Title: Tig help please.
Post by: melosman on November 08, 2015, 11:36:51 AM
Thinking of taking the plunge and buying a tig welder as do a little bit of buying and selling and do a fair bit of welding and the old mig is getting a bit tired. Can you weld upside with one? What gas is needed? Are the amperage ratings the same as a mig or will I need a higher/lower amperage? Some times need to weld 3-4mm thick on a chassis.

tig welding uses  pure argon you can weld in most positions  its like gas welding  but with an arc instead of a flame you will need filler rods as well

I'm a coded welder and being self employed have used many TIG plants. I own a 5k all singing all dancing, do anything square wave weld set. Plus I own a £160.00 Tig inverter. Guess which one gets the most use?? Small modern machine are the way to go. Do you plan to weld alloy? if not you can get a nice little dc plant. If you intend to weld overhead you have to have fit arms to hold it steady for length of time. Tig is slow, plus it demands clean metal to do decent weld. Then you have the overheads cost wise. Gas, pure argon isn't cheap and it shocks many when the small bottle runs out so quickly when Tigging.

Hi. U will need plenty of practice to get used to it. If you can...try and buy a decent second hand set...and please dont buy one of those cheap crappy ones from lidle or aldi. A good brand new set will cost around £400.
