Hi Guy's
These questions has probably been asked time and time again. If thats the case I appologise.

1.   Do I need a a weight certificate to M O T my trike. If so i no where there is a local public weigh bridge, do I just turn up or make an appointment and any idea how much it will cost?

2.   I was led to believe that I could ride my trike on a full car licence but I've read some where that I will need B1 on my licence is this correct?

Depends what sort of full licence you are talking about.  You need a car licence to ride a trike, not a bike one.

hi watsonic,when ever i have taken a trike for mot my tester as always asks me for one, simply so that he can calibrate the machine to test the brakes.all the best zakboy

Weight should be on the logbook and also in the DVLA and MOT records, there computerized system is supposed to handle this.

with regards to riding your trike on a full license.. it depends when you passed your test.. if it was before 2001 ( maybe 2000 ) then you need a full bike license.. if it's before 2001 ( or 2000 )  then you are entitled...

Question is .. would a copper know this if you where pulled over ???

if you are no sure, phone the DVLA and give them you driving license number.. they will tell you if you are entitled.

i think watsonic that the revenue weight will only be present on a log book if its a commercial vehicle

1) No you do not. You would need a weight certificate to get the vehicle class for taxation purposes, which is shown on the registration document. The MOT is then carried out depending on the class of vehicle.


2) Category B1 (Motor tricycles, quadricycles and three or four wheeled vehicles with an unladen weight no more than 550 kg) is a sub category of B, and therefore automatically covered by having a category B entitlement on your license.

AS You state that you have car licence since 1987 NO problem you are able to ride trike

The license bit can get very confusing. I qualify for my trike as I passed a full bike license in 77. After losing a leg in 78 they took off the 3 wheeler entitilement though. When I took my car test I did so in an automatic so covers only for an auto trike. I ended up with several emails back and forth to DVLA as my license does not show B1 anywhere. They insist there is no problem as I took my bike licesne when I did even though B1 isn't shown. I just keep the email in case I need to produce it.

For 'normal' folks full bike test before a certain date (not sure if 98 or 2000) ot any time a full manual car license covers up to 450kg (class 3). After that you need the relevant car license. Think thats right ;)

You can infact ride a manual trike with an automatic only car licence, as the full auto licence also covers you provisionally for manual vehicles, though provisional limitations apply.. ie L plates etc

It can be a long drawn out mess tryin to sort out B1 and trikes with the DVLA etc as no one you ever talk to knows the answer, so if DVLA dont know what chances do the police.

B1 was removed from licences as it comes under the B umbrella, so if you got B you got no worries.
