Post by: renegade53 on December 14, 2009, 07:35:07 PM
The 4th Wings Wheels Speed & Steam 14th 15th August 2010 again at the White Waltham Airfield near Maidenhead. It was a good weekend there this year so hopefully we'll have the good weather for next.

had the booking form through yesterday and they're having a bit of a change round for this year. 3 themed pavillions are planned for the weekend. www2 spitfire pavillion 30's and 40's music, rock and soul pavillion 50's and 60's music and finally the glam rock and new romantics pavillion with music from the 70' and 80's. it seems you can book to park by these but i think you have to have the period clobber.
other proposed sections for the weekend are with the allocated space
steam engines 20; working miniature steam engines 30; classic cars 400; american rock and roll section 400; tractors 50; fair organs 4; comercial vehicles 60; buses/coaches 20; emegency vehicles 20; military vehicles 50 (this includes demos and sets so will take up greater space than just 50 vehicles); vintage cars 50; motocycles 200; vintage motocycles 50; scramblers 40 (we are working on creating a track for racing) static aircraft 30.
new sections
modified and custom cars 40; hot rods 20; dragsters 10; racing cars 20 (with possible track for exhibition race); scooters 100.
if they succeed in all this it looks like it will be a good weekend
sat 10 - 8 then rock and soul until 11pm last admission 8pm. dj will be wild cat pete with live music by bernie woods and the forest fires on saturday evening. muleskinners will be playing live during sunday

Hey Dave, what period clobber will you be wearing?  Anything that involves a pork pie hat.

We are thinking of going on the Saturday as Sammy Miller's autojumble is on the Sunday.  Will it be worth it or does everything happen on the Sunday?

JJ, Alfie and I went up to Maidenhead to see what we thought of an event that so many had recommended to us.  I have to admit, it started off at a disadvantage as the weather was pretty dismal and we spent most of our time in a muddy field with water absolutely cascading off our brollies.  That said, I think we would have been disappointed even with brilliant sunshine.

JJ's main gripe was the absence of autojumble.  I think there was one stall that actually had some.  She did buy a few tools but neither of us spent out much.  The majority of the traders were clothing or craft orientated - more like you would find at an agricultural show.

Probably due to the weather (and perhaps being the Saturday) there were very few vehicles on show.  The only club stand was Neil and Justine's Hampshire Bygones.  Matthew (of portafold.co.uk) had joined them and there was a very good showing of Portafold caravans, one of these had travelled all the way from Nottingham, towed by a plastic pig - Jeremy Clarkson's two pet hates in one fell swoop.

We only met one other Manky and he didn't look very well sitting in his Triumph 2000 (see picture below).  He later told us it wasn't him but his missus, who is a size zero!

Overall, this was not a cheap event - nearly £10 each so personally, I expected a lot more for my money.  Never mind, unless you find out for yourself, you just don't know.

yep the weather was crap on saturday, but the evening entertainment went well. better weather on sunday, more vehicles, and the planes managed to do their thing. i'll be back next year hopefully the weather will be better. it is best to book in, though i did see someone who didn't pay and just parked up. a few monkeys were seen over the weekend.
the skeleton did provide some amusement to some of the public, others frowned upon it.

finally a tiger moth doing the limbo. there's about 880 pics from the weekend. the evening music ones (bernie woods and the forest fires) didn't come out too well. had a touch of tooth ache, but the black rat cider helped

Hi This was a brilliant event. We only live 10 mile up the road but took the Caravan and stayed the night. Bit wet though. Glad you like the Westy belongs to a good friend and is one the the Bracknell Rod and Custom Gang.
