Title: MX5?
Post by: Manky Monkey on December 30, 2017, 02:57:29 PM
One of my customers had this parked on his drive this morning. I know he's into kit cars but he wasn't around to ask.
Is it a naked MX5? Definitely a Mazda engine. Interesting single spine chassis design with the propshaft running inside the 3 sided channel that formed the spine.

So not monocoque then?
I'll try & find out what he plans to build from it.

Yes, monocoque. Just 'cos it has a spine, does not mean it's like an elan. If you look at your pictures you will see that there are two subframes, one front and back( bit like a mini or 1100 really). They introduced the Mk1 in '89, don't think there was anybody making chassised sports cars apart from Morgan then.

I'm curious to see what he does with it now :)

The girder like section is called the power plant frame and is bolted to the gearbox and the differential.

Aah, of course -because it's IRS. I was trying to figure out how the axle moved, but of course, the diff' doesn't.
So does the bodyshell lift off in one piece then?

Yep but the springs/shocks mount to the body in a similar way to MacPherson struts.
Does make the power plant and drive train very suitable for mounting on a simple ladder chassis.
Body rust is the big problem with MX5's but there are a lot of kits out there. From Ferrari lookalikes to Ariel Atom like type cars.

The guy I bought my replacement Rover V8 from had rebuilt it to put into an Atom style kit, then changed his mind & went for an MX5 motor instead.
