Title: Basingstoke Festival of transport 10th May 2009
Post by: tazet on August 01, 2008, 06:00:53 AM
I know I'm early posting this but just came across the date for this one. This year, (2008), was a huge success with our little website stand and hopefully we will have something working for this, (2009), one. I'm not sure as always if work will overlap with this but I hope not as it's a great event, rain or shine. I will sticky it for now or it will end up lost a million pages back.

You 'n' me both mate!
We managed to rustle up 24 vehicles for this show in 2008. Hoping to improve on that for '09 so get building folks!

Just opened the post & found the entry form for the 2009 Basingstoke show.
The official closing date for entries is the 1st of April '09, (although late entries may be accepted at the organisers' discretion, but won't appear in the programme). So we need to start compiling a list people.
This show's becoming a bit of an unofficial forum get-together so would be great to see as many of you there as possible.
Who's up for it then?

Hope so Doc. You were one of the first there last year as I recall.
Better start pushing this one & drawing up a list then. 24 vehicles on our pitch last year. Can we beat that this year?

No camping -it's a one day event, from 11am to around 5pm. A good mixture of classic cars, bikes, trucks, military, custom etc, etc -& us.  ;D

We've only got a couple of weeks till this show guys & space will be limited. It was a bit of a squeeze last year & there's no guarantee we'll get the same size pitch or even the same spot on the show field this year. So if you fancy coming along, put your name & vehicle down as soon as poss please.
Those that were there last year know there's nothing organised about it -just arrive, park up & enjoy the day. Unfinished projects are very welcome -we'll certainly have a few of our own, but obviously you'll need to sort out your own transportation for them. We've found from previous shows that the general public are fascinated by the "behind the scenes" bit of project builds. They don't usually get to see the bare metal, bare bones jobs, just the shiny finished vehicles.
If we have time & you give us the info, we'll run off some laminated cards, giving owner's name, vehicle description, points of interest etc.
Anyone fancy a day in the park?

Good question, Does it have to be vehicles? we seem to have a full quota of trikes at various stages.......
So i was thinking about bringing down the reliant engine and box, mounted in a steel frame, hopefully working, if i pull my finger out, sort of stationary engine.

That sounds like a good idea. How about supplimenting it with a copy of your thread of the top end strip down/rebuild (I know this would be teaching how to suck eggs to most people there, but it would provide an insight for the beginner).
Just my thoughts but as a novice I would find it fasinating (if I hadn't already read it ;D )

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of transport 10th May 2009
Post by: Manky Monkey on April 29, 2009, 07:42:17 PM
Great idea TB. How about mounting it on a plinth of some sort? A stand, a few feet off the ground, bolted to the engine & gearbox mounts. Obviously health & safety's a big issue with the general public wandering about -can't afford to have some nosey kid sticking his fingers in the fan belt. So it'd need a guard over any moving parts or a barrier to keep Joe Public out of arm's reach.
Could look very cool with the aluminium nicely polished.  8)

Post by: tazet on April 29, 2009, 07:59:56 PM
As these 2 have said it sounds like a good idea but we will have to put a barrier up around it. Same with Daves car we'll have to have a zone around the car void of public and puppies when he starts it up.

Polish it ???? gotta get it running first  ;D. I`ll know for sure by mid week if my shift swap request has happened or not so will let you know when i know. Yep, i thought of a frame around 3 feet tall, tall enough to see, but not to tall. I have access to some of those metal crowd barriers, the low ones, so if it goes to plan, i`ll bring 4 with me to box it in. Gotta keep the health n safety executive happy  ;). Am working the next few days so time will be against me,we`ll see.

LOL...puppies  ;D

Yes a lady with her puppy walked right past the exhausts of the original Black Pig just as Steve started it. I spotted it but half a second too late and just as I shouted stop it was too late the car fired up and the poor puppy was absolutley petrified. It was no ones fault but I still picture it and feel for the poor little thing. I know Dave still thinks about it too and we do not want a repeat of that this year so a barrier and firing up times will be displayed.

Post by: Manky Monkey on April 29, 2009, 10:53:41 PM
Alright TB, if not polished, how about painting the rocker cover a funky colour, (Halfords do a range of marble & metalflake aerosol paints for push bikes), or knocking up a crazy twisty exhaust or something? Have a word with Lunatic -he bought Toad's old trike project, which came with a part finished supercharger set-up.
Huge crash barriers might be a bit over the top, but Taz uses white tapes to divide up her fields at work so they can put several groups of horses in one field. Something like that would probably be enough -especially if she borrows the electrified ones!  :P

It's big n black & gorgeous. Also 2 of Jacko's mates are bringing along their trikes, A Chevy V8 & a VW respectively. Sorry, didn't catch their names.
Can you guys who are question marked please contact us & confirm whether you're joining us please.

