Title: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on October 31, 2009, 07:45:48 PM Said I would do a how to on painting my letest helmet project, so here goes:
This started out life like this (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/Bc8FZlwBmkKGrHqMOKiEEq28hfS0BK2HGLi.jpg) After removing ALL the fittings, visor, vents, trim etc it was scuffed all ver with a Red scotchbrite pad until it was completely matt finish! I then de-greased it with white spirit, masked off the edges, visor opening, and behind all the vents, and gave it three coats of white primer. After a night in the airing cupboard (as it's now a touch chilly in the garage), this was then scuffed with a grey scotchbrie pad and given three coats of Signal Yellow. (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0263.jpg) Once this was dried, I then masked out the centre line with 2mm Blue fine line tape, and then laid out 3mm blue fine line tape as the edge of the centre stripe. (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0264.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0265.jpg) The rest was then masked off using masking tape and plain drawing paper. (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0266.jpg) Then two coats of black, and remove the masking tape before the paint has 'set', to avoid hard lines where the masking tape was. (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0267.jpg) Now time for a brew or two, before the interesting 'airbrush-y' type stuff starts tomorrow!!! Part two to follow, if you're all interested!!!! ;D Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: VALLEYSBOY on October 31, 2009, 07:57:12 PM nice one ;D
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Manky Monkey on October 31, 2009, 08:37:31 PM Very interested Clive. Thanks.
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: gazzagood on November 01, 2009, 11:18:39 AM can't wait.very nice
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: smallhog on November 01, 2009, 06:30:56 PM Are you using spray cans or a proper spray gun? I shall tune in for part 2 ;D
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Firery Fred on November 01, 2009, 07:46:28 PM Interested ;)
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Manky Monkey on November 01, 2009, 07:59:05 PM Clive's a proper paintist, so I'd imagine spray gun rather than rattle cans Lynne, though the process would be the same. I've seen some stunning results from spray cans.
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: bitzman5 on November 01, 2009, 11:33:05 PM waiting for second episode hoping to give it a go on a small teardrop tank just for practise
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 02, 2009, 07:48:06 AM For small jobs like helmets spray cans actually work really well. It's just when you have a large area to cover, you end up with uneven coverage, and the spray gun comes into play!!!
Part two is a very short part, as I decided it needed some............bling! So out came the airbrush, and it got a dusting or two of Acrylic pearl ink! Never tried this stuff before, but wow I'm impressed, and it will look awesome once cleared! A coat of Medea Top Coat (A kind of clear 'varnish' that'll protect this stuff should I mess up later on down the line!), and back into the airing cupboard!!!! (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0270.jpg) I promise part three will have some artwork going on in it!! ;D Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: BikerGran on November 02, 2009, 08:39:35 PM Interesting!
I need a new helmet but can't find one I like the graphics on - obviously the answer is to get one painted! Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 03, 2009, 07:22:54 AM By me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
Or give it a go yourself? Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: ROD on November 05, 2009, 05:25:57 AM Can you buy these specialised paints in small amounts? When Ive priced up some little paint jobs (of which I know naff all ;D) It worked out expensive for a pot of paint to do 'just a touch " of a particular colour.
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 05, 2009, 07:13:55 AM Yes buddy. Auto Air, which I personally can't get on with, comes in as small amount as 4oz bottles, most others you can get in 2oz bottles!
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: ROD on November 05, 2009, 12:31:34 PM Just looked at their site ...sheesh ! just reading the list of colour types blew my mind! Think I'll stick to others doing it for me!I take my hat off to those that can airbrush! Some of the stuff is truly amazing! ;D
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: BikerGran on November 05, 2009, 03:10:58 PM By me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D Now there's a thought.... Quote Or give it a go yourself? I think not! Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 14, 2009, 05:00:13 PM Finally got round to doing a bit more on this today!
