Like the Viva estate -still looks quite a cool car.

Post by: Manky Monkey on December 02, 2005, 09:25:42 PM For Bikers, we've owned an awful lot of cars haven't we! Think the models give away our age group a little too! My Mum had a notchback Anglia. Dark blue. RPC 456E. That's weird isn't it. Must be 35 years ago & I still instantly remember the registration -but can't remember where I left my bike keys half an hour ago.
She also had a Hillman Imp in aqua-marine that overheated & died. My Dad used to be a partner in a building company in London in the 60s & 70s. Lots of big housing projects & the like. They bought a fleet of three brand new silver Zephyr Zodiacs for cash. Huge cars, bench seats, column gear change I think, bonnets a mile long. He also had a Morris Oxford. White with bright red upholstery. I used to get a lift home from cub scouts every week in my mate's Dad's mark 3 Zephyr -as used in "Z Cars". Sage green it was. Big comfy bench seat. Always remember it as being a big, cosy comfortingly warm car. Proper cars. :) Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: flap on December 02, 2005, 10:05:54 PM We had a Mk 1 Capri when I was young 1600 GT, lovely car.
Manky, you had 2 maestro's, why? wasn't the first one crap enough. Crashed a Viva into a lamp post once. Stupid car. Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 02, 2005, 10:11:34 PM Stupid!! They were classics! Mine was metallic green with an electric aerial that cost me more than the radio.
Used the Maestros to commute from Newbury to Basingstoke sorting office in the early hours of the morning. Crashed the first one into a milk float. Crashed the second into a badger. Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: flap on December 02, 2005, 10:38:17 PM MK 1 Fiesta 1300 Ghia

