Post by: Olds on November 01, 2014, 05:00:23 PM
Basingstoke- Thorneycroft Society Transport Festival 2015 will be on Sunday the 10th of May.
For those who don't know this is FREE, for both exhibitors and public and usually has very good attendance.

Don't put folk off Andy.
Manky Monkey Motors always has the friendliest and most diverse group of people and vehicles at the show. Bikes, trikes, hot rods, yanks, dragsters etc. oh, and that Manky mobile. ;)

Unfortunately, as this is a one day event, I don't think there has ever been any official event campsite.
There is however a camping site a few miles out of town. Never been there so I cannot say what it is like, but here is a link to their website.

I was only thinking last night we need to get a move on with this. Are we up for doing it again?
The form needs to be in by the end of this month & they want more info this time-

Reg number
Make & model
Date built
Engine make & size
Owners name
Address
Insurance company
Policy number
Expiry date

I'll check with them & see if we really need all that.

Post by: Manky Monkey on March 18, 2015, 09:15:00 PM
Right, as usual, I'm completely disorganised.
The entry form for our pitch has to be in by the end of March. That gives us about 2 weeks to come up with a list of who's going.
I've spoken to one of the organisers today & all they need is your name, vehicle type, (Reliant trike for example), registration number & the name of your insurance company if you have it -as always we welcome unfinished projects cos the public are always interested to see the "behind the scenes" bit of building a vehicle, & obviously you won't have a registration number or insurance for those.
The show's held in the War Memorial Park in Basingstoke, Hants, about a mile from junction 6 of the M3, 30 miles West of London.
Around 900 vehicles on show, from motorcycles to buses to traction engines to cars of all types -& us.
If you've been before you'll know we're never organised. We turn up, park the vehicles in a vague semblance of order, struggle with a gazebo, then sit about, eating cake & generally making the place look untidy.
If you'd like to join us, you'd be very welcome. If you've got something half built that vaguely resembles a custom or classic vehicle, bung it in a van or on a trailer & bring it along. It's a good excuse to put faces to forum names & check out everyone's projects in the flesh. No entry fee & the possibility of free cake -who could resist.
You'll need to be at the park for around 8.30 ish so we can sort out the parking, (the show officially starts at 11, but as there's no gates & it's free entry, people begin arriving earlier), & we'd like you to stay till the end, which is 4.30 - 5pm, so we don't get gaps in our display if people leave early.
If you can genuinely make it on Sunday the 10th of May, add your name to the list please.

Right chaps, we've got less than a week to get this sorted. Are we having a pitch this year or has it run it's course now? It's getting harder & harder to find dates when everyone's free to do these things & 6 of us isn't really enough to make it worthwhile. Have we reached the end of the line with this one or is there a large contingent out there who just haven't gotten around to putting their names down yet? I'm happy either way, but need to know so I can let the organisers know.

Tough choice ain't it. I need to give the organisers a figure & a list of names etc. It's a big space to fill with just 6 of us. Maybe after nearly 10 years we've just run out of steam for it? I'm not sure.

Maybe if you miss a year (this year or next year if this year doesn't go well) there might be a bit more cash and a bit more optimism about?  Or a few more forum members who don't have one foot in the grave?

It's up to you guys really. 6 vehicles would look awfully lost on that pitch but I guess we put more effort into presenting them. There are small clubs there & we don't have to go all the way back to the edge of the field.
If we're doing this I need names, vehicle types, registration numbers & insurance company names as soon as possible please.

Yeah, I spoke to one of the organisers Terry & we can just give a list of names, vehicle types, registration numbers & insurance company names. The show's jointly run by the Thornycroft preservation group & the local council. Being seen to collect a little paperwork together keeps the council bods happy.

Not sure why there's this paranoia about giving them insurance details? Darren's had the same reluctance from people displaying on his stand. It's all out there on the motor insurance database anyway. Some large shows insist clubs have their own public liability insurance now.

