Title: Fish
Post by: Plasticpig on August 11, 2009, 02:26:51 PM
About three months back the kid across the road knocked on the door and asked if we wanted this fish he had in some water in a carrier bag. He'd been down the river and said he was going to put it down the drain.
We put it in our pond, expecting it to die soon as its a fresh water river fish.
Today my mrs cleaned out some of the duckweed, lilly leaves and other crap on the surface, and this is what we saw.

My other half the angler doesn't know what it is but reckons it's prolly not a bream!  Not a good angle for identification apparently.

silver bream in uk is a deeper bodied fish and looks like this http://www.fisheries.co.uk/news/news/2009silverbream.htm

its hard to recognise what fish you have, is there any distinct colours/patterns/shape to it?

Definately not a Bream then.
From what I have seen of it, it is grey-brown on top. Dunno about its belly.
We had half a dozen goldfish last year, but we had a heron in the garden and only one is left. and the other fish follows that around.

We looked at some pictures last night and think it might be a Chub.

chubb...quite slender when young, lips are fairly thick which are forward facing. some fish have lips that face upwards or downwards depending if they feed at the surface or from the river/lake bed.
