Title: 1954 Royal Enfield
Post by: Plainy Janie on July 31, 2007, 09:36:19 PM
Just been offered a royal enfield 250cc, through one of Daves friends, apparently he committed to buying it at the weekend when he was drunk.  Been round to see it this evening, it seems to be all there, apart from a magneto.  But of all the colours it could have been, turns out to be purple and chrome.  PURPLE I ASK YOU, yuck!

Not sure if its a bullet or crusader.  Need to do some research. Will keep you posted.

Its arrived!!! Oh but the colour, I do hate purple.  Can't pick and choose I suppose, not for 150 quid.  There is a plus side to it though, it has ace bars!!! I could turn it into my much longed for cafe racer after all.  ;D  I need to change it to black and chrome first.

Yep, I knew about your "NEW" Enfield, I have to say I like the colour and I may have a mate who has bits of those in his barn, I will ask tomorrow.

Hi Janie looking through my Royal Enfield book by Roy Bacon your bike appears to be a Crusader with that slanting back exhaust pipe the clipper has a curved exhaust coming away from the barrel.

Your engine with an alloy head first came into service in 1959 with out having a closer look i would say age between 1959...... 1961 ??? ;D

Thanks PantherShaun for anything you can get hold of.

We're not sure yet and won't find out til next Thursday, but there was mention of paperwork and bits to follow.  When Daves friend popped round to collect the bike Wednesday evening, the guy he was buying it off, was out, so his wife said take the bike and if theres anything to follow we'll call you.

Popped down to the enfield dealers in Ripley yesterday afternoon, armed with a  photocopy of the pictures I'd taken and after considerable consultation with the guys there, they believe it could be dated between 1958 - 1962, something to do with the loop of the frame between the rear mudguard and the seat?  So you were close Rick.  They have also suggested it is a Crusader Sports as the handlebars would have come with the bike, when it left the factory.  Cafe racer here we come! (Tries not to get too excited!)

Janie, I have a 1950's ladies waterproof outfit that was given to me cos I always intended to get an old Brit bike - was going to put it on Ebay but I'll take some pix and let you have a look first.

Prolly be too big for you but it was always a bit small for me and I'm bigger now!  Just found it in the loft, it would look great with the Royal Enfield!

Ooh ta BG, sounds interesting.  I have the tootles white silk scarf, and the rough  woollen sea socks to go over my engineers boots.  Can't quite commit myself to wearing a pudding basin helmet yet, but I'm always looking at them.  (And trying them on!)

Ooops sorry to raise interest - I just tried them on and they fit me so I reckon they'd be far too big for you!
They're in really good nick, and carry the famous name......

I forgot to do the belt up when I modelled it, looks really smart with the belt!

Thanks Critch.  Can't wait to get it on the road.  I just hope its not going to be too tall for me.  I spent an hour and a half last year in the dealers trying to convince myself that I could handle a cafe racer, but being only 5ft nothing, I was 4 inches too short and couldn't touch the ground.  Don't suppose I'm likely to grow any taller at the age of 38  :(
