Title: Seats
Post by: Speedmaster on February 19, 2006, 10:35:30 AM
Hi all, I'm back again.  Does anyone out there know which seats are best, Corbin or Rick Mayer.  I think I'll get me a new one but not sure which.

Hello you!
Nice to here from you again Sir! How's things up there in the wild & windswept Lincolnshire wilderness? The Triumph still making you grin?
Don't know anything about Rick Mayer -a new name to me- but Critch brought down a Corbin Gunfighter for us to build his trike frame around. In the end we didn't use it but it certainly looks a well made product. Comfy too I'd imagine.

Corbin are good seats, although every shiney thangs emporium like Custom Chrome, Zodiac, Highway Hawk, W&W does loads of seats too. It depends what you want - it can be just as cheap to make up your own seat base and get it covered. We have an excellent upholsterer round our way (AR Pound in Baldock) who will cover a seat for about £40.

Hi Manky, tiz good to be here mate. Lincolshire is wet windy and stinkin' of rottin' veg, as usual at this time of year ;) I was drawn to Corbin cos I saw they do a seat with back rest for the rider. this is becoming needed as my back is givin me a bit of stick these days (must be old age creepin in ;D) I heard about Rick Mayer on the Bonnevilleamerica.com forum. Custom made to fit the bike and rider. they look vgood if a bit pricey.

Hi Wizzkitt, I'll look round the other makes you mentioned, and your idea of making a base and getting it upholstered sounds good but I dont have much knowledge or ability on self build front. I'm a buyer not a builder but maybe that'll change...  :-\

Yeah! Hardtail it, chop it, trike it! I'll fetch me hacksaw ;D
Checked with Critch this morning. The seat he gave us to play with is actually a standard Harley one bought for a tenner from Ebay, but in the same style as Corbin -or is that the other way around? Looked to have plenty of support & comfiness for lardy Yank Harley riders but is a similar style to your standard Speedmaster one with a small pillion..for small pillions.

What's the bike, Speedmaster? If it's a standard Hinckley Bonnie, then there's a firm doing really nice retro-looking seats that fit straight on. Of course, I can't remember the name of the company, but I'll dig it out for you.

Mmmm nice!

When I went to the TT a few years ago I was scared enough getting my GT550 piled with luggage onto the boat, going up and around like a multi-storey car park, but when the bloke in front dropped a brand new Speedmaster right in front of me I nearly pee'd myself!

He was an American journo who'd borrowed the bike from Triumph for the trip to the Island  - oops!

Hi Bobbi. Still waiting for that write up on your trike! ;D
Mr SpeedMaster is of the lofty variety, 6, 2  or 6, 3 so getting his big ol' feet planted firmly on the ground when he's on the Triumph shouldn't be a problem. How does this one compare to your previous touring model Sir? Was that a Sprint or a Trophy or something?

Falling over in public, everyones nightmare ::)

Twas a 1200 Trophy.  Very big, very heavy, very fast (for li'l ol' me anyway).  Proved to be too big and heavy for my usual riding needs,  so it had to go. Shame in a way, still miss it sometimes. The SM has turrned out to be a much better, for me, bike.  Not too big or heavy, fast enough, and easy to handle.

I really, REALLY miss my Speed Triple. Never owned a standard, (ish), bike before, but I'd regularly just sit & look at it & think That is a beeyootiful bike. Not so keen on the new model but quite like the retro trailie thing they're doing.
I once forgot to take the disc lock off the front wheel before pulling away. A packed high street in London during the Magna Carta rally weekend. Loads of bikers & public. Big handful of throttle, travelled about 4 feet, CLUNK. The lock jammed up against the back of the fork leg & I went sailing straight over the bars. Not at all cool. :(

Worst one I had was in the middle of Newbury, just putting my old 750 Honda on the center stand, foot slipped, bike tipped away from me, there I was stuck in that midway point. Couldnt pick it up, had to lay it down as gently as poss, run round the other side, pick it up, put it on the side stand and walk away as if nothing happened.  Darent look anyone in the eye though.

Same weekend as the Welsh National, which I really enjoyed last year, but possible. You keep threatening to do the Ural thing. I think you should. They look like a lot of fun -in a white knuckle, screaming in terror kinda way. Would be a great 2nd bike just to blat around on in the Summer, or probably better as a Winter hack.

Winter hack is what I was thinking, when I've got the spare cash to get one.  At Bruntingthorpe last year the guy from MPC Ural was there giving off road rides in a combo.  Couldnt have a go then coz of my back, but hopefully this year I'll be able to.
