Title: vaccum for wot?
Post by: tbone on May 29, 2009, 09:27:08 AM
i`ve just picked up another reliant engine (i`m thinking ahead  ;)), this one has a block between the carb and inlet manifold with a connector and very long pipe coming off it, presumably a vacuum for something? anyone know what is was for?

My day off -so there. Taz & I are just leaving to go look at her Charger.
That looks distinctly home made to me TB. Don't recognise it at all. Looks almost like a bike inlet spacer. Maybe been used to provide a take-off for a vacuum gauge? The heated inlet manifold is missing & the carb's been turned to face outward rather than over the engine as normal, so presumably the motor's been played with.

it could be out of a reliant kitten  they had verius  oddments on them over the years and some did have vac gauge,s in the dash  etc

Erm....sorry, the carb was me. I pulled it off to get a better look at that spacer block and just sat it on for the photo. I`m not too worried cos i`m gonna bin the block anyway, just curious as none of the reliants i`ve seen before had one.

Edit: Kitten with a vac guage, didn`t know they used them, but then again, i`ve never seen one in the flesh! cheers mate  ;)

might still have one some where in the big shed there,s a kitten dash complete  it came outa the the ex brother in laws car when he fired the engine bay   (he used to put a blanket over the engine at night in the winter to keep the frost off coz he was to tight to buy anti freeze and one day he forgot to take it off  and ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,up she went)

I nearly did the same to a mk2 cortina, luckily the fan blades caught the blanket first and i was alerted by the sound of the fan belt squeeling on the now motionless waterpump, ahh happy days  ;D

Saw a bright orange Kitten on my Postal round the other day -the Reliant species, not a ginger tom cat. Belongs to one of the local tech college kids I think. A much cooler first car than a cr*ppy little hatchback in my opinion!
-for those not familiar with them, Kittens were the 4 wheeled version of the more common Reliant 3 wheelers & used the same engine/gearbox/back axle.

Normally comes off the carb itself.

Reliants definitely ain't power assisted!

if the engine has come out of a trike, could it have been for a vacum tap in the tank ?

power steering was a joke  ;D

The steering on standard Reliants is a joke too.  :P

a bit more info, its from a kitten, so assume vac gauge. The guy that bought the kitten is gonna put a bike engine into it, not sure which one yet cos he has a choice of 2, should be a flyer though!

Seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment -saw several bike engined projects at the Billng Aquadrome rod show in Northampton at the weekend.
How about a GSXR engined Reliant Bond Bug?! I was a passenger in one of these once as a teenager & still remember it as one of the scariest journies of my life. With a bike engine in place of the normal Reliant lump it must be truly terrifying. I like it though.  8)

Or how about a Yamaha engined Austin/Morris pick-up?

A fibreglass bodied Fordson van -what's the motor nestled in the back?

Yeah, kinda confused me too, but these were the only snaps I managed to grab before the crowds closed in round it -where do they come from as soon as you point a camera at a car?

All very nice, and nicely done Andy, but the Morris Pick-Up is something else! Morrag

Wonder what a bike engined car would be like to drive? Must be very high revving compared to a "normal" car. What would you do about reverse?

See those Bond Bug things, were they all Reliant powered ? reason i ask is,i saw one about 30ish years ago with a R.E Constellation engine in.

they started out with a reliant  700e engine and finished production as a 850cc super bug

Hillbilly, what you saw was probably a Berkley, a glassfibre bodied 4 wheeler, they fitted the big Enfield engine as standard, and also made a 3 wheeler, 2 wheels at front, using a 3 cylinder 2-stroke engine, from British Anzani I think, Morrag

I guess if it's bike engine you could use a Quaife reverse - if you had lots of pennies!
