"Building alterations" -oh, oh, that sounds ominous!  :o
Very nice looking car Chris. I completely understand how you feel -I haven't had anything custom on the road for a couple of years because everything's still being built. Sometimes you just want something on the road to enjoy right now.
Have fun!

hi andy,
building alterations consist of puttin a beam in to support bricks above french doors(theres a main beam 4" behind)
then enlarge whole wide enough for pop and room to work.
contruct stud work along the side an fit window and door(bought cheaply of ebay)

back to pop,

started going through stuff for mot, flashers flashed about 120 times a minute, slightly fast!!!
due to this me thinks.

i tried a yank one i've got here and they flash at a more normal speed, but its not got a feed to warning light.

also trying to get hold of a stock pop ignition switch or similar in good condition, the one thats fitted gets hot with ignition runnin through it, lights are integrated into this switch and still work ok,could it need a relay of some type to stop full current runnin through the switch(which is the 6v original as its now runnin 12v)

cheers chris.

Try Stafford Vehicle Components for the switch Chris.

indicators sorted, wiper fitted, just waiting for the bulbs.

went to halfords on the of chance they had something suitable. :D

amazing what they'll go through to try an get a sale!!! apparently what i want don't exist.  ???

even when i took said bulb outa me pocket!!! ::)

Title: Re: Ford Popular 103e
Post by: Manky Monkey on July 10, 2010, 10:07:34 PM
Bless 'em. I don't think you're allowed to work in Halfords if you're older than 17. So any car more than 10 years old is positively vintage to them.
I was in my local branch this morning. Seem to blow headlight bulbs in my 5 year old Ford Fiesta every 6 months or so. For about 2 quid they'll fit them for you & to be honest, for that price I can't be bothered to do it myself. Wouldn't trust them to do anything more difficult than that though. Took them 2 attempts to get the right bulb off the shelf, even with the old one as a guide.

still waiting for bulbs after being let down twice now, lets hope third time lucky.

been cleaning bits on pop, some parts of paint work just won't shine due to being touched up with by the looks of it a 2" brush!!!

fitted the bonnet tape on one side, i'd bought this ages ago for old pop, this one did'nt have any.

before fitting.

the pile of rusty metal on the left are the old rivets with new shiny brass ones on the right.

this is the bonnet tape.

here it is fitted.

looks better and hopefully will stop the bonnet from rattling.

heres my helper, checking out pop then making himself at home!!!

Geeze, you guys are digging up some memories for me!
Back in '69 my first future mother-in-law bought one them so me and the daughter could go out without getting soaked on my Norton Dominator.
Boy was she conned!
On our first trip out to the country, the engine got progressively noisier, I eventually limped it back to their house - no oil! Drained what was left out of the sump to find it was 50% sawdust - must be one of the oldest con-tricks going.
Still I managed to sell it for spares for more than M-I-L paid for it so all was well that ended well!

Title: Re: Ford Popular 103e
Post by: BikerGran on July 16, 2010, 03:55:10 PM
I sold mine when it started pumping oil out on top of the engine - seemed like a good move.  Went all posh and bought a Morris Minor!

hi,
well the pop had its first outing on sunday, met up with local club around half distance from show.(a drive thru mcd)
then cruised(well they did, i followed up the rear :o ) to show. only about 20 miles but seemed longer!!!

we had all pre booked so had a large reserved area.

after lunch we then cruised back to our local american diner where we hold our club meets as it was also third sunday so club meet day. (1st & 3rd sundays)

pop took some getting use to. side winds realy pushed us across the road!!! apparently thats normal for a narrow beam axle on x-plys!!!

i'm off to work in it tomorrow then cub meet in the evening.

cheers chris.

Hmm, a narrow beam & cross plies you say ...good job I've got a nice big V8 in mine to weigh it down.  :D
So what's it like to drive then Chris? Remind me -what engine's it running?

Title: Re: Ford Popular 103e
Post by: poprodder on July 20, 2010, 09:07:51 PM
noisy! hard work! need to look miles ahead to make a decision on braking etc.....................
no not been to bad but it is noisy and compared to a modern is f****** hard work!!!
it jumps on bumps, leans on bends.
and likes sitting there at 40mph will go quicker but 40 is comfortable.
loved driving it.
just need to remember what i'm driving and why people are staring!!!
and remember to cancel indicators!!
its still got its sidevalve and 3 speed in it.
i've had kev rooney telling me what i can do to it without biva test and keeping enough points to stay legal.

hi everyone,

the pops been out to another show over the weekend, sorry no pics as i'd left me memory card plugged into the pc!! ::)

i've been looking through the rubish(spares!!!) i've been collecting over the years,
since i've had the pop i hated the big mini style indicators at the front and back.

found these which i think will look loads better.

also been looking ahead to winter plans.
going to fit triumph discs to front, anglia axle to rear(which i've had for ages) with mounts on for pop tranverse spring.
going to use triumph pedal assembly's to sit on pop bulkhead.

also a triumph 1300 engine & box as no chassis mods are needed!!!

just need to work out how to mount rear wishbone without torque tube.

