Lucky git, you can eat rats and they do taste like chicken, but be warned, be VERY,VERY careful when you 'prep' them ;D

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: klogan45 on December 07, 2007, 12:37:30 PM
And Hedgehogs!!!! Yum Yum Yum!!! ;D Really tasty ;D ;D

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: blair on December 07, 2007, 02:19:26 PM
these rats would feed a famill of six , its got something to do with the de icing fluid they use on the runway that behind the work shop . as for hedgehogs i dont know how you would prep one of them without getting a little prick !

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: klogan45 on December 07, 2007, 05:11:43 PM
you don't have to have a little prick but some people that prep them do HAVE a little prick :o
You gut them and wrap them in clay ( heavy mud )and bake them on the embers of a fire, when cooked you break off the clay and the pricks and skin come off. No pricks there then. ;D

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: blair on December 07, 2007, 05:18:11 PM

used to work with a traveller type gentleman who used to eat various "woodland" meals like Rookes breast, Squirrel and hedge pig, in fact old spikey actually tasted rather nice :-[ :-[ he also brewed/distilled a rather potent moonshin :o :o a thimble full took my legs away for over 4 hours ::) ::) ::) :-\

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: klogan45 on December 08, 2007, 12:36:56 PM
There's a lot to be said for 'woodland fare'. No additives, fresh, nutritious and best of all free ;D ;D
Squirrel is sold in some 'top class' restaurants as flightless partridge or tree rabbit, how pretentious!!!
What about Dorset Wall Fruit, or snails as us commoners call them, Yum Yum Yum ;D ;D But please remember if you're going to try them don't eat, kill or harm the 'Romans' as they are quite rare these days, that's the really big ones, they were imported by the, can you guess? Romans... as a delicacy :o and were abundant at one time, but now in decline. :( :(
What about edible dormice, upto £80 a pair in a restaurant :o, the last that I was aware, probably even more now :o Again an import, they're big ...for mice. ;D ;D
Lay off the monkies though ;D ;D ;D
 :-*

Title: Re: Projects on the go

"Tree rabbit" -I like that  ;D
Wouldn't get much more than a sandwich out of a doormouse would you?
Tazet's cooking lunch for a shooting party here on the estate at the moment. They've had 5 drives this morning & got another after lunch so should be a little less wildlife on the estate now. No idea what they're shooting but I'm guessing it's not tree rabbit or doormouse.

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: klogan45 on December 08, 2007, 12:54:30 PM
You're right there Andy, not much food and paying high prices for it, its all a big con for those that have more money than sense and 'wannabee's'
the drive was probably some poor flying things that've been specially reared for the 'guns' not much of a life that eh, good eating though ;D ;D, Have been on a few 'shoots' meself but not a good shot, only got a few :-[ :-[
I thought that the peasants were flying a bit low, then someone pointed out my error :-[ :-[
would'nt like to eat a fox, smelly enough when they're alive!! We go to shaldon from time to time and collect mussels, cockles and clams, fresh and yummy!! ;D The water there now is clean, since all of the work was completed a couple of years ago.
For any vegetarians what about seaweed, some of it is really delicious, but be careful that the water is clean, none of that blue/green algae not good for you that's not.
Fish too, mackerel, oily and free but getting less and less every year down here, still about but fewer around. Plenty of dogfish, thats lovely, no bones, but a bit ugly looking. Plenty of those around!!!

I'm still a bit of a fish out of water here at the moment -a townie who's suddenly wound up in the country. Not used to mousetraps in the kitchen & mud everywhere, but it's great to come back here after a day trudging the streets of Basingstoke delivering the mail. No litter or graffiti or foul mouthed yobs, just peace & quiet & fresh air. Luvverly.

Title: Re: Projects on the go

And lots of free food ;D ;D

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: Manky Monkey on December 08, 2007, 01:13:53 PM
:) I'm not used to real food, that doesn't come out of a packet from Sainsburys.
I thought sausages grew that shape. I'm gonna plant a Jaffa Cake tree in the garden as soon as I can find some seeds.

