Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 19, 2006, 10:03:37 PM And I thought Desperate was barking! Love the jet powered scooter though. ;D
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Desperate on June 19, 2006, 10:25:43 PM So you never saw the Jet/V8 trike I built the chassis for some years ago? Exactly the same setup, and just like the trike, all the jet engine does is to throw a huge flame out the back.
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 19, 2006, 10:32:11 PM Was that the black one that's been doing the rounds of the shows for the last couple of years? It was at The Speedfreak's Ball at The Pod I think.
Did you ever host NCC parties at Leighton Buzzard Chris? I went to one once. Seem to recall a field full of all sorts of wondrous contraptions just rusting away. I'm sure there was a jet engine there. Long time ago & the ol' memory's getting a bit fuzzy! :P Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Desperate on June 19, 2006, 10:33:02 PM It's actually an APU (Auxilliary Power Unit). Normally found just below the tail on big airliners, these engines have several power-takeoffs for electric, hydraulics, compressed air etc. They don't actually produce thrust. Owned a couple myself. Just sound nice, and when you pump raw fuel into the jet-pipe, produce pretty flames and smoke.
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 19, 2006, 10:36:19 PM ;D Perfect for Sainsburys carpark on a Saturday afternoon! Where does one buy a second hand APU then?
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Desperate on June 19, 2006, 10:38:02 PM Yes, it is Paul's black one. And the party you went to was at my place, Harley Farm, where I lived. The back of the barn had a concealed "house" behind it. The engine you saw was my DeHavilland Ghost, a proper jet engine out of a Venom fighter and producing 10,000bhp. Hey....they were good parties. I held quite a few!
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Desperate on June 19, 2006, 10:39:07 PM S/H APU. How many do you want? I know where there are a few.
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 19, 2006, 10:45:28 PM So it wasn't just my imagination then!
I have enough trouble sorting out 40bhp Reliant engines! Would love to have one in the corner of the lock-up though, just to casually show to people as "my next project". :D Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: ByzMax on June 19, 2006, 10:58:28 PM I remember seeing an article on a Trike with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine! Taken from a Spitfire. 35ltr and about 3000 hp I think. :o
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 19, 2006, 11:02:09 PM The MSVA guys would have a field day with that!
Wasn't there a Merlin engined car years ago too? Owned by a guy called Dodd I think -no, not Ken. It was a creamy yellow colour & had a bonnet about 10 feet long. Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: ByzMax on June 19, 2006, 11:20:09 PM Yeah. I think it started life as a Capri. As if the bonnet isn't long enough anyway! :D
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 19, 2006, 11:26:54 PM They your piccies Byz? I've been asking for ages for people to send in old drag race shots. I used to take loads on my little Kodak110 when I was a teenager. Used to go to the Blackbushe airport meets at Camberley. The Olympia & Ally Pally custom car shows too. All of 'em long since binned though.
Steve's race car, The Black Pig, was originally Pony Express I believe. Must be loads of photos of that in action tucked away in people's albums. Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: ByzMax on June 19, 2006, 11:39:45 PM Not mine.
Saw these on the net a while back and saved em. Cos I have a capri myself they are of interest. Try searching google there are probably pic's of the pig in it's previous life on many sites. I've lost all my old photo's. Gutted. I have a couple of pics of my Mum and Dad on an Ariel Arrow in their courting days!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 19, 2006, 11:44:34 PM Email 'em in! Biker Gran & Desperate have already contributed some old black & white piccies for the Old Biker Photos bit. The more the merrier ;D As soon as I learn how I'll post it!
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 19, 2006, 11:46:25 PM O.K, I admit defeat! Time to slope off to bed. Good job it's my day off tomorrow!
G'night all. ;D Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: ByzMax on June 19, 2006, 11:52:17 PM Good idea! I'm pooped ;D
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Desperate on June 19, 2006, 11:57:44 PM One-off hand-made GRP body built by John Dodd and powered by a 27 litre Merlin Engine (not 35 litre.....that's getting silly). Nothing to do with a Capri (bloody nice cars). He was sued by Rolls Royce over the grille and badge. There was a feature on it on Top Gear a few years ago, and they road-tested it. It was destroyed in a fire and rebuilt using a Rolls Royce Meteor engine (tank version). His son Paul now runs it (I think). I'm afraid I also had one of those engines, Manky. A brand new one still in the box. Have a look in the "Cars" section of my site. There's also a picture of my jet engine. www.chrisireland.co.uk ......another fabulous Yoda site!
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Desperate on June 19, 2006, 11:58:25 PM Goodnight.
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: ByzMax on June 20, 2006, 12:05:40 AM Ah. someone with the knowledge! Cheers Desperate my recollections are obviously flaky but in the right direction.
Night Love the Indian ;D Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 20, 2006, 11:22:13 AM Aye, we're all just puppets in Yodie's multi media theatre Chris!
Where the hell does one buy a new tank engine still in the box?! Did it fall off the back of a Chinook? No, don't tell me. I can't afford one! Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Desperate on June 20, 2006, 12:39:05 PM Army surplus, mate!
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 20, 2006, 01:10:06 PM "I'll have a pair of size 10 Para boots mate & one of those camo jackets -oh & a De Havilland jet engine please".
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Desperate on June 20, 2006, 09:50:22 PM You can laugh, oh Manky cake eater, but here's a quiz for you. A serious one.
(A) Guess how much I paid for the BRAND NEW Rolls Royce 27 litre V12, with all ancilliaries, still in the box, and including shipping. (B) The DeHavilland Ghost, on a testbed and ready to fire up, delivered to my door (that engine is 12ft long). Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 20, 2006, 09:54:41 PM If you tell me it was less than the tenner I paid for my first Reliant I'm gonna be seriously upset! ;D
Title: Re: Slightly modded Beetle... Post by: Manky Monkey on June 22, 2006, 10:42:14 PM Steve's just emailed me this pic of Mr Dodd's Roller in action.
