Title: Blue Tongue disease.
Post by: Manky Monkey on September 23, 2007, 08:12:06 AM
No, not the result of eating too many Smarties, but yet another animal disease that's come to light.
I'm not very clued up on all this stuff, but with my, (hopefully), imminent move to the Surrey countryside with Tazet, it all becomes more relevant. An exclusion zone encompassing the estate she works on would stop them moving any horses or could lead to their sheep being culled.

"Further bluetongue tests at farm

Bluetongue is transmitted by the Culicoides imicola midge

Further tests are being carried out at a Suffolk farm to determine whether any more animals have been affected by the UK's first case of bluetongue disease.
The insect-borne virus, which has killed livestock across Europe, was in a Highland cow on what is thought to be a rare breeds farm near Ipswich.
Farmers say the arrival of the disease is devastating for an industry already struggling with foot-and-mouth.
Sheep, cattle, goats and deer can be infected, but humans are not at risk.
The disease is not contagious but often leads to death in sheep.
Animals with it experience discomfort, with flu-like symptoms, and swelling and haemorrhaging in and around the mouth and nose.
They can also go lame and have difficulty eating properly."

Saw it on the news last night for the first time, oh horrendous it was.  My heart went out to the animals that were effected.  Open wounds at the knee joints, appalling, bless their hearts.

Really? Wonder if that'll affect Tazet's estate near Guildford? Are there suddenly more cases of these things or are the farmers & authorities just getting more vigilant at finding them?

Tazzie's driving a lorryful of ponies home from the Midlands at the moment, where she's been competing in the final carriage driving event of the season. It was supposed to be at Windsor last weekend but got postponed & moved due to Foot & Mouth. I've texted her the news.
