Title: Classic Vehicle Gathering & Autojumble - Rural Life Centre, Tilford
Post by: Plainy Janie on May 13, 2009, 05:31:00 PM
This is one event I love to go to!

The Surrey Classic Vehicle Club are holding their annual Classic Vehicle Gathering and Autojumble, all vehicles are assembled around many aspects of village and rural life realistically displayed in individual settings including agricultural work shops, garages, a 1947 prefab (my favourite), stalls of autojumble are dotted around the whole place, period music playing throughout the day, this year they are asking you to dress in the era of your car!

The Rural Life Centre is a country life museum, assembled by the late Mr & Mrs Henry Jackson and now run by a charitable trust. It is pleasantly distributed over ten acres of field, woodland and barns, and comprises a large number of implements and devices marking over 150 years of farming.

September 20th 2009

What a lovely day out.

Weather was very kind and the turnout was excellent with the main show areas being full and those arriving without pre-registering (including me) having to park in an overflow field.

The vehicles on show were interesting and good to see, with quite a few I haven't seen before, but what was most interesting were all the exhibits at the museum that are spread about the grounds of the Rural Life Centre.  These included a small church, a schoolroom, a pre-fab furnished to suit the time period and a multitude of tools and memorabilia that represent rural life in Britain's days gone by.  The place is loaded with nostalgia and if this is your thing then we would thoroughly recommend a visit (the place is good for the kids too with a play area and little tasks for them to complete around the site).

Today, many visitors dressed in period clothes (many to suit the vehicles they arrived in) and this really gave the whole event a wonderful feeling of simpler times.

JJ and I met up with quite a few familiar faces including BoopoopadoopGal and Postie Dave and we spent a couple of hours in our day just having a chinwag and taking in the lovely atmosphere.  The food is good at the museum's cafe (and reasonably priced) and we managed to include a couple of visits.  :P

Here is just a brief glimpse of the sights we enjoyed.  More will follow on disc.

Below gives you an idea about how the centre is laid out:

Great photos. We went there last year and it is a lovely place to visit and wander for a while.