That's great Clive! Well done. Bet you're chuffed! Just in time for the glorious heatwave Summer I'm told we're going to get.  8)
Triker Pete posted this link to the Memorial Park in Basingstoke where the show's taking place.

Basingstoke War Memorial Park

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=War+Memorial+Park,+Basingstoke&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&split=0&ei=g4r8SZ_ND5LMjAeU7NyZAw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1

We can send you a photo copied map if you need one, (PM us your address). Not sure what time the organisers will be onsite, but we're aiming to be there by around 8.o.clock on Sunday morning. We've got some running about to do, trailering a couple of vehicles from various places, but someone should be there. Nobody's ever kept a check on who comes & goes before but this year they're asking that every vehicle on the show field has a vehicle pass -just a photo copied ticket. We've been issued with 20. It's a council health & safety thing apparently. If we had more than 20 vehicles on the day we could re-use the tickets -who's going to check? The 3 we're bringing along are all unfinished, unregistered projects, so if we had to we could argue they don't need vehicle passes. It's not normally that official -it's run by genuine vehicle enthusiasts so I'm sure they'll turn a blind eye if necessary.
Between now & the end of the week we'll PM or email everyone our mobile numbers so just give us a ring when you arrive & someone will nip up to the gate with a ticket for you.
It's no big deal -just turn up, park up & enjoy the day. All show vehicles need to be onsite by 10.30am at the latest ready for the 11.o.clock opening. Officially the show runs till 5pm.

All those bringing a vehicle to the show, if you can email us a basic spec' sheet, (don't need an essay -James- just the basics & any points of interest etc), we'll Taz, will weave an A4 laminated card for you.

Clive's is now sorted too just got to print and laminate them.

Had an email from one of Perry's mates asking if he can bring his 59 Buick. We said yes and at least Perry can turn up in that if he can't get his car finished. Perry if you read this please don't rush your car just to get it done for this as we'd hate for something else to go wrong on such a lovely car.

We could probably find a plug socket to plug a laminator into, but might not go down too well if the tannoy system suddenly goes dead cos we've unplugged it!

;D I don't know where these shows find their announcers. Maybe they all use the same guy, but some of them are odd to say the least.  :) Mind you, I wouldn't fancy having to sit there for 6 hours, talking about buses & lorries & trikes n stuff. The address for those with sat nav is

War Memorial Park,
Crossborough Hill,
London Road
RG21 4AH
(1/2 mile from junction 6 on the M3)

There are road signs up so you should be able to pick up and follow those with no problems. When you turn up the road going to the entrance of the park is the best time to call either Manky or myself and one of us will see you at the gates. If you don't have our number/s then PM one of us and we'll give it to you.

Safe journies to everyone. Looking forward to seeing you all.   ;D

You're more than welcome guys and gals! A huge thank you to all those that came. Without you lot we wouldn't have had such a great day. It was YOU that made the stand what it was. Also it was great that some forum members who didn't have a vehicle still came over and squatted with us for the day. We've literally just got in from returning the hire van and only just sat down to our computers. We're thoroughly shattered and glad the day went so well. It was also good to meet some new forum faces and have a chat. My brain has completley collapsed along with my back and feet so will be going to sleep very shortly I think. Thank you again to all of you.  ;D :-*

Our pleasure  ;)
I've had a couple of days of just 2 or 3 hours sleep a night & today was my first day back at work after a week off, so I fell asleep on the sofa when I got home this afternoon! It's my age you know. Woke up mid evening when Taz came home from work & I'm still a bit woozy, so apologies for not posting more today.
I promise we'll sort out a write-up for this event, plus the recent MonkeyWorld run, in the next few days. If you were at the Basingstoke show & have any photos you'd like to share with us, bung 'em on a disc & post them, (PM us for the address), or email them if you only have a few. We'll make up photo galleries for them all. Also, why not jot down your take on the day. Just a few sentences, or a 3 page essay. Up to you. Did you enjoy the show? Had you been before? Any problems or constructive criticisms for the organisers -or us? What was your favourite show vehicle? (I quite fancy one of the 30 ton Antar tank transporters myself). Will you be back next year? How was your journey there & back? Are you as sunburnt as I am? We'll add any we receive to the photos.

Definitely not planning on doing any work in the shed for the next couple of days. Lots to catch up on here, plus Taz & I need some time to recover! Normal service will be resumed soon though, promise. Got to push on & get all our projects finished ready for next year's show!
I spoke to one of the organisers today & he reckoned there were 100 trade stalls, 1,000 vehicles & around 20,000 visitors -& all for free. Certainly lots of people there, but that sounds a very high figure. I'll grab the local paper when it comes out on Thursday & see what they say.

