Title: pipe bending Post by: paulhenwood on September 18, 2007, 02:11:46 PM Hi, i am a new member who is having great difficulty bending 1 inch pipe for my trike. my tube bender looks very similar to the one that you use. my bender puts a kink in the pipe as it is trying to bend it. Can you tell me if you had similar problems. I am not sure why, it gives me the impression that the bender is at fault but it is not very old. I don't want to buy another bender only to get the same trouble.
Thank you, Paul Title: Re: pipe bending Post by: mouse on September 18, 2007, 04:11:48 PM hey up m8
if the pipe your bending is thin walled and the bender is of the hydraulic type then you ain't gonna have much luck in my past experience when ever Ive tried to bend thin wall tube/pipe it kinks :( i hope somebody can come up with a way of doing it for you m8 Title: Re: pipe bending Post by: lunatic on September 18, 2007, 04:20:37 PM Try filling it with sand, then capping the ends. Or you could try one of those spring things that plumbers stick up the pipe to stop it crushing when they bend it, if you can find one the right size. Last resort is to find one of the boy racer exhaust places that do one offs. They generally have some expensive looking bending equipment.
Hope that helps a bit. Title: Re: pipe bending Post by: klogan45 on September 18, 2007, 04:39:18 PM Hi Paul, I had a bit of the same trouble when I started.
I found that if the pipe/tube is not an exact fit it creased. I took the collar that I wanted to use to the metal suppliers and got some steel pipe that was a good tight fit, then had no problems. I believe that the size stamped on the collar is for pipe not tube. One of them is measured externally the other is the internal size. I think that pipe is measured internally. Hope that this helps mate, Regards Keith Title: Re: pipe bending Post by: Manky Monkey on September 18, 2007, 07:26:59 PM Hiya Paul. Welcome to the forum. ;)
We had a natter about this a little while ago. See if this thread helps at all: http://www.mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1677.0 Title: Re: pipe bending Post by: trikerpete on September 18, 2007, 09:54:47 PM one thing i do is to use a "half pipe cup" of the next size up to fit over the pipe im bending at the points of contact with the rollers, each side of the former. this helps eliminate creases on tighter bends.
hope this helps :) |
