Title: Recon engines? Post by: ROD on October 28, 2009, 04:19:36 PM Anyone ever had a Reliant engine done?
Title: Re: Recon engines? Post by: Manky Monkey on October 28, 2009, 04:31:49 PM Don't know of any companies who advertise exchange units, but if anyone does, let us know.
Ska Man worked out a while ago that to replace everything in a Reliant motor -bearings, seals, rings, gaskets etc, would cost about 200 quid. Might well be much more now. Anyone know? Title: Re: Recon engines? Post by: ROD on October 28, 2009, 04:37:42 PM I know reliant parts world do them ......at a price! £975!plus vat plus delivery!
Title: Re: Recon engines? Post by: Manky Monkey on October 28, 2009, 04:48:51 PM Jeez! You could buy a really good quality complete car for that, then flog the axle & stuff to cover some of the costs.
Title: Re: Recon engines? Post by: TwistedPatience on October 28, 2009, 05:11:56 PM You can buy a new Zetec for only £650 someone had a stall at the hotrod drags selling em!
Title: Re: Recon engines? Post by: ROD on October 28, 2009, 05:12:25 PM Yeah thats what I thought! Just looked on e bay ..liner set £100...piston set £160..then theres the labour and Id guess £60 plus for bearings...
The reason Im looking is i just tried to start my engine and as it turned over smoke was puffing out the filler! Also when I turned it over by hand it didnt feel like there was a lot of compression. It appeared to drive ok when I bought it. As usual Im being too critical ,but you know me ..belt and braces an' all that! Title: Re: Recon engines? Post by: Manky Monkey on October 28, 2009, 05:26:55 PM Not a lot of compression in a Reliant anyway. Smoke out of the filler? That's weird.
Title: Re: Recon engines? Post by: ROD on October 29, 2009, 04:48:25 AM I'll see how it runs(when I solve the starting probs!)Could be valve stem oil seals creating smoke.

Post by: spanners on October 29, 2009, 05:50:15 PM I'll see how it runs(when I solve the starting probs!)Could be valve stem oil seals creating smoke. if youve got ,, smoke,, out of the filter ,and starting problems it sounds like you have a timimng problem i do quite alot with old engine,s that have been stood for years (vintage tractors and the like ) and find that with most once they have run again and got up to tempreture they settle down and run o,k its normally rings,, valve,s etc that get sticky/gummend up.. reliant cylinder liners very rarely need renewing unleess the gudgeon pin circlip has let go and scored the bore. ive rebuilt quite a few over the years had more trouble with crankshafts than any other engine part Title: Re: Recon engines? Post by: ROD on October 29, 2009, 06:37:02 PM Its only been stood in the dry for about 6 months since run last.