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: klogan45 on December 08, 2007, 01:20:00 PM
Who mentioned real food, I said Free, there's a lot of difference, good luck with the jaffa cake plant, I had one but it died a few years ago, shame that, Try 'jaffacakeeus orageosii' It's apparently winter hardy, thats why you can get jaffa cakes all year, you will have to find a 'grower' and get some cuttings as the seeds, which you eat, they come in the packets from places like tesco etc are F1 hybrids, if you plant the jaffa cake seed from the packet the fruit, if any is shrivelled and very very bitter. I have tried to raiese them from seeds bought from Tesco on many occasions, they always look promising, but never turn out right. :-[

I tried chicken farming a few years ago, very very unsuccessful, I ran out of money and had to declare meself bankrupt, it appears that I was planting the chickens upside down.
We live and learn!!

Finally managing to catch up with everything. I'm glad you are back K it was so quiet without you around. The shoot Manky said about a few pages back was a Pheasant shoot and after dinner they did a Duck drive. The food was Steak and kidney pud with veggies. We have lots of tree rabbits here but never heard them being called that and never tried to eat them either. As far as the Jaffa tree goes, no comment  ::).

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: Firery Fred on December 12, 2007, 07:36:09 PM
We just call them tree rats up here, hate the bloody things cos they chase our reds away

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: klogan45 on December 12, 2007, 09:15:59 PM
Wot you don't believe in the Jaffa tree. Its the same rule as for santa, no belief, no prezzies. No belief in jaffa tree (It's actually a bush, indiginous to the sub tropics!!!!) no jaffa cakes for you my girl :o :o :o
So a duck drive eh!!!! Amphibious vehicle shooting ;D
Phartridges and peasants :o :o
Squirell is very nice but you have to be careful about contamination with insecticides and stuff.
With rat you have to be very careful when you paunch them, if you cut/nick the intestines you should'nt eat the meat because of bacteria in the intestines, hedgehog is much nicer and easier.

Post by: blair on December 12, 2007, 09:42:49 PM
we have already been over the hedge hog ( as have many people )   earlier in the thread . but we never got onto the subject of armadillo , they are crunchy on the outside and smooth on the inside unlike ginger cats

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: tazet on December 12, 2007, 10:46:20 PM
That's ok K I don't like Jaffa cakes anyway. Manky has them all to himself.

Bummer that saying was off the Dime bar advert many years ago and I think it was "chewy on the inside" instead of "smooth". I'm always quoting that advert and the kids at the yard think I'm nuts but only cos they are too young to remember it. Makes me chuckle though.  ;D

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: blair on December 13, 2007, 09:12:27 AM
;D you are probably indeed correct tazet , i am of course to young to remember the advert myself  ;) . we had a guy up here who loved jaffa cakes and iron bru and when he built a street fighter gsx he painted it in iron bru colours as he said jaffa cakes were just to so cakey   8)

Title: Re: Projects on the go
Post by: klogan45 on December 13, 2007, 12:21:05 PM
Dead right Tazet, showing your age ;D or was the advert repeated recently? :-*

Showing my age unfortunately. Not seen that advert in years. Just one of those catchphrases that sticks in your head.

What about......
It's all you have to do.....do the shake and vac and put the freshness back, do the shake and vac and put the freshness back, when your carpet smells fresh you room does too,
every time you vacuum just remember what to do, do the shake and vac and put the freshness back. etc
You'll all hate me now because that is going to stick in your mind......if you're old enough to remember it ;D

You know if you say you don't believe in fairy's, Tazet, that a fairy dies, well its the same with jaffacake bushes, everytime you say you don't like jaffacakes a fairy dies. How's that for emotional blackmail.

What about the Heinz advert with the 2 boys reciting a poem, we mucked the words about a bit.......
we're gonna have a gangbang my brother jon and me,
we know this girl with great big t@@s that does a turn for free,
first we'll take of her blouse and then her bra and Jeans,
then we're gonna take her home and give her Heinz baked beans.
We're not really..we going to s@@@ her, but we could'nt make it rhyme :-[