Hi All,

It was a lovely day and it was great to see so many vehicles in the Manky section - maybe my trike will be there next year.  It was nice meeting owners of names I have seen on the site and thanks to all those brains I picked!

I really enjoyed looking at the lorries and trucks and I think I am with you Andy, those Antars were something else.  There were lots of interesting stalls as well which was fun - I am now the proud owner of some skull braces.

My arms (and other sensitive bits) are bright red so from now on (even if it is raining) I must wear sun tan lotion.  I am going to Tunisia in July so if British May sun is anything to go by I will be looking like a lobster even with sun cream in July.  We had a nice picnic by Chevy Rick's Nadine - got to think about what we are going to eat next weekend at Hayling now though.  Really looking forward to that as I have never been there.  Hope the weather is as good.

Looking forward to seeing all the photos posted for Basingstoke, JayJay  :)

No problem Mr Forest. PM me your address & I'll get one in the post to you.
Nice to see you too JJ  :) Sorry to interrupt your picnic lunch with Rick on Sunday. :) You guys make a nice couple -we don't get many lady trikists here! Know what you mean about the sunburn. The back of my neck was definitely a bit stingy on Monday morning. I'm a typical British tourist -never go brown, just different shades of red.  :(
I'll be at the Hayling Island rod run on Sunday, possibly with Lunatic in tow cos Taz will be working. I believe Dave & Janie are going too.

She brought the trophy over to gloat show it off, then turned camera shy & wouldn't let Taz photograph her with the cup. Maybe we need a theme for next year.
I wanted to create a metal Monkey sculpture of some sort, maybe built from old car & bike parts, but just ran out of time. Maybe we need to start preparing now.  :)

Hmm, i`d ask for a recount!
With my completely unbiased head on, i still maintain that the triple M stand was the best, as Ali has just said, with the others, people were just drifting past looking at the vehicles, we didnt see anyone stop and actualy interact with the exhibitors, who from what i saw were burried in the centre of their displays, seemingly unapproachable.
Maybe the organisers look for different things when judging the best stand, and our opinion is, if you want rows of highly polished vehicles that no one is allowed to touch, then give the award to them, If you want a stand that drew the crowds and offered a variety of interesting vehicles, allowed total interaction, aways had someone on hand to chat to and answer questions, allowed photo opertunities..........
Sorry about that, what do i know? i only went along as part of the non paying british public

I agree with you. Would be interesting to know how it is judged.

I reckon you might be ever so slightly biased TB!
I didn't think we were working particularly hard at courting the punters, just being ourselves, but when you looked at the other clubs you're right. Most were enjoying the day as a club get-together for their members, with the general public as an added extra. We were there to meet the visitors & grab a few minutes to chat to each other when we could -different approach.
Seriously, maybe we can build on our success to come up with a bigger, brighter display for next year. I'm thinkng maybe a couple of trikes raised a foot or two off the ground on stands so people can get a good view all around them, properly presented information boards for each vehicle, with a couple of build photos etc, information on building a trike & registering it for the road, more information on the drag cars with links to associated race organisations, a list of dates & venues where the cars can be seen in action, a similar list of cruise dates & venues where punters can get involved in the custom car scene. More info on display answering some of the more commonly asked questions. Maybe a small merchandise area, selling T shirts & stickers? If we wanted to, we could make a real splash at that show -more so than we already have. Or do we prefer to keep it on a more informal, turn up & enjoy a laid back day sort of level? Have a think about it. Some feedback on just what you guys would like would be useful. No reason why we couldn't do other shows, but we just seem to have adopted that one as our event.
One thing that did niggle me all day was those bloomin' MMMotors banners. They were hung on lightweight plastic poles, (actually plumbing fittings), with short pegs holding them in the ground. They got knocked over, blown over by the wind etc all day. With help from Simple Simon & Scottie I repaired them several times. So next year I'm determined to create something more substantial. I was thinking life sized monkeys, built from scrap car parts, dressed in MMMotors T shirts, holding the banners. Wouldn't want to block the view of anyone's vehicles though so maybe they'd have to be squatting down. -well why not?!   ;D

Might be worth one year of all out monkey madness just to see the difference.

Yup, safely arrived Pete. We'll get them sorted this evening.
Checked the local paper today. The Basingstoke Gazette. Not a single photo of us lot in there of course.
They confirm visitor attendance as "more than 20,000 people". The organisers are quoted as saying "we had to stop accepting applications to exhibit at 1,257 because we were just overwhelmed with the response".
The Gazette's photos can be viewed & bought at www.basingstokegazette.co.uk/photosales
