Title: V5 DOCUMENT QUERY
Post by: triker9999 on June 03, 2007, 07:35:43 PM
hi guys n gals

looking to pick your brains on this one.

i am looking at buying a reliant trike as i have had no luck finding somewhere to build one!

found one today, looks pretty good for the money, HOWEVER, V5 document reads RELIANT RIALTO.

is this gonna give me any hassle when taxing, MOTing, insuring ?? ?? ??

thanks in advance for your help guys

mark

As long as it doesn't state a body type, ie, van or saloon, but just says Reliant Rialto motor-tricycle you should be O.K
They're starting to crack down on the guys running huge V8 trikes on paperwork that says they're Reliant Robin vans, that sort of thing. Eventually they'll refuse to MOT it & report you to DVLA if you present a logbook that doesn't describe it as what they see in front of them. Makes sense really.

It does I think as the changes to the body type were not notified to the DVLA. If your lucky it will get passed the MOT but each year it could get picked up! Then you get a referal to the DVLA and an MSVA  ::)

Also insurance may be an issue!

Thanks ByzMax,the guy at our local mot station chuckled when it came back as a saloon last year but did it anyway. Our insurance co. know what it looks like, they have photos. What now?

Why not just put it through the MSVA?

There are plans afoot to ensure that all MOT stations refer any vehicle that does not match the log book to the DVLA.

If you get picked up then the MSVA is not that hard to get through but I would need to see a photo to get some idea of what changes might be required.

The main question you should consider is...... If it was built before the MSVA came in (2003) might be 2004 for Trikes, then consider why it was not presented to the DVLA for a change of details? Suspect build quality?

How much have you got to spend and what sort of machine are you after.

How many seats? Hard or softtail?

If you are gonna trust your life to this machine then you need to know as much about it and the builder as possible!