Post by: Manky Monkey on December 02, 2005, 11:06:16 PM Is that all? Pah! A pretty short list isn't it. You're too young for this rose-tinted thread.
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: flap on December 03, 2005, 12:14:44 AM you missed horse and cart off your list. :P
Thats 18 years of motering, never went for the 'classics' or crap as there better known. Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Urban Terrorist on December 03, 2005, 02:21:02 AM My viva was silver ;D
Solid engine, shame the bodywork just fell apart >:( All them cars, never drove them legaly though :-[ Oh forgot, my last motor: http://www.avtomonitor.ru/ico/11300.jpg BMW 518, mine had twin webers and was 7 different shades of red. turned out to be a cut and shut job. Got it off my old man, after he had been driving the family around in it for 2 yrs!!! Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 03, 2005, 10:57:14 AM I've clocked up 26 years of motoring so far. Those classics weren't so classic then. They were only a few years old. Loved my Viva. A mate in my bike club had one in Dukes of Hazzard colours -jeez! I'd forgotten that! Must've buried that deep in my subconcious somewhere. Some things are best forgotten I think.
What were the fast back Vivas called? Firenzas? They were a nice looking motor. Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: flap on December 03, 2005, 02:13:20 PM one of these?
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Urban Terrorist on December 03, 2005, 04:53:15 PM Only ever saw one of those at the Vauxhall luton museum about 11 yrs ago ;D
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 03, 2005, 05:35:28 PM That's the ones. That's not the original nose on that one though. It's got the "droop snoot" conversion kit.
I drove my Moggy Minor to a motor museum once & the one they had on display was younger than the one I'd arrived in. Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: BikerGran on December 03, 2005, 06:04:53 PM Those classics weren't so classic then. They were only a few years old. . Always amuses me when I go to a local event, the Purbeck Rally - I walk round the cars saying "I had one of those.... My dad had one of those....." Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 03, 2005, 06:07:57 PM One of Gypsy & Doro's customers is restoring an FS1E. You couldn't GIVE those little Fizzies away when I were a lad. Now they're classics.
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: BikerGran on December 03, 2005, 06:22:43 PM I think this was my favourite of all the car my dad owned - and there were quite a few! Haven't got one of his actual car but these are quite good - his was a kind of warm fawn with dark cherry-red wings - and interior to match. It's a Healey Tickford.
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 03, 2005, 06:30:47 PM That's a new one on me. Never heard of those. Strange colour scheme. A warm fawn would be Bambi wouldn't it? Bambi didn't have wings though.
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: BikerGran on December 03, 2005, 06:40:40 PM Sounds awful but it was beautiful! And boy did it go! But it was a coachbuilt job and dad had to part with it cos one of the wooden door pillars was rotting, would have cost a fortune to replace! If I ever find my photos, I'll have to see if they show the index, and check whether it's still on the road.
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 03, 2005, 06:51:13 PM Wish I'd kept all my old photos. Haven't got any from my dim & distant youth & the poor old memory's fading fast!
I don't own a car any more, simply cos I don't need one, (& couldn't afford to run one), so I hire them from time to time. They're all very nice & all perform perfectly well but I can't tell them apart. Every model seems the same. No character. No soul. Nothing memorable about them at all. Just a tool to get from A to B. Boring. Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Urban Terrorist on December 03, 2005, 08:55:31 PM I never took photo's when I was younger( says the whippersnapper ;D) ::)
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 03, 2005, 09:40:00 PM I took loads. Was always the one with the camera on bike club runs, but have slowly lost 'em all over the years. I'm not THAT old! 43. :)
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: trikerpete on December 03, 2005, 10:41:48 PM Those classics weren't so classic then. They were only a few years old. . Always amuses me when I go to a local event, the Purbeck Rally - I walk round the cars saying "I had one of those.... My dad had one of those....." hi "b g" whats the "purbeck rally"? sounds ok, any more info please. thanks, pete Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: BikerGran on December 03, 2005, 11:11:26 PM I knew someone would say that! It's a weekend evnt just up the road from me near Wareham, Dorset, for classic vehicles of all sorts - cars, bikes, trikes, lorries etc.
There's a big autojumble/boot sale, lots of stall with tools etc, a small event but always very enjoyable and almost always in good weather! Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 04, 2005, 09:47:40 AM Sounds a good 'un Bobbi. Similar to the Basingstoke Festival of Transport. When's that held then?
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: BikerGran on December 04, 2005, 11:26:04 AM It's usually sometime round August/September. Can't find any info for 2006 yet, but I'll post it when I find out. It's a very small event, and sometimes the organisation leaves a little to be desired -from the public visitor side - can't say about exhibitors cos I haven't been one yet.
But there's always beer and ice cream and usually sunshine! And camping cos it's a 2 day event, and there's a road run as well but not sure exactly who goes on that. Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Urban Terrorist on December 04, 2005, 01:15:20 PM I'm not THAT old! 43. :) Sorry dad ;D ;D ;D Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 04, 2005, 07:04:15 PM Yeah, let us know when you've got details Bobbi. Being an oldie, it sounds like my kinda thing. :D
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: critch on December 05, 2005, 07:15:01 PM a mini.....
fekkin hate cars ;D Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 05, 2005, 08:07:27 PM ;D 'm not keen on most modern cars. Don't do anything for me at all, but like anything that's got a bit of character to it.
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: critch on December 10, 2005, 08:18:35 PM ;D 'm not keen on most modern cars. Don't do anything for me at all, but like anything that's got a bit of character to it. just as well as it would have a bit of a charecter in it ;D Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 10, 2005, 08:42:34 PM ;D I'll take that as a compliment!
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Borgy on December 11, 2005, 09:10:37 AM Well the Escort I was looking at turned out to be a scrapper.
I'm thinking of a Mk1 Capri now, did get offered a Herald but after consideratoion decided against it, quite a few owners say there not the safest things to drive around in nowadays as the brakes are totaly pants and other stuff. Trouble with being stuck out here on the edge of the world is everything thats for sale is bloody hundreds of miles away and I can't get to see them Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: BikerGran on December 11, 2005, 01:02:39 PM Don't people in mid-Wales sell their cars then Borgy?
Mike is getting a new car (new to him!) and we got to get rid of the old one - it's a Citroen BX19 diesel, brilliant engine but the rest? Dented on all 4 corners, radiator leaks, blower doesn't always work, and the drainage channels for the sunroof are blocked so all the water ends up inside, on the floor in the back! Reckon we'll have to pay someone to take it away! Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Borgy on December 11, 2005, 01:07:18 PM not around this area, well they sell cars but there mostly newish things I don't want
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: BikerGran on December 11, 2005, 01:13:58 PM Also I guess the population density is much lower so there are less cars anyway. Thats what I always notice when I travel to Wales!
Except on the A465 from Swansea to Merthyr Tydfil which always seems to have all the cars in Wales on it - mostly standing still in front of me! Not so bad when I was biking but I'll have to try and avoid it now I'm a triker. Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Borgy on December 11, 2005, 01:49:45 PM yep most cars on the roads around here in Summer are Yam yams on a voyage of discovery
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 11, 2005, 02:01:11 PM Dented on all 4 corners, radiator leaks, blower doesn't always work Quote You got a supercharger on it Bobbi?! Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 11, 2005, 02:03:09 PM Borgy, if you're desperate for a mark 1 Escort there's one parked outside a local auto-factors here everyday. Belongs to a young lad who works there I think. Mettallic leaf green. Quite tidy.
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Borgy on December 11, 2005, 02:14:58 PM probably wants silly money for it though.
I'm thinking of this as well http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4596509183 Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 11, 2005, 02:22:05 PM Nice looking car mate.

Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Urban Terrorist on December 11, 2005, 05:20:33 PM YES!!! Matt black!! ;D ;D

Mike just sold it for £50! Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 11, 2005, 07:30:57 PM If you sold it for that price round here it'd go to an illegal immigrant -sorry, genuine asylum seeker, or Polish immigrant worker who'd drive it round with no licence, tax, insurance or MOT until they ran into somebody then abandon it.
Cynical? Me? Yup. Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: BikerGran on December 11, 2005, 09:45:59 PM This is someone he knows who just wants it for a runaround till the MOT expires - I guess £50 is ok for that.
Title: Re: Car's you've had!! Post by: Manky Monkey on December 12, 2005, 01:40:48 PM A bargain price for a few months transport. Would cost you more on the bus.
I'm looking for an old Moggy Minor or similar steering wheel for my rod by the way if anyone has one. The early "Banjo" type -3 wire rods forming each spoke of the wheel. |
