Looks like fun.

Great photos Tony.
Had intended to be there but last minute hitch. Like Andy, not into it but the pre 65 drew me plus not too far a trip. Maybe next time.

We had a fantastic ride up until Hungry Hill section on the second lap we had only lost 1 mark & had set the fastest time on special test so was actually leading the sidecar class. We clipped an inlet valve over revving Hungry Hill with only 4 more sections to go so dropped to many points. We understand that we ended out 4th place overal. "Gutted" ... There's always next year :'( Rob

Hi Rob & welcome to MMMotors.  ;)
Our main website's down at the moment, after being seriously hacked a few months ago, but when it's back we run photo galleries of all the events our members attend. Always looking for informed write-ups to accompany the pics!  ;D

Hi Rob, welcome to MMM.

Thanks for putting me straight on your outfit...... ;) (Have modded the thread to suit) Here's a pic of the downtubes so everyone can see the mods.

Youtube clip shows what its all about, more than stills can. One thing about doing trials is you learn how to fall  ;D

Shame about the motor, looked like great fun up until then, but as you say, always next year.

Used to do trials on a 'modern' bike a few years ago (just for the grin factor), but always fancied a go in the chair of a thumper as well a trying a pre '65 solo.
Chatted to a friend last night who has a 350 AJS, and he reckons I can borrow his pre '65 C15 solo, so maybe this year will get to see what its like. (think I can still remember how to fall off  :D)

couldn't make it this time  :'( :'( :'( Bobcats in bits in the shed and I need her back together before friday 11th to head off to the Dragon...
Love the Panthers, there is usually around 5 little solo's there and I'm guessing the outfit belongs to Jennie from the POC and I a 250 modified to around 380 now and fitted with a Bonnie piston... hope to get my little rigid Panther done and have a go at pre 65 trials oneday...

Nice video Rob  ;D, gives those who have never been a good idea of what its all about (there are solos as well), and those that were there a reminder of another good day watching old bits of Brit iron being well and truly used.

If you know of other pre '65 events in and around this area, be good to know. (Have caught the 'greybeards' before, and some of the North Hants plus Witley & District club events over the years)
