Title: Glow plug failure diagnostics... Post by: o0Mouse0o on April 15, 2010, 06:59:41 PM Had another failure - getting valve and valve seat sorted locally but the glowplug also failed and I'm after some advice.
This is the condition of the glowplug in the side that just overheated and failed (again). Its an air cooled 1974 German V twin diesel engine. During the last hour of operation I can say there was a leaky valve (bent) so low compression and it was maybe sucking in a bit of sump oil through an oil leak in the rocker cover that was dripping onto the air filter. Does it show classic signs of something being set up wrong. I can see me finding a modern slim glow plug the right length and hollowing out and threading the body of this one to take it Title: Re: Glow plug failure diagnostics... Can you let me have the bosch number from the plug you have. I think the NGK no. is Y-811 Title: Re: Glow plug failure diagnostics... Post by: o0Mouse0o on April 16, 2010, 09:08:52 AM WOW!! Where did you find that! I'd like to see the other pages of that book to see if it is the same (or similar) engine.
Looks very similar. The bosh number of my bit is 0250 001 010 and 0.9 Volts! The dropper resistor is also identical, and the regulator can also looks the same. And there are two plugs suggesting a twin engine ;) I've also spoken to a few diesel mad friends who say the oil that was leaking into the inlet manifold will almost certainly be enough to cause over-fuelling and give overheating and this sort of damage to the glow plug amongst other problems A readily available equivalent would be ideal but I'm thinking of knocking out the centre of the two I've got (Or finding a M18 x 1.50 bolt) and tapping it to take a modern 12V glow-plug. Title: Re: Glow plug failure diagnostics... Post by: tbone on April 16, 2010, 01:40:02 PM Its the same engine ;)
I`ve got 3 editions of the manual, the first two are up to 1965 & then 1968 and cover the single and twin cylinder versions, the third version also includes the four cylinder model, they are unfortunatly in czech though, If you PM me your address, i`ll get a disc in the post to you. I'll hold off sending contact info as I'm going to be away for 10 days and don't want to play the missed delivery game. ;) The tappet clearance would be good to know. Your profile says you are in Gloucestershire, As a return favour I can test drive it in your general direction if you want to see it in the flesh! Title: Re: Glow plug failure diagnostics...
