I was surfing last night, and came across this old post about fitting a Guzzi gearbox to the back of a piggy engine. Did anything come of it?

 Though technically possible, (it's been done) for a trike you lose reverse (one of the reasons for using the Reliant engine) and there are not a huge number of folk building Reliant engined bikes.
I started thinking about converting the Reliant gearbox to foot change, but the 'vintage' tank mounted gearchange worked, so I lost interest.

I still have the drawings somewhere but it involves a large casting to be made I did try to make a fabricated version with "Pointy helmet" some years ago but not heard anything for quite a while and I don't think he's on here anymore.

It is possible as Voyagers (the Feet forward monsters) have it fitted.

Ive toyed with putting a bmw gearbox behind a v6, for the bike change. The issue is, as Olds said, you lose reverse, and engineering one in is costly or a hassle.

Ural gearboxes are available with reverse. Always some on ebay. A bit agricultural but as long as you dont try to put too much power through them they should be ok (not a V6  ;) ).

I was going to go the Ural route a few years back, but never did. The reason I was asking was that when going through old posts, it annoys me when they stop dead and you don't know what happened. OCD I suppose.

I've always thought a Ural box on a Reliant engine would be a really interesting build, (there's a local bike & sidecar fitted with one). That'd give you reverse, foot gearchange & a kickstart.

Yeah but a reliant engine is a bit plodding, and doesnt take too well to being pushed hard - just from observation, not experience here, so feel free to shoot me down.
Now, put a modern , alloy 16v, 1.4 ish in there, and you could be on to something - reliant shape, bike change, reverse, and some oomph thrown in...

I think it all depends what you want to do on your trike.  My bike trike is quite quick, and when I bought a mini 1000 trike I hated it because it was slow and had not much acceleration.  But then I wanted to travel and use my tike the way I used it when it was a bike - and I'm probably unusual in that.

In the 60s Ed Roth aka Von Dutch made the XAVW that was an Harley XA (Wartime BMW copy) with an bugmotor in a motorcykleframe and a Honda 450 tank. So since the Ural and Dnepr is BMW copys that should possible to use the gearbox as long that the motor of choice don't have to much horsepower and there is enough room to adapt them to each other.

On some of the Russian sites there are bikes with ZaZ v4 car engines, and Ural/dnepr boxes. Dunno what hp the ZaZ lumps produce.

At wikipedia they say from 30hp to 40 hp after what model it's from