Part 3. First, the design for the dragons was laid out using a photocopy of the pic and some Tracedown underneath (it's a kind of carbon paper that comes in various colours, but wipes off) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0300.jpg) I then found that none of my metallic paints wouldn't give me the level of detail I wanted, so I decided to use my Posca Paint Pens to lay the design down with. I am also kind of painting it in reverse so it'll look crap at the start, and (hopefully!!) get better as I go along. The pens also give the design a little bit of 'texture' to the body! I'll line it with black in the end to give a 'tattoo-y' feel, and then add the detail with transparent black afterwards. (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0302.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0304.jpg) and that's how far I got today! Clive Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: VALLEYSBOY on November 14, 2009, 05:23:46 PM looks feckin ace m8
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: gazzagood on November 14, 2009, 06:16:27 PM looks super mate
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Manky Monkey on November 15, 2009, 10:24:15 AM You're an annoyingly talented guy Clive!
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 15, 2009, 05:54:10 PM Part 4.
Spent an hour or so on this this morning. Finished off laying the gold of the dragon . (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0308.jpg) After that, using a fine Posca marker, I added all the black 'tattoo' lines in! (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0309.jpg) And finally broke out the airbrush!!! Using Transparent black, I've shaded the dragon to give a bit of depth, and given the meatl 'tears' a look of folding. Highlights followed using a reduced white, and finally some 'shadows' with the trans black again! A layer of top coat to protect it, and then.............start on the other side sometime this week! (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0310.jpg) As an aside, I managed to finish this too! (and a guitar for a PAYING customer!!!! :D) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0313.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0314.jpg) Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 15, 2009, 06:49:40 PM You're an annoyingly talented guy Clive! Says the man who produces (albeit slowly :D) some fantastic machines! I reached the limit of my mechanical skills building a new wiring loom for my Vespa!!!!!! Clive Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: tbone on November 15, 2009, 07:20:52 PM Wow!
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Manky Monkey on November 15, 2009, 08:03:00 PM Slow & ponderous -I think I'm more of a sloth than a Monkey.
That's some amazing work there Clive. I'll be engaging your services to airbrush a faded, scrubbed out version of the website logo on the doors of my Pop when it's, (eventually), finished I think. Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 15, 2009, 08:15:34 PM Whenever you need it done buddy, just shout! As discussed though, I'd just need the doors as I unfortunately don't have the room here to do them when they're on!
Clive Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Manky Monkey on November 15, 2009, 08:23:27 PM Wind the windows down on them to give you more room. :P
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 15, 2009, 08:24:49 PM Surely that'll only let more air in and cool me down !?!?!?!
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Manky Monkey on November 15, 2009, 08:26:02 PM Damn, hadn't thought of that.

Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: bitzman5 on November 16, 2009, 01:38:24 AM Wow fantastic patients
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: gazzagood on November 16, 2009, 07:24:13 PM that a fantastic job mate. how long have you been airbrushing then Clive.do you use water base paints or acrylic
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 16, 2009, 08:15:34 PM About eighteen months now buddy! I can use water-based, or solvents, but tend towards water-based (be it paints or pens) for th majority of the work. Obviously lacquers are either acrylic 1K (Halford-y type stuff), or Solvent 2K clears like the stuff used on my Vespa and Chopper!
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: gazzagood on November 16, 2009, 08:33:10 PM that's brilliant mate wish i could do some thing like that
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 20, 2009, 02:53:35 PM Part 5.
Finally got some time to get the other side of the helmet done! (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0339.jpg) Then once that was treated to a coat of 'top coat', I decided whereabouts the portrait work was going to go (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0340.jpg) And masked off a rectangle (that isn't actually rectangular because of the helmet curves), and then using liquid latex ( :D :D) masked off the part of the dragon that'll end up on top of the picture. This protects the artwork below, and then just peels off afterwards, great for intricate designs on curved surfaces! (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0343.jpg) Finally turned the whole square white with Etac Titanium white paint!! (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0344.jpg) That's it for today, off to pick up my kids from Bristol now!! Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: smallhog on November 21, 2009, 03:44:28 PM WOW! Really brilliant! :o Can't wait to see the finished article ;D

Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 22, 2009, 03:37:35 PM Part 6.
