Title: disc brake conversion Post by: merv on October 17, 2010, 07:22:38 PM Hi everybody
This is my first time in putting any thing on this site (so please be gentle with me) which i think is absolutely the best i have come across and mankys trike is the dogs wotsits which have inspired me to have a go my self. So i started collecting bits to start my build of. i was given a reliant robin for nothing which i have stripped.i got a copleat front end from a suzuki 600gsxf for 93 quid ,petrol tank from a usa honda nighthawk for 40 quid ,manky monky brake mounting plates from e-bay for 14 quid, brake discs part no from motaquip Vdd 222 for 19 quid with vat. So my question is which part of the hub do you machine down to fit the disc any answers would be appreciated. also what happened to the pictures on the site .Ok i know, when i got something to show i post pictures merv Title: Re: disc brake conversion Post by: Simple Simon on October 17, 2010, 09:15:50 PM Hello and welcome to the site Merv, Unfortunatly the site was hacked a while back >:( and alot of the site has been temporally shut down while Manky and his loverly lady (jaffa points scored there I hope ;D) Tazet work on sorting it out.
I think the info you need was posted on the main site under the technical section. if memory serves it was 'authored' by our very best Mr T-bone, I am sure that when he reads this he will give you all the help you need (unless someone beets him to it ;)) Title: Re: disc brake conversion Post by: Manky Monkey on October 17, 2010, 11:15:25 PM Hi Merv. Yup, Si's right, the main site's been offline for a while now. We've got 5 year's worth of material to sort out & de-bug. We've repaired the forum & the Motors, 4 wheels page, plus a couple of recent event photo galleries, but we're currently running everything from Taz's laptop computer, which has a very limited memory, like me, so that's about all it can handle. When things crashed, we lost a lot of photos that had been posted on the forum up till that date. If anyone posted & still has their pics, please edit your posts & add them back in by the way.
Although we disabled the main site by removing the link to the homepage to protect our readers from the viruses we'd contracted, some people had us saved in their favourites list as pages other than the homepage. So it's still possible to find the main site through other means. We've not had any reports of virus problems. So, to answer your question Merv, the Reliant hubs are square, whereas the Nova disc centres are round, so you need to take the corners off, either with an angle grinder or in a lathe. The centre hole of the disc is also slightly smaller than the raised centre boss of the hub. So you need to machine the hub down a little until it's a snug fit. The hub is softer than the disc & so easier to machine, plus, if you machined the disc & ever had to replace it, you'd have to machine the replacement as well. The disc centres itself on this raised centre boss, not the wheel studs, so it needs to be machined reasonably accurately. Not a big job to anyone versed in the ways of lathe work. Oh, & welcome to the forum by the way! ;) Title: Re: disc brake conversion Post by: merv on October 18, 2010, 01:05:36 PM thanks for the welcome and the reply seems like a bunch of nice people on hear although some of you seem to be slightly mad.i suppose wanting to build a trike at my age and against the misses wishes i must be mad too.
