Title: reliant starter motors

any one know what type of starter I need for my 850 reliant lump . just changed the engine complete ??? with the fly wheel that came with it . fitted my original starter which was a pre engaged type (the gearbox had been drilled to suit it) the starter now does not engage the fly wheel. I have checked the teeth on the fly wheel and they are all OK. so I think i must need the correct starter ... but which model number ? can anyone help please ....

Maybe wrong amount of teeth on the starter dog? I think you can still buy the new dog for it .

maybe but how do i find out what one to get as the factors dont even list the starters any more ?

are you getting just a whizzing noise??? that could be just a flat battery. try removing the starter and wiring direct to a set of jump leads and see if it throws the dog gear out as far as im aware all flywheels are the same.

There are only 2 options, inertia or pre-engaged.
The pre-engaged unit is used on mini`s too.


who`s part number do you want for reference?

thanks guys I knew you could help . I have hopefully solved the problem as the guy I got the engine from also still has the original starter . just need to pick it up thanks again

Sort of....although the early mini`s did use an inertia starter its not the same as the reliant, the mounting holes are closer together, 4.5" as opposed to 5", 1098 minors use the same one though.

I've never compared them, but remember a conversation with someone once when we were talking about how noisy the inertia type are -they engage with a great clang of metal on metal. Pre-engaged obviously sound a little more civilised when they start. Can't even remember who I was talking to, but they said if you switch to pre-engaged, make sure you swap the fly wheel too.

Probably meant the flywheel ring-gear, not the actual flywheel, Morrag

In the dim distant past I vaguely recall that the was an engine fitted with an inertia starter, with this type
of starter there is a lead on the teeth of the ring gear on the side where the pinion engages, there was a
conversion to fit a pre-engaged starter that involved flipping the ring gear (in practice a new one) so there
was no lead on the teeth where the pre-engaged pinion engages.

Can any one remember what vehicle this was on ???
