Title: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: ROD on December 03, 2009, 06:32:31 AM My build shed roof is leaking, cant make a start on the trike until its fixed!Got more sockets and lighting fitted in the shed yesterday. But I ve decided the roof is leaking too much to carry on with the trike at the moment!Ive put up with it too long ,so now its crunch time!Been pricing up various replacement or repair options. To do it right will cost at least £200 for materials.(new felt roof)To repair the leaks will be about £50 for f/glass(its a f/glass roof)BUT its so wet /damp /shi**y out there ,I doubt whether it will a)stop raining long enuf or b) be damp free enuf to effect a good f/glass repair! Bugger! There is anuver option ...sling the Mercedes out of the garage and use the garage. Just too good condition to do that ..trying to sell it at present, but too many chancers interested! If the right person came along ,I may sell it for less, but not to the existing lot of messers! I may be forced to store it outside if I want to get the trike going for 2010!

Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: ROD on December 03, 2009, 01:24:36 PM Thought of all the various answers to this prob. Good quality tarps are expensive ,and this is a big roof! Cheapo ones rip too easily when they flap about! Sorted a price to re roof it ..£240 for corr sheets! Nope ,gonna have to re think the whole set up Im afraid!

Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: madron on December 03, 2009, 08:35:47 PM hi rod what about flowcoat its gel resin mix with parrafin wax added so its not sticky cheaper than re roofing or re fibreglassing and you just paint it on to seal leaks it is very thick so takes some brushing but i have used it on many a roof only thing is you need a dry roof and dry day only takes a few hours to set depending how much catalyst you add
Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: ROD on December 04, 2009, 05:45:00 AM Yeah I know about flo gel.Trouble is ,the surface of the roof (the gel coat side of the 8x4 panels) is so snotty with green stuff from the trees etc that I cant clean it up easily. Also,a few months ago I denso'd(sylglassed) all the joints,so they are gungy as well! Th roof is 12ft x 18 ft ,so alot of expanse there!Think Imayve solved it (gotta check when I go out there later) Ive cut some aly about 4" wide ,and bent it along its length into a very slight 'v' shape to act as a sort of gutter.Ive then glued this to the u/side of the f/glass,under the joins that are leaking all the way from the apex to the eaves. So when the join leaks(often ;D) It will run down this'v' and out at the eaves. Ive cut a piece of each joist away so that it fits tight against the roof. I used some stuff called all weather sealant, which aparently cures even in wet conditions to stick the 'v' to the roof.Ive done one seam ,gotta do the other3 today! Cutting the aly with snips ,then gunning the sealant on (its thick, and hard to get out of the gun)really caned my hand,so today Im goona cut up some finely corrugated light weight plastic roof sheets I have. I'll use the corrugations as the gutter. The 'flat' part (top of corrugations) will be the part I stick to the u/side of the roof. If all this works Im hoping it will at least get me out of trouble until the spring, when I will HAVE to re do the roof.Hopefully the trike will be done by then ,and I wont be spending so much time in the shed anyway!

Post by: panthershaun on December 04, 2009, 05:16:03 PM Know how you feel mate, the roof of my garage/carport is p1ssing water like Niagara falls, boxes of old bike and car parts are stacked anywhere dry. Cant get to the Indian on the workbench or even get Bobcat out >:( >:( >:( tried bodging it but no joy ::) ::) just got to wait for a dry day (when I'm not at work, some hope of that as we enter the busiest 3 weeks of the year) and re-roof the bugger.
Top that :'( :'( :'( I went up the barn last week to find the front end of the Pop soaking as a door on the loft above the workshop had blown off and the rain was steaming in through the gap and then dropping down onto the Pop, unlocked the lockup bit to find a panel missing from the upper wall and rain pissing in through that as well, luckily all my electrical gear was in the other corner. Jeez I need to move to France and get myself a barn..... Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: VALLEYSBOY on December 04, 2009, 05:24:14 PM dull idea i know but what about using viskeen poly from builders merchants as a temp, it used as a membrane for floors before concreting
Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: trev on December 05, 2009, 01:00:22 PM any buiding sites near you?you might get some used 8x4 shuttering ply, thats how i got mine and cheap as well, then used a tautliner sheet over the top,its been great.
Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: ROD on December 05, 2009, 02:04:44 PM Visqueen isnt uv resistant,as I found out a few yrs ago on my old garage! Shuttering ply is a hell of a weight for my frame construction. When I re roof it ,I will do it in Corrugated plastic,as its lightweight.Anyways, I think Ive solved it now! My 'internal' guttering idea worked!Got it finished last night and it rained overnight ,which highlighted a couple more small leaks. Now all sorted and internal roof panels now refitted.Took me a couple hours to clear the mess up that was left.(am I the only person wanting it to rain so I can test out all the other leaks? ;D)
Thanx for the ideas guys. Rod Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: BikerGran on December 05, 2009, 05:45:49 PM Corrugated plastic - now there's a thought!
My shed needs re-roofing - actually it needs re-walling as well but that's another job! But the windows are rather small and I was thinking putting bigger ones in for some more light - but plastic roofing would deal with that! Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: ROD on December 05, 2009, 06:26:33 PM Theres a company in London ...c a plastics... . They are the cheapest around for all that plastic stuff. I think they deliver nationwide. Worth a look.
Rod Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: poprodder on December 05, 2009, 08:00:23 PM ca plastics are excellent, thats where my plastic sheets came from, just make sure its a big order and don't forget anything as carrier charges are bit steep, also they only deliver when in your area as they do all deliverys themselves, i had to wait about three weeks.
cheers chris. ps. they've a website where you can order everything. Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: ROD on December 06, 2009, 10:26:16 AM Deliv from london to here (essex) was about £25. Even with this added they were a lot cheaper than my local Travis Perkins.
Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: Firery Fred on December 06, 2009, 08:00:24 PM Everybody is cheaper than travis perkins >:( also BG,I don't like windows in garages as it's an easy way in for toerags and there certainly won't be any in my new garage when I build it next year
Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: BikerGran on December 06, 2009, 10:13:08 PM This is just a shed in my garden, inside the garden wall and anyway we don't have many problems in this area. I got the shed originally to set up a pottery - then I discovered bikes...............

Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: ROD on December 17, 2009, 11:59:19 AM Rant continues...............
Well I did manage to stop the leaks,by sort of putting a gutter on the inside under each seam . Worked fine for a few days then...Its bloody leaking again! Cant be arsed to look from where,so am gonna swop workshops to the back of my garage where I first built the frame. Its smaller but will be easier to keep warm in there. When I did the frame I temporarily extended my garage by lifting up the door and boxing in round it,this gave me about 5 ft more ,but have since removed the extension ,so I'll have to get more ply to extend it again! Then Ive gotta get more lighting in there .Son is a sparky ,so away we go again(groan) May have to replace a couple of roof sheets as well...really need this at this time of year! Plus I HATE spending money on stuff like this! Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 17, 2009, 12:10:25 PM Taz & I don't own the cottage we live in -it's tied to her job as a livery yard manager, so we don't want to spend money either. We plan to eventually pull down the large wooden shed we have at the end of the garden & replace it with one twice the size & much sturdier. So I don't want to spend time & money on the present one really. The leakage is becoming ridiculous now though. Thankfully the drips seem to be missing Taz's trike project, but the bench is often swimming in water after a night of heavy rain & the bench vice is red with rust now. We've tried adding more felt to the roof, but there's not enough support underneath it -the nails just bounce out of the flimsy roof slats. I think we might buy several large tins of liquid rubber from B & Q & just pour them over the roof as thick as we can get it.
Title: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: Firery Fred on December 17, 2009, 07:56:44 PM Why not try small screws and a chordless driver instead of nails mate Or put a small roof lat along the edge of the felt instead of nailing it

Bloody murder to sort out as it's not allways straight forwardTitle: Re: Leaking roof stops play! a sorta rant! Post by: ROD on December 18, 2009, 07:25:38 PM Another boring instalment......
Well at last I think Ive got some good fortune on this! Had to check over the roof of my garage (its a precast type with part corrugated apex type asbo roof ,and part corrugated plastic repairs I did yrs ago.)At that time I added a false roof of ply inside ,flush with the bottom of the tiebars, then mounted strip lights to this. But the lights ,altho' OK for me 'cos Im a short arse ,get in the way for some visitors,so today I knocked up a recessed light box to get two twin 6ft lights up flush into the ply 'ceiling'. I cut a hole in the ply to get a good look around to see if there were any leaks that were dripping onto the ply. To my amazement it was literally bone dry up there,so dry I think I may lay some insulation up there.(I also found some tube and stuff laying on top of the rafters ,which I must've sealed in all that time ago!) A nice length of 2" copper tube as well! So-o-o ... I now see an end in sight to all this... Fit light box, seal up all gaps to stop drafts up there, with expanding foam. fit a panel over the hole I hacked out , and add a few more strip lights ,giving me the light box ones plus a d/4ft over the bench ,and 2 x 5fts else where.Another coat of white emo everywhere to brighten it up.A new bit of floor covering from my stash.Add a few more sockets round the walls, and I should be done by tamara night (thats if I can get my son out of his pit to help me before the light goes in the afternoon!)At a later date in a few weeks, when the weather clears a bit, replace a bit of roof with a few corry sheets I found at my stash place. Then its the big move of tools/trike etc in there from the shed on Sunday! |
