Title: David Bowie Dead
Post by: JayJay on January 11, 2016, 08:40:40 AM
Cannot believe it. I watched his Blackstar video yesterday and didn't think he looked well but thought it was makeup for the part he played.

Turns out he has had cancer for 18 months. A major loss but a major gain for Mick Ronson. May they play together for evermore.

69 years old. Ironic that he should go when our British astronaut, Major Tim, is up there, sitting in a tin can.

I liked this.....

Quote
Actor Simon Pegg wrote this and I couldn't have said it better if I tried

"If you're sad today, just remember the world is over 4 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie."

Think about it.

Hadn't seen that quote. Very good, very thoughtful.

I am sad today and have been quite tearful. It might be because my cold has come back but it might also be because I have loved David Bowie and his music since I was 12 and I am 56 next month. Okay, I haven't loved everything he has done  :) but each album or single links me to a time in my life, good and bad, and to people I have met along the way. I have been thinking especially of one girlfriend I had, who I have lost touch with, and we regularly looked like the bully in Coppersmith's picture. We were always so smitten by David and his music and today I just wanted to speak to her because I knew she would understand how I felt.

Another memory is getting a fellow Bowie fan, a boy whom I had gone to school with, to go with me to Birmingham to catch David at an Iggy Pop concert as I had heard a rumour he was turning up to be in Iggy's band. Well just as we were walking to the venue we saw a small crowd and there was Bowie a few feet away happily chatting. We soon joined that crowd. It was a good concert too.

So yes, it might be my cold, but it also might be because I have lost someone who has always accompanied me as I have traversed the last 44 years.

I've always liked Bowie - and he was always just 'there' - but my daughjter's a big fan and got everything he's ever done.  Made me blub when she posted that she and Mike played this to their newborn children while bringing them home from hospital....

"Kooks"

[CHORUS ]
Will you stay in our Lovers' Story
If you stay you won't be sorry
'Cause we believe in you
Soon you'll grow so take a chance
With a couple of Kooks
Hung up on romancing

We bought a lot of things
to keep you warm and dry
And a funny old crib on which the paint won't dry
I bought you a pair of shoes
A trumpet you can blow
And a book of rules
On what to say to people
when they pick on you
'Cause if you stay with us you're gonna be pretty Kookie too

[CHORUS]

And if you ever have to go to school
Remember how they messed up
this old fool
Don't pick fights with the bullies
or the cads
'Cause I'm not much cop at punching other people's Dads
And if the homework brings you down
Then we'll throw it on the fire
And take the car downtown

Written for Zowie Bowie or Duncan, as he is known as now and a track on the Hunky Dory album. All great verses but I always liked the last one. Always made me smile. :D

I'm like your Daughter, BG, I have practically all of his albums even one that a lot of people ignore and that is 'David Bowie' which was released in 1979. Some great songs on there like 'Uncle Arthur' and 'She's Got Medals'. We are hearing Space Oddity being played so many times on the news and it makes you remember how rich the sound is and that was recorded in 1969. That whole album is brilliant though. I often sing 'An Occasional Dream' to myself.  The only track I had problems with was 'God Knows I’m Good' because it reminded me everytime that I had been caught shoplifting when I was 11 years old. Guilt or what. :-\

Anyway, I will shut up now but I'm sure Bowie's music will always be heard playing somewhere around the world or even in space again!  8)