Title: Re: BASINGSTOKE 10th May 2015
Post by: BikerGran on March 29, 2015, 05:38:14 PM
I think it's because of the cost of insurance for an event.  At an event near me, the entry form has a bit where you have to sign to say that you have public liability insurance for your exhibit (ie vehicle or engine) up to some incredible amount.  Don't know what happens if there's an accident and it turns out you haven't - one year an automatic car that had been left running, dropped inot gear and ran into an old lady breaking both her legs!

Yeah,as Loon says, Big Darren's organising his own pitch this year for the B/stoke Riders Group, (he usually brings along some crazy arsed quad or mini-trike). His fellow bikers are very wary of giving their details even though it's only to keep the pen pushers happy & the info's publicly available anyway.
Bike club pitches are dealt with by a different organiser than car club ones though. Our guys are a lot more easy going, know us & know we're fairly harmless -apart from the year we fired up 2 dragsters & caused pandemonium -"very entertaining. Please don't do that again".
Chatted to Mr Loon & we can probably pull in a couple of local guys to help fill the gaps so it may be more of an interesting stuff stand rather than purely MMMotors. With more space to play with, maybe we can finally come up with a more imaginative display?

Sorry about that. It filled the stand up though. I can't make it this year but I have nearly finished my blown Triumph sprint/drag bike project.

I'd forgotten yours Andy! Yeah, that certainly made an impression didn't it! I was actually referring to Brock & Dave 2 Lanes in their drag cars -maybe we're not quite the perfect show entrants I like to think we are!
Mr S- are you stinkier in the mornings then?
Alright chaps, I'm supposed to have the entry form in by the 1st of April -Wednesday? So all those who are serious about coming along, PM me your name, vehicle type, reg number & insurance company name as soon as you can please & add yourself to the list so we have some idea of who & what's coming.
The organisers know we always bring a bunch of unfinished projects & we always get allocated the same sized pitch, but I need to give them some sort of list.

Be a shame if your pop doesn't make it. Reading the write up about the build was the only thing that kept me sane during a recent hospital visit where I was confined to a single room for days on end.
Was looking forward to seeing it in the flesh so to speak. :)

It really is just a matter of parking up & having a natter to fellow forumers for the afternoon - nothing more organised than that for our pitch, but everyone's welcome.
Looks like we'll be mainly bike & trike orientated rhis year. My own Ford Pop ain't gonna be roadworthy in time, but my part built bike will be there.

Right chaps, a week to go till this show & I have to say we're seriously down on numbers this year. We've got a large patch of grass & very few vehicles to fill it with.
So can we have a definitive list please of just who's coming & what they're bringing. We also need some ideas for display/decor/ways of making the pitch look busier - on a budget of about 2 pounds 50.
I'll pick up more passes from the organisers to make sure we've got enough so anyone who fancies coming along with something vaguely customised, complete or unfinished project, you'd be more than welcome.

Manky-                                    unfinished Yamaha XS650 bobber.
Loony/Tom-                           unfinished Yamaha XS650 bobber.
Olds-                                        Reliant trike.
PieMan-                                  VW trike.
Twisted-                                  Reliant trike.
PD-                                           unfinished Triumph 3TA bobber,
(if we can persuade him to let us borrow it).
Loony Senior-                        1928 model A Ford sedan.
Loony Senior's mate-            tuned Vauxhall VX220.
Chris Forgotten's Dad-          Suzuki sidecar racing outfit.

Who else? Markju? Clive? Archie? Baychimp?
Muffin promised his Reliant trike but I haven't seen him for a few weeks so I'll chase him for it.
C'mon guys. We need you from around 8.30am till 5pm on Sunday the 10th of May.

Manky-                                  unfinished Yamaha XS650 bobber.
Loony/Tom-                           unfinished Yamaha XS650 bobber.
Olds-                                     Olds trike.
PieMan-                                 VW trike.
Twisted-                                Twistedmonkeyspanners trike.

Loony Senior-                        1928 model A Ford sedan.
Loony Senior's mate-              tuned Vauxhall VX220.
Markju-                                 Honda CX 500 trike.
Terry T-                                 Goldwing trike.
goose-                                   Honda CX 500 trike.
Muffin-                                   Reliant trike.
Jacko & his mates-                  3 VW trikes.

