Post by: the coppersmith on August 22, 2014, 03:10:56 PM
This is now a major event, with everything there including cars, bikes, live bands, displays and even the odd steam engine, unfortunately I will have to miss it this year  :'( work commitments in Portugal need my attention so here is a link t a really good couple of days out.  http://www.gdsf.co.uk/

Do as I do BG and use a scooter. You can hire them there but book ahead. Price about £20 for the day. Seems steep but I recently thought of taking all my grandchildren to Thorpe Park and if I did that there would be no room in the car for my scooter. A company nearby hires them out but their charge is £84 a day! We didn't go.

We have got our tickets for the GDSF and usually go the first day but the weather forecast looks rough. Looks like wellies and brollies again.

Really got to get a scooter so I can get to more events JJ - went to Gillingham agricultural show with our grandson on Wednesday, and saw someone unloading one in the car park - she got it off Ebay for £70!  So I'm on the lookout now!

Just been informed that they are already struggling getting the stuff through the wet grass etc. I presume they mean MUD.

It's always hed problems with mud - they even chaged the date some years ago, AND the location - still rains though.

I went and I saw very little. We left there about noon. The earliest ever. I was on my scooter and every which way I went I met mud too mashed up to get through. I know I was sitting down but I was soon exhausted.  I see today they are telling disabled people and people bringing pushchairs to stay away until conditions improve. Not sure they will.

We arrived at 7ish and there was already confusion. Vehicles were already getting stuck, causing queues on the main road. The disabled parking field was already impassable. We had to go in the gate and straight back out again to gate 9. This field was not set up for the disabled - no loos and parking only near the gate if you had good timing - there were young girls in charge of parking but none of them were willing to make an executive decision. At least the field was dryish because of the high stubble. Only thing is, this surface is hard going on a scooter.

It really was a waste of time, money and effort going this year.  Rick took a few photos and I will probably see more from those ( :-\) but neither of us saw the trucks or the steam engines which we do enjoy perusing.

Like BG said, GDSF have been at the site long enough to know the problems plus they knew it was going to rain in the days before and on the day so bringing in straw to put on the paths and roads should have been quite easy in a rural area but I am pretty sure profit comes first.

Lunatic & Chris, ("Forgotten"), were also heading down there today. No doubt I'll get a full report from them tomorrow.

As been previously said this event resembled a paddy field, hence my legs did not let me get very far due to the very hard going, so here's just a few photos of the show before the rain set in and i called it a day.
