Title: Piping up!...just making sure.
Post by: ROD on October 10, 2009, 06:24:56 PM
Anuver Q.... sorta had a thread before with similar to this.,but not the same..........
2 pipes off the water pump..one goes to stub under the thermostat? The other to the rear pipe on the head? (have eliminated the heated manifold).

 Also......
2 pipes off the top of SU carb. One to pump ,and is the other the overflow? and can it be blocked off?
  Thanx......

Sounds about right. I've never had a carb with the second pipe on the top of the float bowl. Like a lot of Reliant stuff, some had them, some didn't. Yeah, I assume it's an overflow pipe.

not to disagree, but, some of these carbs have a overflow/breather pipe from the float bowl, I've always left them open, it's the breather bit you see. Just to further complicate it, some SU's have a vacuum connection, possibly to be plumbed from the crankcase (?) but these are generally lower down on the body

Thanx. I'd never seen the second pipe on SU's before either. No vac pipe on mine, but a pipe stub sitting at 45 deg. just at the base of the dash pot ,facing rearward. Will have to go investigate on an SU site ..Hmmmmm!

Here's a very good SU site
Burlen Fuel Systems, who still produce SUs.

http://www.sucarb.co.uk/Technical.aspx

I thought you meant the small brass spigot in the float bowl cap. Some Reliants have one, which is the feed in from the fuel pump. Some have a second one directly underneath, which I assume to be an overflow back to the tank. I've only ever used carbs with the single spigot.
The larger bore pipe at the base of the dash pot, at 45 degrees to the body, usually feeds excess fuel vapours back into the air cleaner doesn't it? It's been so long since I last did any engine work I've actually forgotten.
This piccie also shows the green paper gasket between the inlet manifold & S bend by the way, which you asked about. I've removed the water jacket that's usually cast onto the back of the bend, which is fed by hot water from the engine & helps cold weather starting.

Yes as Brock said, its for a crank case breather, sometimes they have a small flame trap in the line, if your not going to use it as such, just put a small cap on it (It will not run right with it open)

Erm, isn't the water cold anyway on startup? Mr.M, but I'm sure its only a Freudian slip!!........
