Title: More help please reliant gearbox Post by: gtchippy on April 12, 2010, 02:28:44 PM I Have 2 gearboxes,& want to swap the back plate which holds the mounting bracket, question is does the back plate just come off or is it connected to all the gearing etc.
Hope that makes sense.Cheers George. Title: Re: More help please reliant gearbox Post by: Manky Monkey on April 13, 2010, 08:06:37 PM Hi George,
the rear cover holds the back end of the gearbox main shaft. If I remember right, you can slide it off, but it's easy to disturb the synchro mesh sleeves inside, so be very careful. If you're only changing the cover because one of the mounts is damaged, it's probably easier to just redrill it & tap it out to a larger thread size, without dismantling the box. Title: Re: More help please reliant gearbox Post by: gtchippy on April 14, 2010, 05:10:28 PM Hi,thanks,as you say sounds risky,so will leave well alone,& rethink how i fit gearbox to chassis,as the 2 gearboxes have different fitments, hence my original question.Cheers.
Title: Re: More help please reliant gearbox Post by: Manky Monkey on April 14, 2010, 05:31:47 PM Our engines are solid mounted, rather than on the Reliant rubbers, so I just used bolts of the same thread. Makes it easier to re-tap the mount on the gearbox to a different thread if necessary.

Different how? ??? Title: Re: More help please reliant gearbox Post by: gtchippy on April 14, 2010, 07:47:47 PM One gearbox has a large rubber bush which bolts to the bracket, the second one has no bush just 2 tapped holes.
Maybe one is quite an old gearbox ???? Title: Re: More help please reliant gearbox Post by: Manky Monkey on April 14, 2010, 07:54:40 PM Not sure about the bushed one. The most common is the 2 tapped hole type, which take 2 seperate rubber "bobbins".
Title: Re: More help please reliant gearbox Post by: gtchippy on April 14, 2010, 08:16:13 PM The one with the rubber bush is all one peace on the backplate, where as the other has no bush on the back plate, now i know about the bobbins,i will drill & retap get bobbins to fit then see about making some sort of bracket to fix to.Thanks for your help.
