If you look at your pictures you will see that there are two subframes, one front and back( bit like a mini or 1100 really). They introduced the Mk1 in '89, don't think there was anybody making chassised sports cars apart from Morgan then.

So does the bodyshell lift off in one piece then? Yep but the springs/shocks mount to the body in a similar way to MacPherson struts. Does make the power plant and drive train very suitable for mounting on a simple ladder chassis. Body rust is the big problem with MX5's but there are a lot of kits out there.