Possibly another model A Ford.
As always, a few have dropped out & a few have joined. So the current tally is:

2, possibly 3 bikes,
10 trikes,
2, possibly 3 cars.

One day we'll get organised with a huge marque, potted palms, scatter cushions & caterers, but as always, not this year.
We need a gazebo, seating & a table, posts to fix the banners to, (4 metal or wooden poles about 4 feet long that we can cable tie the banners onto). Can anyone help?
I'm gonna have to rent a van for the weekend, (Loon & I have got 2 half built bikes to move), so can pick stuff up in the Basingstoke area early on the Sunday morning. Any ideas/suggestions anyone?

Every year I knock up something to hold the 2 banners, then it ends up being cut up & used for something else.
Every year it gets to 2 days before the show before I realise we haven't got anything for this year.
Maybe we can employ several small children to hold them.

Gaffer & Jaffas -perfect!

Cable ties might be useful if you've got them Craig. Thanks.
Bunch of broom handles bought from local hardware store -banner mounting problem sorted.
Is there a collective noun for broom handles? A Trigger of broom handles maybe.
Van rented to cart 2 half built Yamahas there & back -one year we're actually gonna make it there with everything moving under it's own steam -but not this year.
Only other requirement is a gazebo of some sort. We've got the patented Loony Marque of Many Shapes, (I swear it ends up a different size & shape every time we put it up), but to be honest, it's a lot of hassle to sort out, although it does provide many hours of entertainment. Anyone got one of those pop-up jobbies? Yeah, I'll probably regret asking that.
I've arranged another dozen vehicle passes. Anything else we need?

Spoke to one of the organisers this afternoon & he says it's fine for vehicles but softer than last year after rain in the last couple of days. I was thinking of cutting a length of metal tube with a disc welded on one end & a handle, to act as a post banger-inner.

Sorry it's so late guys -spent the evening throwing my bike back together enough to get it loaded in the back of a van for tomorrow.

Right. Rod, would've been nice to see you mate, but entirely understandable. Get well soon.  :)

Mark, I'll bring your hoodie order along then. I'll also bring a big box of T shirts, patches, stickers & baseball caps, should anyone want anything.

Chris, ("Forgotten" here on the forum), & his Dad are bringing along their racing sidecar outfit after all, which means we have a small gazebo.
So if you could still bring your folding chairs along Mr Olds, that'd be rather handy.

As far as I know, this is the final line-up:

Manky-                                  unfinished Yamaha XS650 bobber.
Loony/Tom-                           unfinished Yamaha XS650 bobber.

Forgotten's Dad-                     Suzuki outfit.

Olds-                                     Olds trike.
PieMan-                                 VW trike.
Twisted-                                Twistedmonkeyspanners trike.
Markju-                                 Honda CX 500 trike.
Terry T-                                 Honda Goldwing trike.
goose-                                   Honda CX 500 trike.
Muffin-                                   Reliant trike.
Jacko & his mates-                  3 VW trikes, (Boom, Rewacco & Desperate Dan Preying Mantis -think Last of the Summer Wine on wheels).

Loony Senior-                        1928 model A Ford sedan.
Loony Senior's mate-              tuned Vauxhall VX220.
Loony Senior's other mate-     1920s model A Ford pick-up.

Not too bad a selection really.
Weather's been showery for the last few days, but forcast to be nice tomorrow. The yellow Transport Festival signs are out on the Basingstoke ring road, so should point you in the right direction. See earlier posts for the postcode. If you have to ask someone, you're looking for Crossborough Hill, right opposite the Police Station.
Oh yeah, phone numbers. You'll probably be waved in if you tell the marshals you're with the Manky Monkey mob. Our pitch is usually on the left as you come in.
My mobile number- 07472-397438. I'll PM you all that & Loony's number as well.
If you're asked for a vehicle pass, pull over & give me a shout & I'll nip up to the gate with one.
We'll be leaving Loony's place somewhere between 8 & 8.30, so if you're there somewhere between 8.30 & 9 that should be fine. All vehicles need to be in place by 10ish.
And whoever gets there first gets put in charge of the parking  :)
Have a safe journey everyone & we'll see you in the morning.

