Post by: TwistedPatience on January 19, 2010, 08:01:37 PM Could be Voodoo or Byzmax and I think there may well be others.

Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: tbone on January 19, 2010, 10:07:16 PM and i know bugger all about anything
Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: master_of_wishes on January 19, 2010, 10:24:43 PM best way to be tbone, cant be told ya wrong that way...
got a seized engine, run low of oil...just wanted to know what damage to expect on a flat 4,is it worth stripping or easier to source another lump? Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: Tall graham on January 19, 2010, 11:23:18 PM Does it turn when cooled down? if not its probably buggered the big ends and mains, the parts are cheap for them and relativly easy to re-build,also if you go that route you can up the cc's for little money,or go for a full on stroker motor!!
Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: ByzMax on January 20, 2010, 12:29:41 AM I know a fair bit about em.
Pray tell what is the problem? I'm sure we can help ;D Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: master_of_wishes on January 20, 2010, 07:42:39 AM Morning,
What's happened is we picked up a vdub as a project, knew it was a non runner and on trying to get it going last weekend we found its seized, Tried turning the engine by jacking up one side and turning a wheel whilst in gear and its seized solid, very little oil on the rodney either (dipstick)lol Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: trikerpete on January 21, 2010, 05:52:10 PM take it out of gear and try turning crank with socket and bar, the gearbox may be seized :)
Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: ByzMax on January 21, 2010, 06:09:51 PM Do as previous post but take out spark plugs and pour some diesel/oil down the bores the day before and leave to soak.
Make sure that you have disconnected ignition so it does not try and start/run. These engines can work even after being left for years. A new set of barrels and pistons are cheap, as low as £100.00. so don't worry if it's buggered. ;) Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: Blackpig on January 21, 2010, 10:44:55 PM When I seized the engine on mine,we filled it up with oil and away I went again.
Unfortunately the coach I put in the ditch in the process, took a little more work to get that going again. :) Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: master_of_wishes on January 23, 2010, 10:18:09 PM had a little bit of time spare today to look at the vdub, took the oil strainer off and found these parts there, any idea where there from, there like broken washer but about 4mm thick??

Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: master_of_wishes on January 24, 2010, 09:49:37 AM Hey andy,I'm not over familiar with the internals of a vdub engine either...don't think they are oil seals, there metal, someone has suggested there the thrust washers off the rocker shaft, find it hard to imagine how such big parts have got to the oil strainer down the oil galleries...
hopefully I've got use of a large garage in the next few weeks, big enough for the bug and thw trike, will make working on them a lot more easy and comfy Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: Rustynuts on January 24, 2010, 01:55:55 PM Not sure about the two on the left but the one on the right looks like a penny to me. :D
Seriously though, it does look like a thrust washer, as seen here on the diagram. The engine I used for this is a 1967 1200cc btw. Post by: voodoo on January 24, 2010, 02:10:00 PM Yep they look like thrust washer....Buy any decent VW mag and there are plenty of shops listed in them for complete motors...ive had a few Thurrock big bore motors over the years in various projects...with Vw's its all about how much you want to spend on it......You can do a full rebuild cheap enough as all the parts are easy to obtain...If you want to give it a bit of grunt upgrade everything, new heads, stick in Scatt cams, 009 dizzy, blue flame coil and get a decent set of twin carbs...then all the other associated bit and bobs...Ive got a few VW tuning books in my loft I will dig out soon that might be of some help...Voodoo...
Title: Re: whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Post by: master_of_wishes on January 24, 2010, 05:03:53 PM Hi,
Thanks for all the replies, unfortunately I've got to wait till next weekend before I get chance to pull the engine out and start to strip down... I looked over a engine diagram and thought it looked like a rocker thrust washer but didn't think it would be able to get right round to the oil strainer. We want to rebuild the engine if possible as its the original one and weirdly it has full history till last year. Hope the mains are ok,don't fancy going into it that deeply. |
