Title: Very quiet again -what you all up to?
Post by: Manky Monkey on August 05, 2008, 09:23:57 PM
So what are you lot up to then? Been very quiet here today. Taz has buggered off to Wales, then on to Cumbria to compete in more carriage driving events. So I'm home all alone for the week.
Spent all evening tinkering in the shed & only managed to make one little bracket for my trike. You guys had any more luck?

Oi been doing odds & sods as well. I am making up engine mounts for this Beetle lump, but hit a snag as there are no holes to put a plate on for the front one.
On the Swedish Trike Garage site they have a pic of how they do it, which is to bolt a thick plate on behind the alt/timing pully, but the studs they use are only M6 sized, and I am a bit iffy about using them to mount a heavy lump on.
I do have a plan, and will post some pics when I get some more 6mm plate & weld it up.

it will be worth it in the end but that seems a long way away ,im waiting for some alloy yokes to be machined so icant position brackets for rad till i get them im using a mini rad and just hoping i can get it too fit not sure how much bigger than reliant one the mini one is no dought i will make it fit any way more grinding ,waiting for some diamond tipped tools for a dremmel they seem to soon
take down the welds a bit savage i suppose but if they do the job then that is near enough for me

Nearly completed the rack for the back of the Trike made and fitted taller risers (maybe too tall) repaired front brake res.

Weather gettin' me down as usual, as I'm sure it's getting to everyone.

Had a strange request from work today, I have to prove I'm British by showing my Passport, you'd have thought they would have known what nationality I was since I have been there over 8 years and they have copies of my birth certificate and driving licence.
All to do with the new imigration laws, anyone else been asked to prove nationality? what will they do when I refuse to show them my passport?

I'll let you know tomorrow if I'm still employed or not ;D

hey Doug, why do you want to run a front engine mount ?

I had to write a character reference for Flap a few days ago. He's been working as a lorry driver for a year & they've just decided he needs vouching for. Ohh, the power. I'm just a former workmate -why would they accept my word?
The weather's been hot 'n' sticky here all day. Nothing achieved in the shed yet again as after work I went to London to collect some wheel hubs & brakes for my Pop pick-up project. Nice to know you lot are all beavering away though. I don't feel quite so lonely in me shed knowing there's plenty of kindred spirits out there.  ;D

I was inspired to nip out to the shed for half an hour to start on the second of a pair of handbrake cable guides for my trike. Although the shed's at the bottom of a 100 foot long garden, the noise of hacksawing & filing still carries pretty well so I can't work too late -no point in upsetting the neighbours.
Very humid out there. Kept seeing flashes of light in the sky. Maybe lightning on the horizon. Not sure. I think there's a storm a-brewing.
I'm a townie & still not used to this country lifestyle. Walked back up the garden in the dark with an owl twittering in the woods beside me -very spooky when I'm here all alone -Taz is away for a week competing in a horse event in Cumbria.
An owl fact for you- they don't go "Twit Twoo". Males go "Twit" & females reply "Twoo".
                      -Manky, country Monkey.

hey Doug, why do you want to run a front engine mount ?

What I am going to do is put two rubber mounts under an ally plate bolted to the bell housing. (red arrows)

At the front of the beetle lump is a small plate just behind & below the crank pully. Dunno if it covers the oil pump or similar, but it is held on by four M6 studs and 10mm nuts. This is where the Swedes hang their front mounts.
I plan to hang a length of 40mm box off one of the crankcase bolts which is convenient , and brace it with a bit of 25mm box.

Me, i have finally replaced the leaky forks on my Silverwing trike, having overhauled them in the Spring. I also changed to a single disc front, the disc I made fro a piece of EN8( I think!), and had to make a fork brace out of Alloy, still, all was going swimmingly, until the N/S rear mudguard fell off when the support brackets broke, looks to be vibration fractures, so nowt new there then! All this is delaying somewhat the start on my next trike, based on a very tidy 750 Virago. Still I have been acruing 'bits', i.e the Golf rear brake bits to carry out one of the now famous(infamous!), Manky rear disc conversions on the Plastic Pig axle I have also acquired, so there you go, other than that theres the bits for my brothers dingy, the washing and ironing! and......, yeah, right, ttfn, Morrag

Been tied up with family stuff, missed a bikers wedding I was going to in Wales last weekend, and won't be getting to the Calstock rally this coming weekend either - and cos of not getting to either of those, bang goes my chance of a Silver award in the RBR this year too.

We've got the opposite problem -done too many shows & not enough time in the shed, so it's already August & nothing's finished.  :(

We always say, this winter I'll do the work - but it's cold and wet so we don't!  Maybe next year you should have a stay-at-home year and get all the vehicles sorted!

Let's have a look then!
I've made a start on Taz's trike frame -mainly cos it's in the shed & I'm fed up with falling over it. We started it back in May, but haven't had time to get back to it since. The headstock was tacked on crooked & the gearbox mounts weren't central, so this evening I've sorted them both.