Finally home & settled with a very large & well deserved pizza after the annual logistical mayhem of moving unfinished projects & rented vans. I'm absolutely shattered, so will post the photos tomorrow, but just wanted to say well done chaps. A fantastic turnout & a brilliant day. Warm sunshine, (I'm definitely feeling sunburnt now), & possibly the largest crowds ever.
As always, we were busy all day & every vehicle got a thorough looking over by the punters -people do seem to like the special brand of weird stuff we bring along.
Thank you to each & every one of you & all the bods that came to say Hello. I'm very proud to call you a bunch of proper Monkeys.  ;D

Excellent day. Bit sunburnt but that's life. Always nice to put faces to names.
Looked at the photos I'd taken and half of them, and I blame the camera here, we're taken on the wrong setting so are rubbish. Obviously not my fault. :)

All that aside, great time with some great people.

Hi Folks
Hope you all arrived home safely. Rick and I had a great day (well Rick did once his fan belt was located - well done Muffin).

It was great to see all the interest that Joe Public was taking in the Manky pitch and even gone 4pm, the crowds were still quite large.

Getting off the site was quite slow but all the cars from the public car park were flowing in our direction which prevented the vehicles on site getting out at the first road junction. It improved slightly once another bod went down to help direct the traffic but I bet it was still slow going getting out of the main field.

As Terry said, thanks to Andy for organising it and sorting out all the paperwork, and thanks to all those who brought vehicles. The pitch looked impressive and it was down to you making the effort to get your vehicles/gazebo/chairs there.

It was lovely to see everyone and I look forward to seeing even more faces next year.

Cheers, JJ   8)

Thanks Andy.
Despite having less cars this year, the trikes, bikes and model A's certainly pulled in a lot of interested folk during the day.
Those I spoke to seemed genuinely interested in our vehicles.
Possibly the biggest attendance ever and it was great to see all the Monkeys who managed to get there.

Great people Rick!

Dave & Marcus trundle home in the model A, following a first World War Thornycroft lorry & a road roller -a very slow traffic queue, (about 5mph!).

Almost right past the site of the Thornycroft factory, where this lorry was built 100 years ago.

The show's jointly run by the Basingstoke Council & the Thornycroft preservation group.

Time Tunnel?

Right, that's enough for now. I'll post the main show pics later.
Oh yeah, we eventually decided to award this year's MMMotors trophy, (very kindly produced by Mr Olds), to Chris's Dad, builder, owner & former racer of the Suzuki sidecar outfit. For no real reason, other than he's been persuaded to come along by his son Chris for the last couple of years & really enjoys it. We like to encourage enthusiasm. :)

Excellent photos. Every time I take a lot of photos I think about getting a better camera, but I can't be trusted to use the one I've got, and that should be easy to use.

Mine was donated to me by Merv when my Nikon wore out. A little slow for moving vehicle shots, but fortunately we lot don't move very fast.  :P

13 trikes, (one VW appeared while I was in the other show field. No idea who it belonged to).
3 cars.
3 bikes, (a Goldwing also appeared at some point while I wasn't looking).

Not at all bad. I'm still determined to have a really professional, organised looking pitch with some sort of theme to it one year. Probably not next year. Or the one after that :P
Just once it'd be nice to get everything there under it's own steam instead of having to rent vans, borrow trailers etc. One day.

Show pics in no particular order.

I've no idea who they are.

I love bristols. F'nurk.

Aluminium bodied Bristol really divided opinion between the "Restore it immediately" & "Don't ever restore it" camps.
I think it's beautiful exactly as it is. Fortunately, so does the owner.

As was this Volvo Amazon.

Late entrants arriving. The show's pre-entry only & I didn't see these on the show fields, so maybe they'd just turned up en spec & were directed to the public carpark.

John Mould's a local millionaire car fan with a huge collection of model A Fords & British classics. He made his money from demolishing the runways at Greenham Common airbase & selling the rubble to the Highways Agency to build the M4.