On the white area, I sketched lightly the main area's of the picture (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0346.jpg) Then, with transparent Smoke, added in the background details, not worrying too much about tight lines as it's out of focus on the pic anyhow. The eyes were just boredom kicking in!! (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0347.jpg) Once I was happy with the background, I masked that off using 'ultramask', a kind of clear low tack fablon, and started on the detail! Tight detail is really hard at that small scale, so some compromises were made! (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0348.jpg) Once it's un-masked, and the latex covering the overlap removed, I added a gentle drop shadow underneath the the picture. (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0351.jpg) And my new logo added! (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0353.jpg) The it was the first layer of clearcoat. This isn't smooth, but the next few after sand and clearcoat will improve that. (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0355.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0356.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0357.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0360.jpg) It does start to show up the pearl yellow though!! (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0364.jpg) That's it for at least two days now. As the clear needs to harden nicely. Clive PS, If nothing else you could read this if you're having trouble sleeping. It'll send you right off!!! Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: gazzagood on November 22, 2009, 08:58:23 PM that's great... Clive.can't..wait part 7 . how long did it take to create the portrait. in all the stages.did you airbrush it or use pens.if you don't mind me asking.and what grade paper you use to flat clear coat.Gaza
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 22, 2009, 09:23:53 PM Portrait is all airbrushed buddy, in about two hours!!!
As for flatting the clear, I personally start with 2400 (micromesh), then 3200, before using Farecla G3 then G10 compounds, and then a good dose of turtle wax polish! But I'm sure somwone like Voodoo will do it differently! To be honest, I'm never happy with my finishing, so will be looking for someone local to do the clearcoat and polish on my work from now on!!! Clive Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: voodoo on November 23, 2009, 12:43:24 PM Nothing wrong with your polishing tech Clive,a lot finer for airbrushing than normal paintwork thats for sure, but also a lot finer finish needed for artwork I bet...But do you polish by hand or have you got one of the small polishing mops?....Just curious as I like to know if I am the only plonker likes sitting there for 3 or 4 hours compounding and polishing small stuff by hand lol...I look forward to seeing some more of this stuff....Voodoo....
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 23, 2009, 05:17:00 PM I've got a small hand mop (a 12v one), but will have to end up doing it by hand to get the finish I want!!!
The finishing technique is exactly the same for this as normal paintwork buddy, it all gets clearcoated in the same way! Clive Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 29, 2009, 02:56:33 PM I haven't forgotten about this thread!! ;D
The clearcoat used on this, has taken forever to harden, but looks awesome!! It's just been sanded back with 3200 micromesh, and is back in the airing cupboard to dry, and allow any solvents left that were re-activated with the sanding evaporate. The clear is also in there as well. As soon as I get an hour or two in daylight during the week then it'll get the final layer of clear, and looks like it might not even need sanding and polishing!!!!! I haven't been slacking though, I managed to get these finished! Not exactly custom paint, but great fun to do, and I have three more to do now for paying customers!!! Clive (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0365.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/IMAG0090.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/IMAG0097.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0393.jpg) Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Manky Monkey on November 29, 2009, 05:46:49 PM That last portrait's fantastic Clive.
Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on November 29, 2009, 07:28:27 PM Cheers buddy! Finished it today, and REALLY pleased how it came out. Two and a half hours well spent!!!
Got more portrait work to do for customers as well! A dog portrait, a single, and a family portrait! They're great to do, but I do love the custom stuff!!!!!!! Clive Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Clive on December 09, 2009, 01:12:25 PM Last part........sorry it took so long!!
Finally got it back together today! Took AGEEEEEES for the Clearcoat to harden, but was well worth the wait!! Clive (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0405.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0407.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0408.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0409.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0410.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0411.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0412.jpg) (http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/PICT0414.jpg) Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: Manky Monkey on December 09, 2009, 06:46:13 PM Those dragons are amazing Clive. I like the way you've extended their whiskery bits across the vent on top of the helmet. Probably not much of a compliment, but at first glance I'd assume that to be bought from a shop already graphiced up like that.
Very nice. If it's O.K with you, we'll add this How-To feature to the main site, with full credit to you & a link to your site of course, (might take a while as we've still got a backlog of stuff to do, but be patient & we'll get there, honest). ;D Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... MM, I'd be really chuffed if you did buddy, thanks! Clive Title: Re: Helmet paint how to.... Post by: voodoo on December 09, 2009, 08:45:28 PM Nice one as Manky said seeing that you would think its shop bought, very nice finish, seeing this stuff is getting me excited about doing my course next week lol.....cant wait to get stuck in and learn a few more tricks.....Voodoo.......

Enjoy the course buddy, learn loads and if you have any drama's afterwards, I'm only down the road!!!
