Title: The Orange one.
Post by: flap on November 29, 2005, 03:52:44 PM
The evil propshaft is on, it put up a good fight but good(looking) prevailed over evil. Battery box is also on, so all thats left is to convince Reg that he would like to spend a cold Saturday in my extensive workshop (council lock up) wiring the trike up. Then its off into the sunset, or a parked car I shall go.

So you've made the exhaust system, fitted the radiator hoses, filled & bled the brakes, sealed & fitted the tank, made the handbrake cable bracket, had the cables made & fitted them ...& all the other bits & pieces,, since I saw it last week then?

Title: Re: The Orange one.
Post by: flap on November 29, 2005, 07:19:58 PM
Don't need an exhaust or handbrake to make it go. Just need hoses. If I can ever find some that fit.

Gonna run it on just the cast iron manifold? A flame spitting Reliant. I look forward to seeing that! Can make it go but something to make it stop might be a good idea too!
Anyone know of a 1 inch bore radiator hose with a tight S bend in it? The trikes are using Mini radiators mounted in front of the front down tubes so we need a short length of hose that'll bend around the frame tube.

Title: Re: The Orange one.
Post by: BikerGran on November 30, 2005, 02:40:57 PM
I saw an article once about how to bend 'em yourself - I think you had to fill them with sand, tie them into the shape you want, then boil them for a while and let them cool right down before you untie them.
You fill them with sand to stop them squashing flat where you bend them.  Worth a try on an old hose to see how it goes?

Title: Re: The Orange one.
Post by: Manky Monkey on November 30, 2005, 02:46:52 PM
Used to fill metal tubing with sand before bending years ago for the same reason. Thanks Bobbi, certainly worth a go. Are you paying attention Mr Flap?

Yep. Thanks B G. Will try that, sounds like it might just work.  :)

;D Give 'im a chance! It's taken him 2 years to get as far as he has. You don't really think he'd have made & fitted a new hose in a few days do you! Ask again next month. Sounds like it should work though.

Title: Re: The Orange one.
Post by: flap on December 05, 2005, 12:55:47 PM
'tis true, could take me some months before I try it.  :)

Oh, you peeps make me feel much better about the bikes I have sitting in the garage waiting for attention!

The Honda's only been waiting 5 years!

I'm a very, very busy Monkey. Flap's just slow. :)

Boiled a radiator hose today, let it cool down, untied it and.......................................... it pinged back into shape. D'oh  :(

Mmm, shiny stuff! Flap's only got a little hose, (!), so don't think there'd be room for the great big clamps on that set-up but I wonder if it'd work with big jubilee clips?

Title: Re: The Orange one.
Post by: flap on December 08, 2005, 09:24:43 PM
Thats what I need but the hose diameter is to big by 3/8"   :(
 I want shiny hoses now.

Title: Re: The Orange one.
Post by: Manky Monkey on December 08, 2005, 09:35:34 PM
Make 'em up in steel, get 'em chromed then fit with short lengths of rubber hose?

Title: Re: The Orange one.
Post by: flap on December 08, 2005, 09:45:15 PM
Think I'm gonna have to get some of these and join several hoses together to get the right shape.

Reg, our friendly local 'leccy bloke is busy wiring up Flap's Reliant at the moment. Should be ready for it's first fire-up, (not literally I hope, but I'll be standing by with the fire extinguisher & camera just in case), next weekend. Can't believe how many wires there are in that battery box! I'm sure half of them are just for show!

Title: Re: The Orange one.
Post by: Manky Monkey on January 02, 2006, 08:25:41 PM
He's drawn up a proper wiring diagram an' everything.
Flap has absolutely no idea what's going on but tries to look useful.

Was in Halfrauds yesterday looking for bits to bodge a T piece for the vacuum pipe on my Maestro, and I noticed they had flexible hoses in all lengths and diameters - not very pretty, they're corrugated - a bit like fork gaiters - might solve your problem Flap?

Title: Re: The Orange one.
Post by: flap on January 18, 2006, 05:28:21 PM
Yep, seen them hoses B-G. But I think I've sorted it now, used standard Reliant hoses cut and turned and joined together with aluminium hose joiners.