Title: Re: Ford Popular 103e
Post by: Manky Monkey on July 27, 2010, 08:41:41 PM
Didn't they have any indicators that weren't blurry Chis?  :P
Nice. Same lights I've got for the back of my Pop.
I've got Triumph discs on the front of mine too -if they can, (hopefully), stop a big ol' V8, the Trumpet motor shouldn't be a problem. Talking of Triumphs, might be worth having a chat with Renegade. He's our resident Triumph car fan.  ;)

Title: Re: Ford Popular 103e

well its started.
not tearing it apart, just bit by bit during the winter.
this bit first, along with front brakes.

has the mounts on for tranverse spring.

this is what will be coming out.

the biggest problem i've got is mounting the wishbone without the torque tube, unless i use a torque tube mounted to the anglia axle.

:) Bless him. Everyone should have a garage mutt I think. I've got Lunatic instead.
Are you buying a new spring or have you already got one. I was looking at them in the Pop Browns catalogue the other day. My front one came from Speedway in the States, via Valley Gas Speed Shop in Newbury, Berks. Could you split the wishbone & run it down either side of the chassis as I did with the front one?

well the parts pile is gettin bigger.
1300 kent x-flow ford engine, anglia 1200 box(long gear stick type) anglia axle, anglia hubs with vented discs, calipers etc.

money spent so far £15!!!! thats for the gearbox! other parts are what i had and kept back from swapping pop.

just got to find a few other bits.

twin choke carb(or a single not fussy!!!) anglia propshaft to start with.
rear tele shocks.

cheers chris.

My anglia (my first car) had one of those foot operated dipswitches - sometimes I used it to change gear with!

Many years ago I used to work a few hours each afternoon for a neighbour who worked from home restoring classic Jags. Nearly wrote off an XK120 when I mistook the dipswitch for the brake pedal!

Yep, it was on mine - but I still mistook it for the clutch pedal - more than once!  Didn't really seem to matter tho if the speed was right it just rolled through, used to do that with an ancient Austin lorry on the farm too!  (and that had no syncromesh at all!).

Title: Re: Ford Popular 103e BROKEN!!!
Post by: poprodder on September 16, 2010, 07:19:00 PM
well the honeymoon is over, the pop broke today, i'm glad it done it
at home as it would of been very nasty out on open road!!!

needed to get some decorating sundries,  decided that we'd take the pop as I
like to give it an airing at least twice a week.

we got home, had a coffee then I thought i'd put the pop in its garage
as the sky darkened with rain clouds,

reversing in I decided I needed to straighten up a bit so pulled
forwards, reversed abit turned the wheel then BANG!!!

then the horn beeped and did'nt stop, I turned the wheel horn stopped
but there was then no resistence on wheel!!!

seems something in the steering department had broken, I still had to
get pop fully into garage as it was blocking rear roadway. turned the
wheels by hand horn started again, I lifted bonnet and disconnected a
wire, horn stopped.

eventually got it inside, turned round and found this laying on
ground.

yep thats off top of steering box, part of the casting at top where
securing rivets go through.

heres steering box.

Oooh, bugger.
Knew exactly what that was as soon as I saw the piccie of the broken chunk of ali.
We bust the original one in my Pop in just the same way. They do seem a bit weak. It's the only component on my Pop I worry about. Wish Ford had made them from steel instead of aluminium.
I picked up a replacement one from the NSRA swapmeet in London for 10 quid, so they're still about.

Just been down to the shed. This is my original. When we broke it, we tried shortening the aluminium casting & replacing the rivets with allen bolts. It cracked again around one of the new bolts, but that was when we were trying to remove the steel steering column to shorten it, (my box is mounted on it's side & hooked up to a Morris Minor column in my truck).
If this is any use to you Chris, either to repair, (a quick bit of ali welding), or to canabalise for parts, you're very welcome to come & collect it, either from our place in Guildford, Surrey or Loony's workshop in Basingstoke, Hants. Yours for free if it helps.

We cut the steel column sleeve while we were trying to remove it from the box. I've also got the section we cut from the second column. Again, a quick dab of weld & it'd be servicable. Come & get it if you want it.

I looked at these before and, to the very best of my knowledge ,it is a modified 100E box. I've certainly used parts of the internals to repair 100E boxes.

I think they are a nice little box, very compact.