Next big problem is the brakes leaking at all the banjo's and joints. Think I might try Dowty seals, anyone got any suggestions.

Isn't bike building fun!
Critchy, your axle clamps are done. So are the front engine mounts, will do the gearbox mounts tomorrow. We've also started on the bottom frame tubes & are waiting for Reg to finish off the headstock bearing cups. as soon as the front end arrives it should be full steam ahead. ;)

Hmm, not sure about the huge tank, & sounds like it needs some serious work. The rest of it looks in good nick though. Got enough projects already without taking on another non-runner!
Can't decide whether to try & sell my Honda, bank the pennies & get the trike sorted, or look for another bike to play with. How much is your Sporty going for Critchy Poos? Borrowed my mate's 883 a few years back. Was nice -reminded me of my old Bonny. Very lightweight & nimble. Not into the whole image thing but quite like the actual bikes. Tough & simple -like me!

Spring 2005, that is...

Welcome back WizzyPoos! Knew you couldn't resist our collective cutesy fluffiness for ever.
Erm, possibly the same one, yes. Is it my fault the owner's a Muppet?! Did my bit on it several lifetimes ago. Whole species have evolved & died in the time it's taken Flap to bolt that thing together. Nuffink to do wiv me, honest.
How's the hotrod project coming along?

HA, HA, HARRR!!
You say that like you really believe it! My tricycle will be WAY prettier than yours. :P So you've fitted the exhaust, had handbrake cables made up, painted the tank, made & fitted some mudguards, filled up the cooling system, fixed the leaky brake lines....It'll NEVER be finished mate. Just checked the time. It's my day off & I've only just got up. What you doing home from work at 10 in the morning!

Sooooooooooooo Clsoe I can taste it

also carol nash was the best insurance 454 fully comp legal breakdown etc.. on a 12k trike
and they will fit the Cat 1 Datatool S4, The New DataTag system and a battery optimiser for £350 fitted
I couldnt find anyone who can do that cheaper

That sounds pretty good Yodie.
I couldn't find anyone who'd give me Fully Comp' on mine without VERY limited mileage, engineer's reports, independant valuation etc. I usually run mine on Third Party only for about 150 quid & carry a very big padlock! 12 grand! All the Manky trikes added together wouldn't be worth that much!

The Orange One lives! "Egor, more power!"
Ska Man, Flap & I have spent the afternoon poking & prodding Flap's trike until we eventually coaxed it into life. Sort of. Won't tick over & keeps firing up, running for a few seconds then dying again, plus it's leaking just about every fluid there is to leak -BUT, it does run. Not quite moving under it's own steam yet but we're getting there. Sounds O.K though. None of the expected clunks & knocks.
Mine will be prettier though ;D

Orange Tango can petrol tank doesn't give much range but it's leaking petrol out the carb quicker than we can refill it anyway.
Battery box is compact & bijou -& a bugger to get jump leads onto the battery.

Title: Re: The Orange one.

Hello you.
Yeah, POSSIBLY by the Spring. Time & money are the only obstacles really. We were saying recently we could enter a Club display at the Shepton Mallet show of part built trikes! Got 5 or 6 we could take there. I could produce a Monkey head logo sculpture as a centre piece, sell a few shirts & mugs etc. Maybe.
No, Ace Cafe & Ally Pally show tomorrow, just Rainbow & me. I've chickened out & rented a car for the weekend. Can't really afford it but got a lot of miles to do up & down the motorway & don't fancy doing it on the bike. Fair weather rider? Yup.

Title: Re: The Orange one.

Yeah, thanks for that Flap! >:(
I rent cars every couple of months from "Thrifty Rental". 200 yards from my flat. Costs me 50 quid for a weekend. No, I can't really afford it but just thought To hell with it. Sometimes you need a break don't you. Been stuck in Ska Man's garage building things for months now & just fancied a trip out somewhere. Several other trips to do while I've got 4 wheels so not just for the show.
The scrape? Never done it before but misjudged the width of the car as I pulled into a supermarket carpark & scraped the edge of a wheel arch. Fortunately the previous corporate hirer had put a ruddy great graunch in the rear panel & scraped the front wheel trim so think I can get away with it!
